Lets all be polite please. There is a pretty good debate in this thread http://androidforums.com/htc-incredible/229588-am-i-only-one-who-scared-rooting.html
about who should root and why. Lets try not to stray into rooting/rom discussion and keep the thread on topic please
I have a question along the same lines..,
When\If Verizon releases the 2.3 update: How will it affect my rooted phone? I only rooted to delete (disable) annoying apps, I'm not using any ROMs.
Will Verizon brick my phone?

If it's like the last two updates, your phone will download the update and prompt you to run the update. Attempting to run the update will cause your phone to reboot without applying the update. You will be nagged to update your phone every 30 minutes.

In order to avoid this, you have a few options. You can either unroot your phone, and hope that someone can re-root the new update. Or, you can switch to a custom ROM based on the new update (see my sig, the final version should be out within 24 hours of the actual update hitting). Lastly, you can just use ADB to change the build prop's number so that it matches the new update, but that just leaves you on the now current version without a nagging prompt.

I hate double posting, but this is completely unrelated to my last post. It's just been announced that Sprint will be pushing the update to the original Evo4G on June 6th. Last time we were 3 weeks behind the Evo. However, at the time both phones held similar marketing positions on their respective carriers. Sprint still sells and heavily markets the Evo, whereas Verizon has discontinued the Incredible. I don't see the Incredible being a priority device for them right now. I do expect us to get the update, I just don't expect it to happen until the July/August time frame based on how incomplete that leaked test build is.

Hey, moved some of mine, too. Temptation is always there when it's about tasty Gingebread! ;)

So - do we even have some tasty rumors or anything on the release date for the Incredible's 2.3?

If you look up this thread, there was a leaked preliminary update of Gingerbread specifically for our phone. Given that, it is incredibly (pun intended) likely that we will get a Gingerbread update (much more likely, IMHO, than the comments of various reps that mentioned Q2). However, given that we have only heard from reps (notoriously unreliable) and received a leaked update (with no mention of timing, obviously, with it, and it was obviously an early build, not a late close to release candidate), the time frame is in total murkiness (is totally murky? Is covered with great murkosity? Is not clear).

Cheers

Two Quick Questions:
1. If you root, you can install a custom rom that includes (imitates?) 2.3 aka Gingerbread?
2. What are the main perks/improvements that GB has to offer

Hello,

My name is Evan from Verizon NRB (Network Repair bureau). I have confirmed push dated of June 17th for the 2.3 upgrade on the Droid Incredible. I have used the official release here and can confirm an upgraded Sense UI and the unit runs much smoother than 2.2. There isnt as many lags in the menus and there is this distinct polished feel to it compared to 2.2. Its by far the best build for the Incredible. I'll try to get my hands on the unit again hopefully Monday. I own the Incredible myself.

welcome to the forums, hope that date doesn't get pushed back.

Good to hear, if this is indeed legit!

Evan, I hope that you're right, but I'm skeptical on the updated Sense UI. Both the leaked update for the Incredible as well as the official update for the Evo (a family member as far as phones go) are using the current Sense UI with Gingerbread rather than the updated Sense UI.

In the leak I've played with, it was the current Sense UI overlaid on GB, so any changes noticed were things that were incorporated into GB, not new Sense.

Thats what makes me suspicious of the post being legit.

Im just reporting what I saw with the unit we have in the office. I can move screens around in heli view. Cant do that with current Sense UI on the Inc.

Evan

I want to believe you (I really, really do) the rest of the forum wants to believe you. as i'm sure you're aware an internet forum can be a harsh place for people who claim to have info on certain things. the burden of proof is on you pal.

Evan,

Don't take it personal. This place STILL remembers the Froyo fiasco. For the uninitiated, it was a period of about 6 weeks where every day we had another "insider," including a few claimed from Verizon, who told us the push date. We're just not as trusting.

If you're right, you'll be vindicated on the 17th.

If he's right then not only will he be 'vindicated' (not that he actually needs to be:p) but I will owe him a beer!!

I'm surprised VZW and HTC would invest that much time in updating both Sense and OS on a discontinued phone. But there are a lot of Dinc owners out there so the PR and owner loyalty would certainly be a big upside. We'll see.

The improvements are more incremental than revolutionary so it probably wouldn't make THAT much difference if Sense isn't upgraded. And don't forget all the new bugs that crop up with any OTA update.

I think it's weird that 400-plus posts into this thread suddenly some VZW guy chimes in matter-of-factly about the update with news that runs completely counter to everyone's expectation. Color me skeptical.

given that the incredible is vzw's most popular phone, I don't think its that much of a stretch that we would get the gingerbread update.

I work for a vzw indirect agent, so we never know the push dates of that stuff until its right upon us, but if I hear anything concrete I'll be sure to post it as well. Given that I own an incredible, I am (im)patiently waiting for official news on this.
