Easy Root First Try!

Congrats and nice to see some do read, and also make sure you flash a recover and create a Nandroid backup before you remove anything.

Just Rooted using Z4Root. followed the steps on this thread:
http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/333480-first-time-rooting-need-steps.html

Post 5 by rb312102. very useful. no questions asked thats how easy it was.
Also followed some info by DonB on his sticky. im excited to start removing bloatware... after i sleep.

Total time following process: approx 30 min.

next step, Titanium Backup.

Congratulations on rooting! There are literally dozens of threads here outlining the steps very well. ;)

It is nice to see that you were able to pick up on one of those threads and use the instructions given therein. Not having to reinvent the wheel the one hundredth time is sometimes nice, though we never shy away from helping or explaining things again! :D

Don't listen to DonB anymore...he is a troll and will Brick you beloved Hero....
J/K!!!!

Enjoy.....now go flash a rom....F-Sense!

Thanks to all 3 if you. Your posts in other threads were helpful and after lurking and reading a bunch of info on here, xda, and a few other sites I was able to do it easily. I like sense but thinking about a new ROM since I don't use the scenes. Still debating which one first though. As for backup. I stayed up to do that first before sleep.

do have a question though about removing bloat. Will I have any issues using windows 2000 pro? I like using extinct hardware lol.

You can remove bloatware directly on your handset. Just install an app called Titanium Backup.

A word of caution though. Be careful what you remove as certain things are required for running Android. I would advise looking for a list of safe apps to remove. I know that there a few of those lists on this subforum, but the obvious Sprint bloatware is the first that should go.

yeah i did titanium backup and nandroid before i touched anything and have backup copies of my sd on my computer now. i thought i was able to do it on titanium backup but didnt know how until i started clicking the apps. so after i was comfortable with the root, step 2 came...

Step 2: New Rom! so after going through the list of roms available on the XDA forums and finding the steps to reflash here, i was looking for something that was a bit faster but similar to what i was used to (Sense), and stable. Result: LiquidSense 2.1.1 Stable (Odex). Kernal 2.6.29.6-DecaFuct. Comes with all bloatware removed except google maps, other non needed programs, and overclocked/capped to 691mhz. so far no problems, even rebooted a few times to make sure nothing breaks. only thing i see so far is that the lights for my trackball dont come on and the button lights come on in dark lights using the auto-brightness sensor.

Step 3 to come.. looking for something a bit more custom and how to make a different splash screen and lock screen like the new version on sense. looking into the rom NFX-Hero 2.2.1.update1 Deodex and ODEX, Formerly known as ZenHeroFX. we will see what i end up doing though :)

well after doing some searching, i found the lockscreen i wanted was from Sense 3.0 but not finding any luck with getting it until i googled it... then came across and found the app Agile Lock on the market. looks like this Sense 3.0 Lockscreen for All Phones (Agile Lock) - xda-developers and can be downloaded for free. i downloaded some random apps in chinese and removed them once i unlocked the full version. no more looking for custom lock screen. now just looking into custom boot and spashes.

saw this so its supposed to work for ours, i was something a little different, but you get the idea.. xda-developers - View Single Post - [Boot Animation] Decepticon

I saw that HTC Sense 3.0 lockscreen too. Anything that requires me to download other apps seems a bit suspicious to me. :)

This is especially true if I cannot read the language they are using. I passed on this lockscreen because of that and because a lot of the malware apps seem to come from China. No offense to China or to Chinese people or anything though. I am just very careful about what I install. ;)

The sense 3.0 lockscreen is a great app, but i just dont think the hero has the HP to run it well. I tried it, hell even bought it (ive spend $1.30 on worse haha) and it really just didnt work well.

i have been using it for a bit now, havent had any problems with it really, only thing i dont like is 2 things, first when you use a short cut it starts the program over, example, lets say you were texting and put the phone down without exiting out, when using the text message short cut, it reopens the message app and when backing out, you have to do it 2 times. Second, my clock weather widget doesnt do the weather overscreen thing when you unlock it, like showing clouds when its cloudy out. i actually start and stop the app depending on what im doing on the phone. hoping for an update later that fixes it.. the last update fixed the black lockscreen wallpaper when using something different than the wallpaper.

so that was fast, got bored with liquid sense and bit the bullet and went with gingerbread. 2.3.4, i downloaded the version DonB posted in another thread here and reflashed last night. dont know what i was thinking on waiting on this, i like it.

it is definitely worth it to have the newer version of Android installed. There are a lot of improvements as well as security fixes added.

I am glad you are enjoying your new ROM. You can always try out CyanogenMod 7.1 too as that is an Android 2.3+ ROM as well.
