Preparing to root (Sprint HTC Hero) for the first time

I did mine yesterday after the same trepidation many people have towards monkeying with a fine tech piece like the Hero. After reading so many posts about rooting not going to "brick" my phone I went for it. My issues were with how my phone was connecting with my PC. I also had to try rooting a couple of times and as the instructions for pre-kitchen's autoroot states, rooting again doesn't harm the handset so there is no risk in re-rooting. I also had a problem getting the Fresh 1.1 ROM on to my SD card and while there is probably a simpler way, I used pre-kitchen to force the zip file to my SD card. Once I got the Fresh 1.1 ROM on to the SD card it was easy and really a one button push operation.

I read the instructions on the Fresh ROM site and as many posts here as possible. There is a video on the homepage here but it's not that enlightening.
 
Okay, so, at this moment I am now officially running Fresh 1.1. I can already sense the speed. This is beautiful. I'm sure this was worth the massive headache I got figuring it out. Thanks for the encouragement and help guys.

I'm skipping kitchen for now, at least until I get comfortable with Fresh, or until they release a non-beta version.
 
Cool! Out of curiosity, where are you noticing the speed gains? I am a day into Fresh 1.1 and learning to appreciate it.
 
Am I doing something wrong or what? Everytime I try to download the flashrec 113.apk it comes in as a rar, but no apk file in it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.
 
Well I got the file to download but when i tried to install it i get a "Recovery Flasher could not be installed on this phone." error. What can I do?
 
ok so after reading all these great posts on rooting i decided to do it. i have on question though. i am running fresh 1.1. what can i now delete off the sd card after going through all this? and can i delete the freshrec i installed through the file manager?

I just rooted my phone last night & installed Fresh 1.1 & wow - this is awesome. I have to say anyone who is debating this, just take the plunge & do it. It is so worth it.

I have the sprint HTC Hero with the latest update and when I'm to create a back up it doesn't let me do it. I then tried to downgrade the phone installing the the Sprint RUU and whn I tried to install the AndroidSDK drivers I can't get to see the Serial Number of my device when I search in the comand bar (following the steps of the Unlockr). I'm using Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Any help will be appreciated

I rooted and flashed Fresh 1.1 this morning. The auto rooter wouldn't work for me. I used the command line method. It could be my computer but I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Anyway, I love the changes. I read that you have to format the sd to use apps2sd. Before I started with the root I made a complete copy of my sd card in a file on my computer. After I formated my sd to use apps2sd I simply copied that folder back to my sd card. It worked great. All of my web bookmarks, photos, music, movies, astro backup, it all was restored with out any effort. So far I love the new look and everything seems to be faster. Not as much lag between apps. Chomp loads in less than 1/2 the time.
 
i=ok i followed this and used the prekitchen to auto root my phone ..however i can not get to the boot screen by holding the power button and the home button ..all i get is a white screen that ask if i want to clear my sd card ..i was told that if you do not get the black screen with the green menu that the phoen was NOT rooted ...i ave done the auto root 3 diffrent times and it seems to go through with no errors ...
i also tried to remove soem apps and it says read only and never removes them .... what the hell am i doing wrong here???

also my HTC sync doesnt seem to work ( never detects the phone ) i am on windows 7 and all the drivers of the phone seem to have installed properly ....

any help would be great ..
 
That happened to me the first time too. Try auto-rooting again. When the auto-root finishes the phone should boot into recovery by itself. Try restarting your computer then running auto-root. Did you run the diag. in pre-kitchen first? I'm not sure the it works with Windows 7 without some sort of a workaround.

yeah each time i do it, i do get to the recovery screen .. i have done it with " i have a google phone" checked and then after reboot i go back and do it withoutit checked.. im not sure were the diag is , could you help on that?
 
When you're using pre-kitchen go into the help section and there is a diag. check in there to make sure everything is fine before trying to root.

So, you're saying you get to the point where you create your nandroid back-up, but after rebooting you can't get to that point again? When you reboot to recovery do you hold the home button then turn the phone on?

okay so i guess i was doing it wrong , i was holding both the home and the power button at the sametime ..i did it as u suggested above holding home and hitting power button ( not holding it down ) and i was able to get to the recovery screen ..so i guess that its rooted correctly now ...

However i still can not get the kitchen to remove applications i dont want ( all sprint crap stuff) .. i also ran the Diag and all is checked okay except for the Java ?? the java gives a error message abotu not being avalible on the kitchen???

any thoughts?
 
I think you need to install a custom fresh 1.1 before you can use all the features of the kitchen. Make sure you make a nandroid back-up before you install the rom. Just In case.

I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks trying to borrow all of your courage and do this. I finally took a deep breath today at lunch and did it but my recovery image is 1.2.3, not the 1.5.2 that everybody says they have. I just downloaded pre-kitchen (and new .exe) yesterday so it cant be old stuff.

When I check the "with Googe" box a popup tells me theres some kind of problem with going straight to 1.5.2 so it says to do it a second time. I've done it 3 times now and I still have recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img

The phone works great, I just don't have the version numbers that everyone else has. Should I be concerned?

You have to uncheck the "with Google" box to get v1.5.2.
