The @messaging.sprintpcs.com usually allows some web based services to send you SMS updates. I have run in to this when wanting to get automatic updates on flight status from Southwest Airlines. I usually have to put my phone number followed by @messaging.sprintpcs.com. Think of it as a bridge between e-mail and SMS. Sprint used to have their own e-mail service and this is where you would have used the user name. These days, it is only used to log the phone into the web service. You shouldn't ever have to use it.
