X minutes ago vs time posted

Let me be clear, I HATE it IN thread only, am fine with it on main page

Good point.

Also, sometimes it's useful for moderators to know in which order things were posted, but under the new system this isn't always possible with old posts. E.g, if I PM warn somebody against posting something, and a week later I notice they posted it, both the PM and their post show as a week old and I don't know whether they paid attention to my PM or not.

Exactly the point i was trying to make earlier, just explained MUCH better :)

I also preferred the old way. When I visit here - I keep in mind what time I did so that the next time I come back, I can stop reading after x:xx am/pm. But now I get confused and end up reading past the time I've already seen (10x harder since I'm a mod versus a normal member since I have to look through several forums; so I can't always remember what thread I stopped at)

Definitely prefer the old way. As someone mentioned before, I keep this tab open and know where I left off (time wise), and now I have no point of reference. It takes me far longer to go through a forum than it did before, and to be honest, I've been coming and refreshing a lot less often out of frustration. It's not as though I'll completely stop visiting or anything like that, but it's a frustration all the same.

Just a little tip, if you're in the Forum, instead of clicking on the thread you click on this
firstnew.gif
icon that's right infront of the title. It will send you to the first unread post in the thread. :) There's no need for you to scrool and find the newest post since you've left off.

Like I said, keep the old system and widen the margins. No point in leaving wasted space out on the edges when it can be used

Were it my choice, THIS, a thousand times this. ^^^^^

Edit:

This certainly helps, thanks for the heads up. Still a bit frustrating, but this makes it a bit more workable, at least for me.

It isn't the posts inside threads for me - its the thread list. I go through atleast 25 forums a day and I just can't remember where I stopped off

That's what the New Posts and New Favorite Posts links are for. :) I combine that with the nifty little icon that Roze mentioned and I don't have to pay attention to the times no matter what format they're in. Ever! Still no help for the moderator issues mentioned earlier (warnings, et al) but for us regular folk it's a monster of a time saver.

Not following since I rarely ever use the CP panel/Favorites lol.. but I'd assume with Favorites you either have to post within a thread in that forum or subscribe to that forum. That would not help since I literally go through every subforum on here throughout the week/month. So essentially, I'd have every thread in that Favorites list, making it IMPOSSIBLE to read.

hmmm I might not be getting you, woop. If you read a thread it goes unbolded. If it's bolded...then you can go to the first unread post. *lost*

If you're done with a forum for the day, you can mark it as read and everything goes unbolded. So next time you go into the thread all of the new threads (new threads with post) are bolded.

I don't use the "Mark as unread".. I go into a forum, go through the threads, and keep in mind what time I left off at. I don't read EVERY thread so on my screen, I get a mix of unbolded, bolded, which is why the time stamp is crucial for me so I don't confuse myself. And when you go into every phone subforum on here plus all the Android Discussion ones, its a hell of a lot of things to look at

Edit: I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't use this feature judging by the many posts in this thread against it :)

Maybe as an alternative it would be possible to define the members preference for this in User CP. That way the individual member could dictate which format they see on the forum?

In terms of the size of the field, maybe dropping the year from the longer format would conserve enough space to make both formats a bit more comparable.

As an example:

OLD 0: Posted June 7th, 2011 at 7:14pm
NEW 1: Posted 1 week ago
NEW 2: Posted June 7th @ 7:14pm
I like the idea of having it as an option in the User CP. Excellent idea.

Ok, I think I understand, but wouldn't using the 'go to first unread post' help you until Phases fix this issue?

Well, in all fairness, even though I think this new system is dumb, I do use the forum controls and have no problem picking up where I left off. I use the little 'show first unread' button, and I also subscribe, with no e-mail, to any thread I post in. I then use the Show Subscribed Posts to make sure I don't miss any answers to threads I'm interesting in. When I'm finished with a forum, I marked it read. I never use the timestamp. It just looks dumb ;) I browse through about eleven forums a day, nine of which I either moderate or administrate (and now ond I guide) and have no problem keeping up with it all.

Only this one has a timestamp that looks dumb. Ok, I'll stop now.

Infinite Criticism and hatred for the change wins again! LOL. I thought it would be a good idea... obviously it wasn't.

Although, just for devil's advocate sake, this is the kind of thing that - if you love it - you won't look for a thread to voice how awesome the new date system is. But on the other hand, if it totally ruins your flow/system, you're going to complain. Summarizing: maybe my idea wasn't as dumb as it now seems ;)

In any case, as usual, we're happy to let preferences of the members trump what we think is a good idea when/where appropriate!

But that's the gist of what a forum is used for. :P

Yeah but the post view wasn't the issue; it was the thread view.

Phases, if widening the margins is out of the question - maybe use abbreviations for the months? ("March" = "Mar"?)

I am so glad to see that this site is owned by an open-minded and caring individual! :D
