Help Yahoo Mail Stopped Working

i think you guys are not understanding. ANDROID default uses IMAP not POP3.

POP3 is what yahoo charges for. IMAP, from what I think is a program that logs into yahoo mail as if you are at a desktop computer.

yes yahoo charges $ for pop3 many years ago for the plus mail, but us users have been getting yahoo mail since we bought this phone a year ago. It only stopped working because of the update.

I have the Yahoo! Mail Plus service. But my Evo 4G can't get new email using the native HTC mail client. So the story about the need of a paid account is probably not true.

Then I downloaded the Yahoo mobile mail client from Yahoo. It works on the same Yahoo! Mail Plus account.

I am more inclined to think that it is a Yahoo mobile mail server issue.

Which could be true, but it is just weird that some are working and some aren't. And how the pop server that is included with the plus works sometimes.
And it couldn't just be the new update, because it isn't working on 2.2 phones.

You guys know about the HTC service update right? and also the gingerbread upgrade?

My email was working fine before the HTC service update. The next morning when I checked my phone no emails was odd, checked my desktop and i had emails but the phone didnt download them.

This rules out gingerbread because I didnt upgrade to gingerbread until later that day.

While Yahoo may be charging for their service, I am able to get incoming Yahoo emails on my iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Additionally, emails can still be sent out on the HTC Evo 4g, just not received.

I think the problem is related to the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update. Hopefully, a fix is in the works.

Just for balance my EVO 4G seems to be working fine. It is only a few months old but I updated to GB 2.3.3 plus the fix on the 21st.

I just sent a test email to my paid Yahoo account and one of my free ones that is set up on my phone. Both were received and read quickly. Of course I can't guarantee it will work every time.

From my thinking if my phone is working after the updates it may not be the updates that is causing the issues.

My phone has a mail application. How do I get my Yahoo! Mail messages in it? | Yahoo! Mobile Help

You will need adjust the mail application's POP settings to get your Yahoo! Mail messages into it.
POP access is a service for owners of one of the following:

  • Yahoo! Mail Pop Access & Forwarding
  • Yahoo! Mail Plus Premium Services
  • A Broadband account
  • A Small Business account
Please note: If your mobile device uses IMAP, we recommend that you contact your mobile service provider to find out the IMAP server information, Yahoo! is unable to provide you with this information.
To use an email client or application to send and receive Yahoo! Mail messages, you may need to designate a new incoming (POP) mail server and a new outgoing (SMTP) mail server. Consult your owner's manual for instructions on designating servers in the email application.
If you can't add new POP or SMTP servers, you will need to change your current server settings. Before you make any changes, write down your current settings. You might need to revert to your original settings later if you decide to send and receive messages from your other email addresses.
The above is dated Sep 2010.

I'm wondering if we've been working with a workaround for a while now. Doing some Google searches about this problem I find plenty of previous posts from over a year ago about the same issues. This could be something the Yahoo and Android are just going in circles with. Seems funny that Yahoo would provide an email server applee(sp) named "android.imap.mail.yahoo.com" and then say mobile android users cannot use it unless it's truly supposed to be for paid user accounts.

I can find posts about other HTC users(Not EVO 4G users) so it's not just happening to this phone specific. But as some have mentioned "why do other mobile devices work?"

Some users who are reporting issues need to also report(some have) whether they are seeing this on the phone mobile network and/or via a wi-fi connection. This might be a big difference in what others see.

Crap I need to check using my mobile connection rather than wi-fi. Oooops be right back! lol

Okay....right now it's working using mobile data too. So for my phone and 2 of my Yahoo accounts it's working both with wifi and mobile network. Default Android IMAP settings.

I agree. My emails stopped working after the update.

Count me as another user whose HTC default mail client stopped working with Yahoo mail over the last couple of days. It seems to sync but no new emails are downloaded to my EVO, even though there are new messages on the server. And I still have not upgraded to Gingerbread, still running 2.2 because of the Netflix problems, so it's not GB related. As a workaround I've downloaded the Yahoo mail app but agree with others that it's a poor replacement for the native mail client.

Just wanted to answer some of the questions people have brought up as they pertain to my situation.

I have not done any updates to my phone so I am still running 2.2 and HTC Mail 2.0. I'm not sure what the HTC maintenance update is or if it happens automatically but I haven't updated anything myself.

Everything I tried was with wi-fi off. I went back and tried with wi-fi on but the results were the same. I have gone ahead and downloaded the Yahoo Mail app for now. Just hoping they fix the problem so I can go back to the HTC app.

Right now I set up my yahoo account on HTC mail as IMAP with android. in front of the imap and smtp mail server names, on ports 993 and 465. The log in works and it shows all of my folders but there is no mail in any of them. I can send email just not receive it. A copy of the sent mail goes into the Sent folder.

Same thing as everyone else. Evo phone no GB update yet still running 2.2. Using stock mail app. Can send fine from yahoo account on phone but will not receive. Ran test from phone and desk top. Gmail is working fine in sending and receiving from phone. Everything was working fine untill a day or so ago.

No, that is not true. I don't pay for yahoo plus. I am getting emails from one of my accounts but not the other.

I still have Android 2.2 on my phone.

It seems that many of us have the same problem. I contacted Yahoo on Tuesday last week about this issue. If you have the mail problem and have not contacted Yahoo mobile mail support yet, you may want to use the following link to ask for help:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mobile/general.html

Please be clear to them that the mail problem is with HTC email client, not their own Yahoo Mail client. This may help them debug the issue. If enough of us have contacted Yahoo mobile mail support, we should have a better chance of getting it fixed.

Here is an interesting new twist to this puzzle.

I decided to test my phone/email again. Sent a test message from my home computer to my paid Yahoo account, my free Yahoo account and then CC'd from the account it was sent from. I immediately received the test message in all three inboxes on my phone. That test was done via wifi.

I then sent a 2nd test message but turned wifi off and used the Sprint phone network. Again I immediately received the 2nd test message on all three account inboxes. But here is where it gets weird. I then refreshed each of the three inboxes that had received the test messages. For some reason the 2nd test message on the free Yahoo account disappeared while the 1st test message remained.

I then checked the free email account via my browser from my home computer and was able to duplicate what I was seeing on the phone. For some reason the 2nd test message was deleted or removed from the free Yahoo account inbox.

No explanation. Another puzzle!

Added.....for an update the 2nd test message reappeared in the free Yahoo inbox on my phone some time later. The time stamp appeared to be the original time stamp from when the message was first sent/received however.

I received a response from Yahoo Mobile Mail Support. In short, they wanted me to contact Sprint. They think it is a Sprint issue. The following is their response.

"I am very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. After
reviewing the information provided, it appears you are experiencing
difficulties with the native Mail program that came with the HTC Evo 4G
phone on your device, and not the Yahoo! Mail program from Yahoo!. You
should be able to find the answer to your question by going straight to
your carrier. They're the real experts on their own stuff and can give
you the most complete information on their products and services."

HTC Mail program was working like a champ to early last week. Yahoo Mail program blows, but is the only one that works for me right now......HTC please fix!

I have had an EVO for the past 3 months and I have 2 yahoo accounts (one is ymail.com). Just like everyone else here, I stopped receiving emails on one of my accounts (yahoo.com) about a day ago. I see my folders, I can send mail, but when I try to receive email, I just have a bunch of empty folders. The ymail account seems to be working just fine, even though the server configuration is exactly the same as the yahoo account. I installed K9mail and it works on both accounts just fine. I haven't done any phone upgrades nor have I upgraded the HTC email client. I had installed profimail close to the time that I started having problems, and I thought that caused the problem, but after reading this post it is starting to sound unlikely. It doesn't seem to me, that it is a problem with the HTC email client, unless everyone on this board, installed something on their device that messed it up. Sorry, not much here except perhaps a chime of sympathy.

It's not just Sprint. My Verizon, HTC Incredible has stopped getting Yahoo! Mail as well. I am running Android 2.2 and HTC Mail 2.0.

Wish they would fix this...I missed some important emails over the weekend as I was unaware that it wasn't working until I got to a computer today and found I had missed 30 emails.

exactly. my gf is on verizon with her incredible as well. android 2.2.

I'm having the same issue with my native mail app. It just started in the last day or two. Very annoying. May switch to gmail full-time now.

I am not having a problem with Yahoo mail on my EVO. However, my friend whos is on sprint also is having problems with his HTC Hero getting yahoo mail. There is a similar ongoing thread in the sprint Hero Support and Troubleshooting forums.
