"HTC screen" and then "waiting" icon upon waking from sleep...

I have this really annoying problem that I've seen mentioned here but I can't find a specific thread on the subject. This first started happening after the December update. When I push the end button to "turn on" the phone (i.e., wake the phone up), I get a black screen with the HTC symbol monentarily. Then, once that goes away, my background appears but nothing else except the waiting icon. I've been told that this is a conflict between something I have installed and the Sense UI. Any help??

Do you have any task killers installed?
 
I wish everyone would try their phone first without a task killer. I'd bet that 90% of us don't need a task killer. It seems everyone is trying to fix a problem that they probably don't have. If the phone lags, simply clear cache and every couple days, give it a reboot, just like a computer. No problems.

I agree that 90% of the people on here don't need any type of task killer or manager, but when you have the people selling you the phone telling you have to have one......
 
I've tried my phone with and without Automatic Task Killer... without it, my battery is shit... with it, my battery is acceptable. I know some people have issues with it but for me, it's been a huge benefit. I've even uninstalled it twice just to see if there was a difference and I immediately got much worse battery life.

Also, I think a lot of people fail to distinguish between "Automatic Task Killer" and "Advanced Task Killer." I agree that Advanced Task Killer is crap but I think Automatic Task Killer is great.

Anyway, Automatic Task Killer cannot kill the Sense UI, so that can't be it. Any other suggestions?

Well, all I can say is you seem to be in the minority of people who actually believe you get better battery life with one, so looks like you'll have to suffer the consequences of not knowing how to actually use it. :D
 
I transiently had this problem. Every I re-visited the home screen (i.e. left an application) the Sense UI would need to reload. Very annoying. Probably caused by something with a memory leak eating all the memory so Sense UI can't stay open in the background.

Anyway, cured with a power-cycle.

It's not that I "believe" I get better battery life with Automatic Task Killer, it's that I actually do. I've posted a thread on here where I went about a week without it and a week with it. The only difference was the task killer. The week with it was significantly better (based upon similar use) than without it. I even repeated the process again to see if the results would be the same and they were.

The bottom line was without ATK, my battery would be dead by the time I got home. With ATK, I would go to bed and still have more than 50% left.

I still think that Automatic Task Killer gets confused with the other one and that if people actually paid attention to what they were using and used only Automatic Task Killer, they would find a significant increase in battery life.

Also, I think that there are certain problematic programs that require a task killer to shut down or will drain the battery signifcantly. If you don't have one of those programs installed, then you wouldn't benefit from it.
 
The problem I've seen with some of the automatic task killers is that they have to continue to work because there are several programs that will automatically reopen/restart on their own. It's just the way HTC/Google has written the programs. However, most run in the background and don't inhibit the functionality of other apps.

If you get better battery by using it, then I would recommend using it.
 
I tried a lot of the task killers/managers and thought they were great until I started reading about how the linux operating system works. The first time I tried going without one, I went back (only tried for a day). Now I've been without it for a week and what a dramatic improvement; not just on battery life but on speed. If if your apps are running in the background, as long as it doesn't use the cpu (which it won't) then your phone will not lag or drain battery. If you keep killing off these programs, they are going to start up again at some point. And if they start up as you're doing something else, it's going to slow your phone down; not to mention that everytime these programs start up, they are using battery power (sorry for the run-on sentence). Your phone knows when to kills tasks. Give it more than a day and you'll see how much better it is wothout.

This is an important point to stress. I found that I was killing my battery because I was always killing Facebook, SportsTap, etc... then when I would reopen these programs, it would take longer and use more power. The browser is another big one that takes a lot of battery to initially open. After awhile though, through use of other progams, Android will eventually completely close the browser and other programs automatically. They kind of "time out".
 
Sports Tap was the reason I got rid of my task killer. After everytime I killed it, I would notice that it started up again. Then when I had enough programs in the ignore list, it just wasn't worth it.

Another point to those who feel the phone can be laggy. All programs load up instantly without the task killer.

If it can't actually kill Sense then you may want to double check and see if it is trying to kill off anything Sense needs to run. I have only heard of this problem happening to people with auto task killer installed. I can't imagine it would be that much of a coincidence. It is obviously possible, but it just seems unlikely.
 
Alright... [waives the white flag]... Even though I've already done this twice before, I'm going to give it a shot (again) and uninstall Automatic Task Killer... I'll post my results.
 
I have Advanced Task Manager, and find it helpful to close apps like eBuddy when I am done using it. eBuddy kills the battery, and I dont want to be logged in all the time. When I am done using it, I kill it. I also do this for Bloo when I dont want to get updates. Things like the browser or Yelp or Google Maps I dont use Task Manager for, I let the phone do its thing.
Back to the OP's question. I have the same issue every once in a while, and dont automatically kill anything. Probably once a week I will press the green send button to wake the phone, I will get the HTC screen (the one you get after the Verizon graphic on startup). It then goes to my home screen and just like at startup is says loading for 10-15 seconds. I would say the entire process takes 30 seconds, maybe a little more. I am very aware of the apps I have installed, and this did not start when I installed something. It seemd to start right around the first OTA, but hasnt been that big of a deal since its only abount once a month. When I check my Up Time after this happens, it has not been re-set ... thus it isnt a full restart.
 
I'm wondering how the operating system deals with programs which have the permission to: "Prevent Phone From Sleeping"... as that is the main reason I decided to DL Automatic Task Killer. Am relatively new to the phone so I haven't done many tests to decide pros and cons of having vs. not having the Task Killer.

You are the first person that I had heard of that doesn't have a task killer and still has this issue. Would you mind listing the apps that you have installed? If Nick does the same, we may find a culprit in the list.
