I'm new to smart phones, but should I be able to get online while I'm on the phone? My girlfriend is able to do it with her iphone 4. Why can't I?

Getting online during a phone call

Her iphone must be on at&t because verizon phones can not get on internet and talk at the same time. Even though this is true now in the future our phones maybe able to with an update on the CDMA network. so we will have to wait and see if our phone can later. but as of right now the only way you can do it is with wifi and calling.

Not possible on Verizon. Unless she's using an unreleased iPhone 4 with 4G LTE, then maybe. TBH, sounds like you are just trolling...
CDMA is not capable of this.
Wifi... is the only thing I can think of

Yes. This should work on any Verizon smartphone with Wifi capability.
??? Why??? you can talk on the phone using the 3G and surf over the WiFi. It isn't a one or the other thing.
And this would be a good question for those Verizon 4G LTE users out there. Can you talk and surf at the same time? Being that the only reason we can't do it on VZW now is that they do Voice over the 3G network.
AT&T does voice over the EDGE network. iPhones have the ability only when they are in 3G coverage areas. If you are stuck on EDGE only then they are in the same boat.
