Help Battery life and battery management

I woke up at 10 this am and on my OG EVO it would be on 93% or less in no time and I would always plug it back in. But now it's 11:35 and I am on 91% and I keep turning on the screen when it goes off cause I love my purple passion skin and how everything is purple. LOL! But I read some mail and text and I played part of a Netflix that works great and the movie looked so good on the screen. Now I really need a kickstand case. I think I'll not plug it in and see how long it last but I have to work and I get no signal down in my casement of my work. I'm gonna turn off 3G and we have wifi I'll use it.

It jumps down to 93% pretty fast after charging for a long time like the OG Evo I think. Basically it is because once it hits 100% it stops charging and is actually running off of the battery but because it is plugged in it still reads 100%. Once you unplug it the battery eventually displays the actual charge level. Here this explains it way better than I ever could:

Well it looked like mine didn't jump down real quickly like my OG EVO that is what I was saying. After an hour and a half maybe 2 hours I was at 91% I think. I'm thinking this is better than OG EVO. But for some reason mine is stuck on 99% and has been and won't go to a 100. It was on an 100 before but when it got to 80 something I decided to charge it back up to have a full charge for work and it like was on 99% for maybe 5 minutes I think. But I'll mess with it more later have to go to work now.

Ohhhhh yeah I was gonna say that last night was the first time I charged over night and when I unplugged it did drop to 97% but it stayed there for quite some time while using the phone. Mine wasn't charging to 100% but I think it trickles that last 1% for hours to combat that quick drop. Just a guess on my part.

Im going on 5 hrs on my second cycle. Battery is at 35%.

Display 80%
Cell Standby 3%

Bunch if other stuff including netflix, pandora, youtube, browsing, took some pics, tried qik with my Evo etc. been going all day. Back and forth from 3g to wifi. So far I'm pretty impressed as the only time screen has been off was 30 minutes of pandora.

Should get 7hrs out of it nonstop.

Edit: A 35 minute call to sprint and now I'm down to 9% after 6 hrs. Still pretty good considering I have not sat the phone down all day.

Hey guys, the first couple of days I just kept everything at maximum and played around w/ it. Live wallpapers, weather animation, all that.

Now I want to tune it for good battery life, what are some of the things I should do, besides switching between wifi and 3g, and turning off 4g unless using it?

I picked up my EVO 3D and I'm soooo happy with this phone. My phone has been unplugged for 25 hours and I'm sitting at 95% of battery life and that's while running a live wallpaper!. Which means I lose about 1% of battery every 5 hours. However, when I woke up yesterday morning and my phone had been unplugged for 6 hours, I was sitting at 99%.

Used my EVO most of today for navigating throughout the state. So I put my EVO 3D in airplane mode so it wouldn't roam while I drove around. If my EVO 4G had been unplugged for 25 hours, my phone would be at 75%. This is just crazy HTC, pure craziness what you have done with the EVO 3D. I love this phone!

Actually... the 3D will cycle the charging... once it gets to 100%, it shuts off the charger until it drops to something like 95% then it charges back up, again. I see this watching the battery plot on my phone (via https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel.r1&hl=en ... I've run this for 1+ years and it's indispensable for tuning a phone and understanding what's really going on, I think.)

The EVO 4G would just stop charging at 100% and I went as low as 85% within a minute after unplugging in the morning.

In my experience, the biggest drain on battery is having the 3G (or 4G) radio on in low signal situations. I use WiFi at work and at home. If I don't, my battery dies in about 4 hours at work due to low 3G signal strength. When I do use WiFi, I get 12+ hours of heavy DATA use (100's of emails strewn about four email accounts that all use PUSH, 1+ hours of web use, downloading data, etc.). I average 5 minutes or less of phone use a day.

A quick test to see if this is the issue for you is to turn on airplane mode for an hour. Do whatever else you want (play MP3s, play that cool game, watch the local video, etc.). Note how the battery doesn't drain that much? The first course of action to fix a problem is to isolate the source of the problem. Try things like this to understand where YOUR drain is coming from, then you stand a chance of fixing it. No two users' usage patterns will be the same so you really have to play a bit.

If you don't like this idea, then by all means get an iPhone where someone else has decided what's best for you (and they might be right). But if you want the flexibility you have with the EVOs, then you will have to play a bit to optimize it.

Wow 25 hours running live wallpaper were you using the phone for other stuff? LOL!

I went to bed last night and my battery was on maybe 93 or so and I woke up after 7 hours sleep to 81 with wifi and 3G on. I am now at 69 and it's been a little over 2 hours. I have been adding apps and checking emails and and messing with it a little. I think the battery is good and better than the EVO. At work yesterday with no signal I had 3G off and wifi only and after 8 hours when I left work I was on 23%. But next weekend I am going out of town to a concert and will be taking pictures and will be out all night and I am curious as to how it last a day of me not working and just using it all day. I constantly go to FB text check emails check in with foursquare. So next weekend will be my test. But I am not worried cause I have 3 extra batteries LOL! But once my phone gets to 99 it seems like it takes longer to go from 99 to a 100 yesterday it never went to a 100 I had to leave last night it seems like it took 5 minutes or so. I just love this phone and think it's great. So far no battery complaints from me.

I found that its the screen that eats up most of the battery. I have been running my evo for about 17hrs now and have only dropped 4%. Buti basically havent had the screen on for mor than 30 seconds at a time. BT is on, Wifi is on, auto sync, BG data, always-on data. Checked battery monitor and cell standby is using most of the juice.... yesterday the display was taking up most of my battery and i barely got 10hrs out of the phone.

I just turned the EVO 3D on to just check the battery percentage. I haven't been using the phone a whole lot since I'm using my EVO 4G for driving around the state. Let me correct myself, my standby time is great.

After waking up this morning and taking the phone out of airplane mode before going to bed. I'm sitting at 91% after being unplugged for 33 hours! Looks like I'm averaging about 1% of battery loss now every 3.6 hours. Maybe since I'm connected to a network now, things have changed a little. I don't know. But the battery on this thing is amazing!

I use my phone a lot for texting. So it's not like I wasn't using it. I even had an hour long phone call on it. I just got it too, so you know how that is. You're on it a lot doing all sorts of stuff just to play with it. I just have everything but 3G turned off and some minor power savings settings activated. 26.5 hours!... Granted that included 6 hours of me sleeping and not using it, but I seriously don't know how these reviewers are complaining about it. It's MUCH better than my old Palm Pre.
everything is much better than the pre

so far this weekend it seems to be much better than my evo 4g. the real test will be tomorrow at work when it losses signal every 5 mins

I have done 2 cycles so far.

The first one I got 13 hours from moderate to heavy use taking videos and pics along with browsing\facebook.

Today was a little lighter due to church and napping but I'm at 44% left and have been using it off and on for 15 hours and 20 minutes.

Just wanted to see what you all are experiencing. Tomorrow I'll post back with my work day how it is.

My first cycle was 5 hours (I had just gotten it so I was on it non-stop with all the bells & whistles on)
Second was 26.5 hours
Third was 21 hours

Battery life has been very good for me thus far.

I am happy with the batt life!! I was able to get 23hrs of use with what I call my normal use. My 4G would have crashed quite a bit before that. Love it!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong... but it looks like the "Super Extended Life Battery" backplate creates a recessed area for the cameras. Right?

BACYXXHEV3D-BK-2.jpg

I really like that since it's not really a case, but protects the camera.

How is this possible? Are you talking about standby battery?

Yes, I'm talking about standby time as I posted in my previous post. Right now I'm at 56 hours unplugged with 79% of battery life remaining. I decided to let my phone roam freely instead of activating airplane mode since I had to drive a few hours from home. I know the route I take to visit my family doesn't have great coverage. Well,

So I have lost 12% of battery life while spending about 9 hours on the road with the phone NOT in airplane mode. So its been about 23 hours and I have only lost 12% of battery since my last post.

I talked to a Radio Shack rep who owned the EVO 3D and he said the phone has a way better battery life than the EVO 4G. He said the EVO 4G had a lot of battery issues and all those problems seemed to have been fixed. Take that for what its worth but the guy was very knowledgeable.

I have no first hand experience because my phone arrives today from wirefly....CANT WAIT! :)

Not sure if the problem was battery related on the EVO 4G. In my opinion the EVO 4G should have came out of the box with a 1730 mah battery like the EVO 3D. And HTC needs to give every customer their phone with ALL apps set to manual download. Then customers would have to adjust the settings within those apps in order to get the phone to download data. People would notice their battery is amazing when the phone is setup to download data manually. Then customers would see what happens when the customers lets mail download every 3 hours and weather every hours.

Even on the EVO 3D my email was setup to download every 30 minutes, Sprint Zone setup to download everyday, etc. Some people said their EVO 3Ds drained over night to 0%. Well, I would say it was probably email downloading over and over again at 30 minute intervals and whatever other apps a person has setup like: Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I'm just curious on something.

When you charge your phone and it goes to 100% are you good to go? For instance I charged my phone for 3 hours getting it back to 100 after going 28 hours before needing to.

I'm just making sure these numbers are correct. 100% means I'm good to go no matter the time it took to get there?

Is Juice Defender any good? I remember people use to sing its praises & a couple of months ago I had someone laugh at me when I mentioned I had it on my Hero (they never said why they laughed or if something better was out there) Is there something better out there? I downloaded it (& Juice Plotter) about an hour ago.

Going from the Evo 4G to the 3vo and I have to say that the battery life in the 3vo is leaps and bounds better than the OG Evo. I'm extremely impressed!

Sooooo I guess we can all agree that if the battery was going to make or break this phone.......it knocked it out of the park?

I agree treven21. I leave WiFi and GPS on (and turn off bluetooth and 4G). I'm at 7.5 hours so far today and have used it for what I'd call slightly elevated usage (mostly normal, but perhaps a bit more playing around than usual) and I'm at 80% battery remaining. Yesterday, I used it non stop, very heavy usage, even Google Earth with GPS on, watching videos on youtube, etc. and it was at 27% when I went to bed at 11 PM. This is easily the best battery life I've ever had in an Android phone.
