Why not stick with default Messaging?

I am a little confused on why people download Go SMS Pro, or other similar SMS applications. I personally downloaded Go SMS Pro, and I like it but I do not see much use for it because the default messaging app is good in itself. Can anyone please offer some insight to why Go SMS Pro and other similar SMS applications are beneficial for me to download?
 
Some people like to have different notification tones for different contacts, and to set a signature. With Go SMS (and some others) you can do that. I'm sure there's other reasons, but personally I see none.
 
I do it for the themes. The stock app has light colors and it's a bit blinding. With other apps I can switch to darker themes and change the colors anyway I want. It's a lot better on the eyes. I also like the different settings, such as being able to set a custom vibrating pattern.
 
I use Handcent. I like themes, different message tones for different people, customizing the look and colors and font sizes is nice.
 
Well there are popups. When you get a text, you get a pop-up box with the message and you can reply without having to close out of what you're doing. Or just close the pop-up and reply later.
 
If you like the stock messaging app then there's no reason to use another. I've been using Handcent since I got my phone, and didn't even look in the default app (except to change the settings to avoud duplicate notifications) until just now. My reaction? "Wow, that's...basic." I like text bubbles, being able to use my own colors, set different notifications for different people, etc. So yeah, customization.
 
i've played around with the other apps and while i like the way they look i can't personally justify the space they take on my optimus (maybe if i upgrade to the triumph after it comes out) so i stick with stock which i only have one real wish for.. the ability to change the font size
 
Well I currently use GO SMS Pro. And I don't think there is much difference besides colors and a couple customizable things. Thanks a lot for everyone's input.

Yeah, that feature is huge for me.
 
i hate popups... i'd rather drag down the notification bar, select the message, read it, then go back to what i was doing (without ever having to close out of it)

popups can be REALLY annoying... example

QFT! Popups, in any shape or form, are indeed annoying!
 
^Agreed, even though I use Handcent, no popups for me. On the off chance I leave my phone unattended, I don't want any fool who happens to walk by to be able to read my texts.

You can set it so the popups don't actually contain the text of the message -- just the name.

Ok, confession time- the thing I said upthread is only part of the reason. In truth, stuff popping up on my screen startles me. Even an incoming call startles me if I have my ringer off but my phone is in my line of sight. /dorkitude

i installed handcent but the stock messenger still pops up even though i turned the app off and cleared the data. how do i use only handcent?

Open the stock Messaging app, hit the Menu button, then Settings, and uncheck the box for Notifications.
