Wait for Gingerbread or Root?

Hi

First time poster. If someone with rooting knowledge can answer the following questions it would be really helpful.

1. Will we get sense.com for the Original Desire along with the gingerbread update

2. Is it worth waiting for the OTa or simply root?

3. Which is the best custom rom for Desire with gingerbread. I'm looking at RCMix but i also want a good battery life and good radio (my reception plays up)

Many Thanks in advance

I would:

1. Root
2. Get a custom ROM based on it once available - such as LeeDroid - if you're that bothered about trying it.

Sods law the new version will have a new HBOOT that you'd have to wait on unrEVOked to hack to get it rooted anyway!

1. No I doubt we will ever see sense.com....for what its worth I've heard it doesn't really work well at all....your best to use 3rd party app off the market which does the same.

2. The OTA will supposedly be with us by the end of the month BUT it will fix the internal memory issues a little BUT I don't think as much as the custom ROMS which have Apps2SD+ or Data2SD do...

so yea best answer I can give is for you to root and install a custom...and as to what custom? well.....have a look around here and over at XDA and just pick which ever you want really lol

How much about rooting do you understand? Have you read the rooting FAQ's in the root subforum here?

The 2.3 with Sense 1.0 wont be much different from what you have now. You can get newer Sense roms on the desire if rooted, like sense 2.0 (Desire HD) or even sense 3.0 (Sensation / reflec style) that work with sense.com

Dont think sense.com is all its cracked up to be though.

I asked myself the same question, and decided to root.

It was a lot easier than I thought, now have the latest Leedroid ROM with A2SD+, which gives me plenty of room for apps.

Plus, Titanium backup is great.

For those that don't want to root or bother themselves with such matters - it is certainly worth to wait for the update.

For those that are thinking about rooting - just do it. You will have more choices (Sense or Non-Sense) than you would get with the official HTC ROM.

Please discuss rooting related questions in rooting section!

This is a general discussion to wait for the official update or to root.

I have the same dilemma. At the end of the month, I will have had my desire a year without rooting. I may as well wait and see 2.3 before I root now

Can someone help me on this.... WHY?

Is there some new killer function that my life would end without if I don't get gingerbread? or is it just to say that my 18month old piece of tech has the latest version of the operating system...

No, I suspect most casual users may be a bit disappointed. It's a less obvious update than Eclair to Froyo, and most of the changes are under the hood.

There are changes: power and memory management have been tweaked, move to SD moves more of the app than with Froyo (major effect with some apps, no different with others, depending on how they are structured). And there are a few look and feel tweaks, though HTC may hide some of these with their Sense software.

But I guess we'll read a lot of "is that it?" posts when it finally does arrive.

My thoughts exactly....

My only complaints with Desire are memory and keyboard, if these are addressed in official GB I'll be happy. Otherwise Root (assuming the OTA does not lock out rooting).

Mine only copies it into the dictionary if I press the Orange word seletion at the top.

Yep, that is true but if it is recommending a different word to the one you just typed you have to select it, and once you do......

Eg.

Type 'Cobby' and it will offer 'Lobby' in green (but I actually wanted 'Cobby'), select 'Cobby' and get word saved. You can select the drop down which gives the option to add word or exit, if you select exit you are put back to where you start, if you click the word it'll save it.

Their is no way of entering a word it does not know it will insist it storing it, that is fine but their are times when you don't want things stored.

I'm by no means an expect but I would root. Its the best thing I've ever done. There is a great guide on this website.

I was a complete novice and ive rooted, installed a rom, partitioned my sd and themed and it was a lot easier than I anticipated.

Try this:

  • Delete cobby from your dictionary.
  • Go somewhere and type cobby. Lobby is highlighted to the right of cobby.
  • swipe left on the track ball to highlight cobby but do not press trackball.
  • Press a punctuation - space, comma, full stop etc.
  • check your dictionary

That worked but I still thinks clicking on the word should not store in dictionary (pretty sure the GB version I tried didn't do that)

Rooted my Desire for the first time yesterday, and put Cyanogenmod 7 on it. Not as happy with it as I thought I would be. A lot of force closes, and for some reason the LED notification isn't working when I receive an SMS in Handcent. It's driving me nuts! How do I fix this?

As I'm very new to this, can someone tell me how I go back to the official HTC ROM when Gingerbread is released, if I decide I want to do that?

Is that a possibility? locking out rooting?

They did it with the Desire CDMA, with Hboot 1.06. Alpharev eventually got round it when Unrevoked had given up. They released a statement saying they were locking it out, but they changed their mind after huge petitions etc.

Whether its too late for the next set of updates is anyones guess.

It took about 3-4 months for the 1.06 devices to become rootable.
