Help updating swype, which crashes

I have an LG Optimus V which came with Swype pre-installed.

I love the keyboard -- what I don't like about it is that it crashes fairly often. The Swype button and the one next to it go blank, and the keyboard won't accept any input. In order to recover, I have to switch to the Android keyboard (which also doesn't accept input), wait a while, then the keyboard will reactivate, I can go back to Swype and it will work fine.

Until it crashes again.

Swype has NEVER updated to the best of my knowledge, so I was wondering if there was a way I could update the software myself. Or if there was a better (faster) way to recover from these crashes, I'd love to know about it.

I'm using Swype version 2.8.50.12867, if that helps, but I still can't find a way to update the thing.

As far as I know, you can't update it since its pre-installed.
Keep in mind that I'm not positive about that (I hope I'm wrong cuz mine does the same thing.)
I got SwiftKey X from the Amazon app store and I like it, but I like my swype too lol
 
yeah I would have gotten swiftkey too, when I saw it, but I don't have the space on my phone. So.
 
I gave you the steps just before your post. Its real easy to do with titanium backup to remove the original that came on your phone.
 
oh, yeah. Duh me.

Well, doesn't help anyway. On the Swpe beta page I saw this:

  • If your phone came pre-installed with Swype
  • DO NOT download this beta (it won't work)

Oh well. I'll poke around their forums and see if there's a way I can update the program.
 
Thats why you root then uninstall you won't be updating whats pre installed you'll be installing the beta so just ignore that warning sign up and they'll send you the installer through your email and you use that to install it. Everything runs directly on your phone.
 
okay I finally managed to get the Swype beta installed on my phone. However, I note that it is taking up over 8 megs of my precious (to me) internal memory on my phone.

It's also now listed in the uninstallable/Phone Only section of App2SD.

From some other reading I've done on this forum, I know that there's a 'user' partition and a 'system' partition -- since I uninstalled the original Swype (after making a backup with Titanium), how then can I stuff the Swype beta back into the system partition where it belongs?

Put another way, I need to know how I can reclaim that 8+ megs of space, preferably without going back to the original Swype.

You could probably just use link2SD to put it on the SD card. Just a suggestion. I have not done it myself and I do not know how it will affect swype.

yeah I thought of that. Unless link2SD somehow does more than app2SD, Swype won't move over to the card.
 
You can try telling Titanium Backup it is a system app. Not sure if this pushes things to the system partition or not. Other suggestion would be as KK said, Link2SD.

a long press on the Swype entry gives me a "convert to system app" choice. To access that I have to buy the program. Nyargh!

Maybe I have a gift card lying around here, or something.
 
swype links to sd. If your rooted you should be using link 2 sd not app 2 sd at all. App 2 sd will only move part of the app as well as only apps that give permission. Link moves the complete app even if its not built in to the app. It works completely different than app2sd.

A wise purchase. One of the first I made myself. I wasted a lot of cash on apps for my iphone. I told myself I wouldn't spend more then $10 on android apps within the first 6 months. This was one of the few I've had to have. Amazon's free app of the day has help me go a long way to my goal.
 
I moved Swype with link2sd and it quit working. I unlinked and had to reinstall, works fine now. I'm leaving on internal, since I still have 101mb NOT moving it to SD.

makes sense, based on what I know of Android mechanics. I had to go back to the original Swype that came on my phone, because the Swype beta quit working on me ... I have yet to install a new ROM on my phone, but will go back to the beta after that.
 
Are you rooted? Surprised you "don't have space" on your phone if you are. I have 91 apps (mostly linked with link2SD) and Swype Beta on internal, and vary between 90 and 105mb free. The Beta is so much better with word suggestions "out of the way".

yeah, I have perma-root. I do not have link2SD, though; I just found out about it and figure it would be easiest to do if I got a new card to use with it.

I really liked the Swype beta the few days I was using it. I was sad to go back, but it quit working after I restarted my phone.
