Help Linking contact to facebook manual?

HTC has it done right... when I had the Eris it linked everybody up correctly, even if the names weren't the same and the contact name was default, not the facebook name. Oh well... the biggest thing I use it for is the contact pictures. As far as I'm concerned, I'll just save pics and put them on contacts. For me, that'll work just as well.

See what you mean, something has changed. I used to be able to override the FB names in my contact listing. But now, those names take priority over mine.

Not only that but in a couple of cases, I've lost the pairing link when that person changed their name in Facebook.

Hoping this is only a temporary glitch.
 
My problem is related, but different. I have two facebook contacts (husband and son) with similar names.

Although the email, DOB, telephone etc are different for each, when I sync it insists on merging them into one contact. I gave my husband a different name ("Dad") in the contact list, but it still insists on changing my son's name and merging their info. After everything I read about the need for the contact to exactly match the FB name, that seems odd.

Ok, solved this.....under the merged contact, select "menu" then "edit". Then select menu again and the option is there to "separate". Nice!
 
There should be a social networks section for each contact where you can select from a list of supported networks and enter a user name for each one that you want. So a contact could have a Facebook username, Twitter username, etc. Then you should be able to specify whether their picture (or whatever other info field) should be pulled from one of those sources, or from another source. That way you get to keep control of whatever parts of the contact info you want, and let the rest get filled in by the networks.

I wish I could carry out this task as effectively as you have explained. The problem is when I go to my FB app, I click on Friends, my friends' pictures as well as their names come out, hence u can't "press on the picture" without clicking on the name which takes you to the person's FB profile. I've searched high n low to sync my FB contacts to my phone contact without actually changing the names of the phone contact. It keeps changing the names on my phone n it get's pretty annoying.

Pls elaborate concisely step by step how I could resolve this problem cus I have a feeling it worked for ya. I think I just don't get it from your previous explanation.

this is for htc desire hd
goto main page
goto people app/contact list,
click on person that you want to link
click link button on top right hand side
click "all contacts" to select to link 2 contacts already in your list. e.g mobile and facebook pages of a person
or select facebook for htc sence to select to link mobile to other facebook page

I have then same problem. My brother and my uncle are both named "Michael" (same last name), but my uncle has his middle initial in his FB profile name ("Michael C"). Anyway, I do what you've described here all the time but every time FB syncs, IT REJOINS THEM!! UUUUGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have a solution for this?


Edit: I take that back. It doesn't rejoin them upon syncing, maybe upon readding my FB account and doing the initial sync after installing a ROM.
 
Go to contact in contacts app.

Hit:
Menu
Edit
Menu
Join

It worked most of the time for me (sometimes I couldn't find a facebook friend though)
 
I know this thread is old but an alternate method:

Go to your phone contacts, go to display options.

Your Facebook account is here, tap it, then tap to show "All Contacts"

Your Facebook friends all show up now in your list of contacts.

Find the Facebook contact, then "menu" edit contact.

Hit menu again, then you'll see the button for "Join"

Now you'll see recommended contacts that have the same name or last name. If the contact you want to merge it with doesn't show, hit all contacts.

Pick the contact you're merging the Facebook one to, and there you go!

EDIT: Forgot to mention you should go back to Contact display options and uncheck "All Contacts" for your Facebook account (that is unless you want to have all your Facebook friends cluttering up your Contact list).
 
OK an alternate easier way.

In the Facebook app, search "Friends" for the contact you are looking for.

When you open up the friend/contact tap on the profile picture in the upper left.

The little pop-up appears and you can tap on the "contact" icon to open up the Facebook friend/contact in Android.

Edit, then join, then you can pick any of your contacts to join it with.
 
Ok so I used to be able to do this much easier, but after a hard reset, I found another way. Go to the contact that you added, not synced from fb bc it wont allow editing. Edit contact. Highlight # by holding and select all. Then press the button on far left ....what's it called? Next to home button. Select join and find contact to link it to.
