I just signed up for Verizon this past Sat. and I want to know if later on down the road I change my calling plan from the 700 family talk (not text) to the 1400 family talk (not text), will this affect my unlimited data plan at all?

Yes it will change your plan and you will no longer have unlimited data. :(

Well that sucks...... I guess I should change now just to be safe, either way I am getting a discount from work on the plans so there shouldn't be that large an effect on the cost.

Well, according to the memo, existing users can upgrade but still keep the unlimited data. I am not sure if it is the same as changing the plans. I would call customer service and confirm.

It shouldn't change anything. As long as you have the $29.99 data package on your plan, changing around your minutes won't affect this.

The key is getting the unlimited data for the $30 before July 7th in order to be grandfathered in.

I feel sorry for future tiered 4g users on verizon. Will be a funny day the day they realize they've actualy just hit their data cap after streaming a few hrs of netflix and are actually paying a cent more than us. Anyone who thinks, "no one is stupid enough to think they can stream without using a lot of data" best realize the vast majority of people don't glue themselves to these boards and won't get taught to switch to wifi by their verizon sales reps:)

That's the problem... The wireless carriers are basing the "statistics show that the average user uses less than 2GB of data" idea off of data that is several years old. The mobile market has exploded since them (obviously) with media streaming services and cloud services. I think that, in time, unlimited data will be back. The carriers just need to catch up to their markets.

This.

Hey guys, I just spoke with my brother who took his webinar training w/Verizon on the tiered data plan changes. He knew I was looking for wording about existing customers going from 3G to 4G. He confirmed with me that in his webinar, that it did specifically say that existing 3G customers that purchase a 4G phone AFTER July 7th, would still be grandfathered in on the unlimited data packages.

So no need to rush out on the 6th (like I was going to do) to purchase either the Thunderbolt, Revolution, or Charge. We can now wait on the Bionic.

I did ask him to send me a screenshot for proof to everyone on the boards, but he told me no because he's chicken S#%t and scared to do that kind of thing. So, we'll have to take my brother's street creds on this one.

He also wanted to tell me a data fact pointed out in his training: that said 96% of 3G customers use less than 2GB of data...and that 91% of 4G customers are using less than 2GB of data.

What are the easiest ways to actually view my data usage, preferably via my phone (as opposed to my home PC)?

So what happens when your contract ends after July 7th? will the fact of being grandfathered in stop, or will the unlimited plan continue for those who signed up pre new tier plan?

I did this in the past, since you are not changing Data plans only your voice plan, this will NOT affect your unlimited data at all. You can carry the data plan over.

Pls disregard the poster who said it will cancel the unlimited, it will not. The voice plan and data plan are seperate according to the contract. You are ok..

Unless verizon states something different in the future,

"grandfathered in" will last as long as you leave your data plan the way it is. Upgrading phones and renewing your contract will not affect the unlimited data.
Even if you upgrade from 3g to 4g, you are fine, you are grandfathered in.

What's the difference between these two?

And just to clarify it a little...

The first says that if you're on the $29.99 unlimited, it won't change on you on the 7th. You stay on your existing plan, and it won't just up and change on you.

The 2nd, says that as long as you ARE on the unlimited, then when you upgrade down the road (at least as of now), you'll still keep the unlimited on your account, and not be changed over to the new tiered plan.

Bear in mind, that it can change at any time, but..that's how it's set at the moment.

Wat's happening with the corporate discounts?? I have a 20% discount on my main line and a 20% discount on my data plan... Am I getting screwed here? I signed my contract factoring the discounts into my bill. Without the discounts I wouldn't have signed up.
