Flashing Sprint VVM in CM7 ??

gtsg01

Newbie
I really don't like Google Voice for my voicemail. I was perfectly happy with my Sprint VVM, so I want to install Sprint VVM on my Hero with CM7. I have downloaded the .zip from XDA and am not sure I understand the procedure to flash it.

When I boot into recovery, I get the following;

- REBOOT SYSTEM NOW
- APPLY SDCARD: UPDATE .ZIP
- WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET
- WIPE CACHE PARTITION
- INSTALL .ZIP FROM SDCARD
- BACKUP AND RESTORE
- MOUNTS AND ATORAGE
- ADVANCED

Do I select INSTALL .ZIP FROM SDCARD, or do I use ROM Mgr, or can I install it from File Mgr?

The instructions on XDA says to flash the Sprint VVM.ZIP. Do I have to reflash my CM7 and GAPPS at the same time, or can I just flash the VVM into my phone?

It seems like the instructions are written for people that don't need instructions!

Am I just over analyzing this whole process?

just install zip from sd card... make sure you wipe cache and dalvik cache before you install.... and if you dont know where dalvik is its in advanced....

OK, maybe I am over thinking this process.

I am confused about the wiping of the cache and davlik. I really don't have a grasp of what these files are.

I have found that I can use ROM Mgr to flash the Sprint VVM.zip, and it will do a nandroid backup, clear the cache and the davlik for me in one step.

My fear is that this will remove CM7 and replace it with VVM and NO operating system.

I'm scared!

Sign up for Youmail, you will like it and you can customize a V/mail for each contact and it is free.

You boot into recovery, which you can do by selecting the command from ROM Manager or by shutting off your handset and pressing and holding the volume down button and hitting power until the screen comes on, in which case you can select the recovery option. After that you have an option to wipe the cache on the screen, so select that one.

Finally, go into Advanced, and wipe Dalvik cache. I use Google Voice these days, so I do not know if flashing the Sprint Visual Voicemail works in CyanogenMod 7 though.

It does from what I had read, but I still think either GV or Youmail is the way to go IMO.

So wiping the cache and davlik and flashing Sprint VVM will not remove my CM7?

So, when flashing a ROM, there must be code that removes the old ROM and then installs the new one. Is my reasoning flawed?

And I still don't know what the davlik file contains.

You guys haven't led me astray, so far, but I like to at least try and understand what I'm doing.

Please, educate me!

No, wiping caches never hurts anything. If anything, it can fix some problems with apps that are acting up or odd behavior with Android.

Flashing the Sprint Visual Voicemail basically just copies the app to the /system partition I believe. It, in no way, shape, or form, will delete CyanogenMod 7.

gtsg01 It simply installs the app in recovery, never touches anything else on the phone, you can also flash Titanium backup in the same process, this way if you flash a new ROM at any given time you can also flash your Backup of titanium backup and have it installed and ready to go when you boot up your new phone on the new ROM, but keep in mind if you do create a backup of of your Titanium backup, make sure you sign the zip.

I assume this was aimed at the other fellow. Haha. ;)

I just use the regular Titanium Backup app. I did not buy Titanium Backup Pro. :)

Yes it was, but I wanted him to reference your post to let him know what he can also do. Edited post for better understanding

Well I did it now! My phone is a brick! :p ;) Just kidding.

I installed the Sprint VVM and it doesn't work so good on the CM7 as it does on the Sprint 2.1.

Fortunately, I did a nandroid backup of my configuration before I installed the VVM, and when it didn't work the way I expected, I simply, and I do mean simply flashed back to the nandroid backup and poof the Sprint VVM was gone. (I couldn't uninstall it from my phone)

I'm actually getting comfortable with this rooting stuff, thanks to the good people on this site.

I'm going to try Youmail, since Google and Sprint don't work the way I want. Maybe the third time is the charm!

Thanks for every ones help!!!

DonB, are you using thepaid app or the free one? Also, there seems to be some bugs in the new free version according to the market reviews. Any comments?

I am using the GV, but when I was using YMail I was using the free app, and it works great, I did not stop using it because of any reason in particular, simply wanted to try GV and then did not switch back, I may switch back to YMail because I liked the customization, and the option to block number with different phone message settings, you do not need to use the app, simply sign up, set up all your messages, and in the settings, you can have it email you the messages, and you can listen to them right from your browser, also turn text off if you do that otherwise you will get text and emails
