Anyone here planning on buying a HTC Magic?

You say that like it's the phone's fault for not being able to save to SD... O.o

Here we Go AGAIN !!

I think we must ask ourselves who is at fault ...

Did Google under-spec the phone ?
Did HTC say to Google this is All we have ... take it or leave it ?

Of Course no Question Google knew the amount of memory the phone had.
Google knew that their OS did not allow for storing apps on the SD ...
Was it their plan to add that ability later ??...
Then the security hole was exploited -- Everyone initially had root ..

IMHO ... Google is the principal one to hold up to criticism !!
IMHO ... Google will be the ONE to get the praise and $$ ... when it is Right!

So technically it is both their faults .. HTC for offering up a limited internal bank of memory !! and Google's for accepting it and then NOT exploiting the use of the space available with the SDCard ...

Interesting you don't hold Tmobile at fault. I am not saying they are/aren't but they are an important player and do get to help decide the build US users see/use. They have a history of limiting things.

Wait a sec....

I didn't mean for this to cause an argument.... O_O

This is in no way an arguement ... just FINE points of discussion ... and opinion

Oh....well in that case...allow me to share my opinion...

Whether or not Google and HTC were in talks during the production of both the operating system and the actual phone....

Google still have the capability to make the necessary changes to the OS....but it seems that they don't want to (yet...?)

I'm not gonna blame Google....because this could be in their plans for the future...

I'm saying if the phone can only do so much...then it's up to the operating system to make the most of what it can do...

That's actually very contradictory what I just said... =/

Sorta sounds like you are torn as to whether they (google) should be blamed !!

I blame the entire Open Handset Alliance. All 47 firms. It's just that simple!

HTC's website says that the G1 has 256mb ROM/192mb RAM. The magic has 512mb ROM/192 RAM.

I think it's just best to say at this point....

"Each to their own..."

I won't get angry at Google for not allowing saving to SD card...because it doesn't bother me...
If you want to..I'm sure you have a valid reason to do so...

At the end of the day...it's Google's thing...
They do what they want with it...

Yeah, the Magic does also have double the memory. This in companion with the increased battery capacity leads me to believe it is the Dream/G1's successor, and not a simple "rehash minus the keyboard" as I've read on a few tech sites. Granted, the specs are by and large the same, but the 1.5 software update and slightly increased specs where it counts (memory, battery, and possibly camera if that FCC photos hold true), make me think it is truly worthy of the moniker "G2".

Well, the post above mentions about the double memory, but aside from that i think there is very little difference.

I actually just went in to town to play with a G1, and thoroughly loved it. I am actually about to order one i think. The phone and the OS impressed me very much.

I was interested in the HTC magic until today... the samsung i7500 is coming.

http://androidforums.com/android-ne...owered-samsung-i7500-heading-deutschland.html

Maybe this is why we're not hearing anything about a G2 while the rest of the world is getting the Magic. T-mobile might have gotten the G2 approved just in case Samsung took too long to release an Android handset. The Samsung could be the G2- 8gb memory, 3.5jack, 1500mAh battery, 3.2" oled screen- it trumps the Magic.

But it's samsung! I personally really don't like samsung phones and would rather get the magic. Each to their own though.

Agreed. Hopefully this will spur HTC to be more generous with internal memory, battery life, and the 3.5mm jack.

i think the samsung phone will be MUCH better than any HTC phone. ESPECIALLY if it's available on the SPRINT network.

I've pre-ordered a Magic in the UK.
I've had an ongoing debate in my head for a while about waiting for the next generation of phones or getting a G1 on a cheaper deal... it's a never ending debate though as the goal posts move every day... and I thought I'd share my conclusions as to why I've ordered a Magic

G1
Whilst a keyboard would be nice, I don't want to be on T-Mobile. I live in a rural location with poor service. So it was never really an option.

Magic
"Improved" memory
Rather stylish IMO
"Improved" battery
Aside from this, it's a skinny G1, but on Vodaphone... much better IMHO.

So I pre-ordered one only 2 days ago and ALREADY i7500 has been announced. I mean, I know the next phone is usually out pretty quick once you've finally jumped in but it would have been nice to actually have the Magic in my hand before being told it's out of date ;-)
Seriously, the i7500 looks very tasty and I've heard a lot or Magic pre-orderers are cancelling and that was my first thought. But is it THAT much better? For my needs anyway, not a lot... here's why...

i7500
Even better battery... but only a little
More megapixels and a flash. Great! But personally, I just take the odd snap anyway so it's not really a deal breaker.
Standard headphone jack... about time!! But again personally, this is no biggy as I have bluetooth headphones.
And PROBABLY be on O2... which is better than T-Mobile but Vodaphone will always be my supplier of choice.
As for looks... it's nice but I prefer the Magic... and I think I'd miss the trackball.
What does impress me with the i7500 is the memory capacity. Now that is a big improvement. But the Magic already has double the memory of a G1 which means double the apps taking it 60 or so? (going on various posts I've read). That's enough surely? And music and video etc can be stored on the memory card anyway. So while the extra memory is very very impressive... would I personally use it? Jury is out on that one.

So in short, I will stick with the Magic I've got on pre-order. Partly because, in my day to day life, the i7500, sexy as it is, won't offer any amazing differences, partly because I simply like it, but mostly as I've already ordered and paid for a Magic case :-)

Really? You prefer Vodafone to O2?

Is that just because of where you live..or some sort of past experience?
Or maybe because you've always been with Vodafone?

I personally....don't like Vodafone all that much...I thought their service was rubbish...

I've been on most major networks and found that O2 are my preferred option with T-Mobile coming in second...

Which is why I have both an O2 phone and a T-Mobile phone...lol...

Vodaphone has the best reception on this wee mountain in North Wales I call home. I know a few iPhone users who get on fine with O2 up here having said that, but T-mobile isn't great.

Well that's curious. That would be very good news but I've not heard this anywhere else and I've been keeping close tabs on the Magic.
I suspect it's an site error... I think this would have sufaced by now as it's a pretty big deal if true. But I'd LOVE to be wrong

Well technically you can store any file on the SDCard ... running the app from there is another thing all together....

So the statement may just be a slip in using the proper terms ...

Ver. 1.5 has been looked and tested by lots of people and I dont recall hearing that Running of apps for the SDCard was in this offering ... but it would be "Awesum" if it were true

I don't think that's correct...

Unless it's some last minute thing Google added to give everyone a surprise...which I highly doubt...

I think they've just said that to market the fact that it's coming with a 8GB card (which is great in itself...)

Does anybody know where I can buy the Magic without a plan? Im going to search ebay as soon as some major releases come but anywhere else?

and any Idea about the cost
