The News of the World is to be discontinued this Sunday.
All proceeds from the Sunday paper are going to charity.
It was the UKs most popular Sunday paper, and Ireland's third most popular.
 
Wow, talk about going for the nuclear option. :eek: i wonder if there was something else behind killing of the paper? Maybe it will return in a few months under a new name, incorporated as a different company not liable for the responsibilities and liabilities of the outgoing one.

Good riddance but man, I did not see that coming.

It is(was) the most popular Sunday paper by far. I wonder what Murdoch is up to.

I wish we could clear out the rest of the tabloid trash starting with the Daily Mail and the Sun.

They are implicated in this too. I think more will come out about the Sun.
Murdoch's papers know what Murdoch wants, and the Sun will not have behaved much differently.

These papers have been feeding the public trash for decades.
 
An indication of how despicable NOTW were, is this editorial back in 2009 where they publicly gloated about the phone hacking charges not being able to stick:
No inquiries, No charges, No evidence The News of the World was the subject of some ferocious attacks...

I do hope so but I haven't heard anything mentioned about them since all of this came up. Am I missing something?

The thing is that once Mulcaire was caught, the other private investigators would have shut up shop and covered their tracks, something they must be especially good at. But one can only hope..

It is an odd question: do the people that read the paper define its content or is the content offered and people decide it is worth reading so they do, and the paper makes sure to continue to offer what their readers want?

Bottom line is a company will give the customer what he or she wants. If there is a market for the trivial junk "news," some will prosper.

In the United states, as many here know, we have perhaps a hundred "reality" shows and other programming that would never see the airwaves back in the day. We have no shortage of tabloids, either.

There is no shortage of tabloid-esque web content. YouTube, TMZ, New Your Times . . . it is unceasing and in one form or another, it will be with us forever.

Interesting to note that there was a time when there were far more "Yellow sheets" available. Many people have always wanted the good, the bad, and the ugly. Trash appeals to some people.

They are all implicated, the question is how much, and if a newspaper highly controlled by the group did one thing, its likely the rest did too, what with the NoTW's former editor the deputy of NI

That's true Bob, and the paper has focused on sex scandals BS or not, so I guess that's what the public want. And constant hating without basis on specific things/people

True, but from my time in the States, I remember them being relatively tame compared to what we have over here. Plus the circulation of tabloids in the UK dwarfs that of the broadsheets.

Not that much of a surprise. As that rather excellent article makes plain he's stabbed everyone in the back at some time, so this may be the start of some serious payback. You reap what you sow...... :D

Call me a cynic, but one thought I had with that article, excellent as it is, is why now? Obviously, that commentator and many others have known the extent of Murdoch's influence in British politics for some time. Is it just payback? Were they too scared of Murdoch before? Was there a mutual non-aggression pact between newspapers? Are they vexed that the government is so cozy with NI when the likes of DT and DM have been staunchly Tory for so long? Or are they trying to get the government to to curry their favour in the vacuum left by the NOTW?

Anyhow, I've got some new found respect for Hugh Grant (and we get to see how amoral those involved in British tabloid journalism are:

I fear the main reason is the same one that has caused all the problems for NI.... chasing circulation. There are tens of thousand like "Disgusted from Dagenham" out for blood so there'll be a mad scramble to see which newspaper can claim the highest moral ground now. :rolleyes:

Plus it must really hurt that it was The Grauniad, for so long the cuddly left-wing liberal publication, that blew the lid off this mess. Skilled and dogged investigative journalism trumped dirty tricks and huge slush funds once again. It's not quite a UK Watergate, but the parallels with Woodward & Bernstein aren't misplaced.

Google Plus really came along at just the right time for this.... +Jeff Jarvis has been sharing some thoughtful and thought-provoking insights into this and the whole question of regulation of the press.
