Root rooting with linux

can anyone tell me if its possible to downgrade my unbranded dhd (2.36.405.8) and also root it using linux, not windows? if its a lot easier and faster with windows i will install it on my laptop otherwise it would save me time using linux.

any info would be great as this is my first root and i could really do with not bricking my handset!

cheers

Just a thought, but can't you dual boot linux? I was sure that a mate of mine was running 1 screen on his laptop as windows?!?

yeah you can but i have it set up so that windows starts as a virtual machine inside linux once linux has bopted up. it runs like normal windows but the usb function on my install doesnt perform at the moment so windows wont detect my phone but linux does

Ah-ha - that explains it... thought you could run windows through linux... understand your problem then. Perhaps someone on here can offer a bit better advice then! :)

no worries dude, thanks for suggesting. just been looking through loads of posts about rooting that your included in as well.... did you find the rooting process easy? im trying it tonight and i'm not gonna lie...i am sh&ting myself! lol

I was also extremely nervous about the whole process a couple of days ago, but as it turns out, it was relatively quick and painless. It took me around 1.5 hours, but most of the time I spent was reading instructions 10x over, from 2-3 sources so as to not make any mistakes. You could probably cut down the whole downgrading/s-off/new room to around 30min if you've already done it or are confident in your first attempt. Check out El Presidente's summary of what to do if you haven't already, makes it much easier.

The only part I had difficulties with was creating a goldcard. Once I had that sorted, it was easy as!

Follow El P's info (in this post http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/354749-how-root-install-custom-rom-desire-hd.html) - it is the most comprehensive all in one place list of links on how to.

If you have any issues, feel free to ask... won't lie... the first time, I nearly shat a brick! But it all went off without a hitch (once I'd got the goldcard sorted). ;)

Only rooted for the first time a couple of months ago, but once you've done it, you'll wonder why you hadn't done it straight away!!! :D

I was EXACTLY the same... read, read and read again!! Better to be safe than sorry!!! ;)

That ^^ is for sure!!

Good lad El P - sorted links in one place... ALL you'll need.

thanks both. gonna have a crack tonight. if my ocd kicks in then the half an hour process will be more like 4 hours. i gotta also ask.... do you both think there are any drawbacks to having a rooted handset. I'm seeing ten times more pros than cons so far!

VOIDS warrantee... doesn't bother me though... you can always put it back to how it was for warrantee purposes if needed.

It gives you FULL access to Android as it should be!! The ability to flash custom ROM's means that I will not be fed up of my handset straight away... means that the 2 year contract is a little more bearable!! :D

What D-U-R-X said.

If you get bored with your current setup, it gives you A LOT more options as opposed to the likes of alternative launchers etc. Once you've gone through the downgrade/Root, S-OFF/Eng S-Off process, installing new ROMS is easy.

I'm the same, I was bricking it when I went through the process, so I can totally understand where you're coming from. Luckily D-U-R-x & Xyro were on hand to provide support as I was going through the process. It also helped that Pothers and Maxy Dad were doing it at the same time.

If you're going to get stuck in tonight, I'll be kicking about if you have any questions etc whilst you're doing it. I'm still relatively new to the entire process, but if anything, I can provide moral support at least!

Was about to start the procedure and double checked what i needed... htc sync or adb drivers and .net framework 4...
looks like this is a windows only procedure or can i do everything with adb drivers in linux, if so where do i get them from? if windows only, then i will wait until tomorrow when i have a windows machine.

thanks everyone for your input and help! i'm not quitting yet!!!

Doing this on Windows 7 - is it best to download htc sync or android sdk? also if i download sync do i need .net 4? thanks..

I think either sync or SDK are good - no best option.

As for .net 4 - I downloaded it, as it said you needed it...

thanks mate. so if i install sync, sdk and .net 4. turn on usb debugging. then im good to go yeah?

Yeah - that sounds right... you going for it now then?

yeah man i think i have read the instructions 5 times already and I havent even started yet! i'll let you know if i run into any problems - if you dont mind that is?

started everything about 20 mins ago and almost had a heart attack at one point lol. got to the command "./data/local/tmp/GingerBreak" hit enter and at this point my phone screen went black! after a very stressfull 90 seconds a # prompt finally came up. I went to reboot and wasnt able to so after abit of fiddling i managed to reboot and have now got a downgraded dhd. So all good there. Now im going to give visionary a go and will keep you posted. All i was thinking during this was how much is my mobile insurance excess lol.
