Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

I can't be sure but... were you using Facebook Contact sync via the App and not via Sense? if so Gingerbread removed the ability for Facebook app to sync contacts with Android contacts, something to do with Facebook not allowing contacts to be saved to a csv or something like that. Thsi could have screwed up your contacts when they turned this off. Sense syncing still works though.

Thanks for the tip. To refresh my contacts I thought I might remove my login to Facebook for Sense and log out of the Facebook app. When I logged back in to only Facebook for Sense (only), none of my FB contacts now show up under "People" with their photos. And if I try to "Link" to a contact in FB there are none to choose from.

Other than Netflix, the main issue I've had since the update is that I've lost the ability to rotate the screen in the Kindle app - it's stuck on landscape view. I've looked around and not seen this issue posted anywhere...is anyone experiencing the same problem?

Edit: Thanks Crodley - I was confused because there are no screen rotation settings in the "Settings" menu...totally missed that the little lock in the bottom corner controls that.

So far everything works great. I LOVEEEE the new copy, paste & select options & the restart option when you hold the power button. It also starts SUPER FAST. My only gripe is that it's not working with Oovoo. Ppl can see me just fine but when they turn on their cam, the app closes but still shows up on the top bar that I'm in a call. No matter who I try to video chat with, pc or fellow evo, as SOON as their video pops up on the screen the app goes to trash. *sigh* I love this app too, its the only way for my mom [whos computer illiterate] to video chat with me & I can't even do that now. =(

I downloaded the update last night. Now my Motospeak app does a forceclose every time I try to open or use it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app and no change. Outside of that everything else seems to work.

Meanwhile - this is likely to cure most or all of the problems you're seeing -

Mon, I'm assuming this procedure still works well for Gingerbread? My phone was starting to run a little slow/buggy but it seems to have improved since the Gingerbread update. Before the update I was seriously considering a reset and reinstall. Do you think that's helpful for general phone use?

Also, do you think the need for an App Killer is gone since the update? It seems like you were against it for Froyo.

I never needed the app killer with Froyo and definitely don't think it's necessary after Gingerbread. It's seriously amazing to see the drastic difference in battery drain on a non-rooted phone.

Part of the reason I was strongly considering rooting was to help battery life, but now it's not as much of a factor. Only factor for me to root now would be if I wanted to remove the Sprint Bloatware apps that I don't use.

And for free Hot Spot.

Updated, did a hard reset and everything's working great!!

I'm curious, are there any known benefits of doing a hard reset after updating? I didn't do it because I didn't want to lose game progress etc.

I was thinking about doing it because I thought that this update might have included some of the updates (like telenav, current version of flash, current version of Qik) in the update itself, so those would go to the ROM and it wouldn't take up my available storage with those updates (some of these updates like Telenav, flash are almost 10MB each).

Is this the case? Or does it still take up the same storage? Does anyone know?
Any other potential benefits?
(my EVO is working just fine after the GB update - except the few known issues like netflix, notification LED etc)

Thanks!

While this does fix the Google Voice Search when you press and hold the magnify lens touch key on the bottom right of the EVO, it does not fix speech to text when you press the microphone icon in text messaging, websearch, gmail etc... weird....

Voice Search is very inconsistent after the update. Before, it was working almost flawlessly. I used it all the time for text, navigation, etc. Now it barely works. If there is any background noise (car, airport, mall) it does not appear to hear anything. If it is quiet, it hears what you say, but the accuracy is not good at all. I have the personalized recognition checked. #@%^&$!!!

There is an update for handcent that resolves the led notification. Mysteriously, it also corrected the same thing for YouMail. You have to dig for the update though. It does not appear normally as an update.

Weird. My Evo's battery life has gotten a lot worse after the update. Usually by the end of the day. I am at about 60%. I now get about 35%

I've kinda noticed the same thing. Just browsing the web or doin simple stuff it drains like 3-5% in a blink of an eye. also literally after removing it from a full charge it went down 5% jut opening something like Facebook.

2 things I've noticed on mine & may be applicable to you:

1) Did you leave enabled data on all the time before?
*** Post update, it turned mine back on. So check there

2) Are you using any battery manager like Green Power?
*** I know my GP broke since the GB update because it activates 3G data even when screen is locked - not the way it's suppose to be.
Locked mean 3G off - unlock means 3G on.

Thanks for the tip, this prompted me to check 'accounts & sync' and noticed bunch of stuff automatically set for sync I never set before (Facebook, GroupMe, & Qik Video), those are off now so we'll see what happens.

Just got the notification tonight for the big update around 8pm....so happy. Well its almost 11pm and the download bar is stuck at 56% complete and its been like that since 930pm. WTF!!

Are you downloading over wifi or 3G? If 3G, how strong is the 3G signal where you're at?

Battery use while idle is great, but screen on while awake seems so be draining lots more juice than it used to. My display brightness is at about 25% while I used to run at 50%, and I'm still draining the battery.

I have noticed that the display seems to be what drains my battery the most. But I guess this would be normal for me since I am on my phone alot. At the same time I can't complain about the battery life, because my battery life has indeed doubled. I don't have alot stuff running in the background either. Once I kill it, it does not keep coming back up. So for me Gingerbread was a great improvement. I had to tell all my friends with EVOs to make sure they update. So far they love it.

Sorry, but my Kindle rotates fine, maybe your option to rotate in Kindle settings is checked to manually rotate?

EVO Internal Issues:
-- Digital Compass not working [NeoteriX, richard.tufty, BeTrue]
-- Voicemail Notification [many]
-- Google Voice Search not picking up Mic audio
-- HTC Sense Home more frequently restarts (white HTC screen) [NeoteriX, BeTrue]
- - Program Icons insides Folder revert back to generic Android Icons depending on what screen saver you have or the state of the Fast Boot Selection

External App Issues:
-- Handcent (notification light disabled) fixed??
-- WiMax Notifier
-- Netflix
-- Telenav [jj14xl, Joehornback]
-- ShootMe (non-root exploit closed)
- Drudge Report app: text in opened articles is now skipping around, formatting problem

One issue I randomly have is when coming out of Dolphin Browser if my phone is not standing up straight and on its side with the home keys to the right it will load the apps, phone and add to home bar side ways.

I hope that makes sense. It will interfere with all my apps on the right side of the screen too.

I do have to say that the battery life is incredible with the 2.3 upgrade. My wife's phone lasted almost 3 days on a 3500mah battery with moderate to heavy usage.

To me it seems like it lasts a whole lot longer when idle but seems to use battery quicker when it is under heavy use.

I'm stuck in portrait view and the other tap/screen features no longer work.

Advanced SD Card Manager force closes. Am up in the air about battery improvement. Am surprised with all the little quirks with the update. Maybe that is why it took as long as it did. Kinda wish I could go back. Evo still rocks, most apps I use regularly work fine, It's okay everyone, I'll be fine.

"Advanced SD Card Manager force closes."

Seems to be working fine for me. What are you doing when it crashes?
