File Transfer - Charge Not Showing

sbrement

Lurker
I am new to the droid world. I connected my Charge to my pc but it is not being recognized. Do I need to download a driver? Any thoughts?

If you look in your notification bar while it's plugged in do you see a USB icon? Drag down the notification bar and tap on USB connected and then allow it to connect as storage.

Please confirm that you see the USB notification. Then you should be presented with this screen when you tap it ...

Do you get that?

If not, what exactly happens?

I just grabbed that screen from a random website. It appear to say "off" where it should say "on" and you want to tap that button. You will then get a prompt informing you the sd card will be unmounted. Allow that and the the Android robot turns orange. THEN you should see the phone pop up on your PC as a flash drive. It will be assigned a drive letter.

I've got the exact same problem, not new to the Droid platform. I'm able to mount the 16GB MSD card from my Moto-Droid and copy from it, but then when attempting to attach the Charge, I can't see any removable disk in explorer. I'm running Win7 Enterprise, am able to attach numerous other USB storage devices (external HD's, flash mem sticks, Moto-Droid) just not the poor Charge.

Any idea's, is there a security configuration in the Charge somewhere I've missed?

Thanks

Samsung phones are set by default to connect in Kies Mode. On the Captivate it's in menu>settings>applications>usb settings but on the newer phones I think they changed the location. menu>settings>usb storage perhaps. In any case you want to change it from Kies mode to mass storage or ask on connection.

Thanks for that pointer, while not my problem.. I'm going to do a little more reading about the options there.

I should have known my problem was MicroSloth related... Rebooted and BAM! Instant access and mounting! Go figure right?

I actually just figured this out yesterday. It's the same problem I used to have with my Sansa. Evidently the Droid Charge is just a power-hungry beast when it comes to the USB.

On my computer, I can't use my front USB connector, and if I plug it into another pair of USB ports, it can't be the one that has my wireless mouse transmitter plugged in (next to it). It has to be plugged into a usb port that is not sharing any other devices.
I suppose an alternative would be to use a powered USB hub.

So in summary:
1) use the cable you got with the charge (or a thicker one)
2) whatever group of usb ports you use on the computer, make sure the charge is the only thing plugged into those (most ports are in pairs)
3) if you are using a usb hub, make sure it is powered.

I don't believe either the Charge or the Fascinate (my previous phone) support Kies mode. I know we could never use Kies to get firmware updates previously. I'm pretty sure that's a GSM-only product since it is usually used to distribute firmware internationally (from what I've read).

That isn't the problem with the charge.

Actually I have pretty good luck with SwiFTP. The connection is a little stubborn once in a while and I had to reboot Windows to get it to work once but all in all it works pretty good. I think the actual problems come from my computer. I think M$ still likes to consider itself to be the only kid in the sand box.

It took about 5 minutes to transfer a 1.2 GB m4v movie file. I actually had more problems with the USB connection than with SwiFTP.

I just fixed this same issue on my phone. Here was my solution:

1) Go to Settings, USB Settings and change the option to Media Player.
2) Plug the USB cable into your phone and computer.
3) Let it do its thing for a bit, I waited a minute.
4) Then ungracefully, remove the USB cord from the phone.
5) Go to Settings, USB Settings and change the option to Mass Storage.
6) Plug the USB cable back into your phone.

Enjoy. Hope this helps someone else.

Good to know. What exactly are your menu options under USB settings?

Now that I have my Charge plugged into its own USB slot (usb are in pairs, and the 2nd slot doesn't have anything plugged in) I tend to leave my Charge set to "USB Debugging" mode. It works just as well if I go into 'USB settings' and tell it to "Ask on connection"

I haven't re-tested using the "Mass storage" mode yet, but I'm successfully transferring files with the other two methods these days.

*edit* dug out my USB cable from my old Fascinate. If I have the Charge set to "Mass storage" then when I plug it in using that cable, all I get is my Computer showing an extra "CD Rom" drive. When I unplugged it and set it back to "Ask on connection" it recognized the Charge as being a removable Mass Storage drive.

*edit2* I should point out that this is using the GummyCharged Froyo Rom in Windows 7 Professional (64-bit edition). I'm not sure if Mass Storage mode would work using the original rom right now or not (since it worked the first day that I had the phone).

Hi guys. I have a different Samsung phone that is equally power hungry. We all had issues with USB connection when these phones first came out. My advice...

1. Get a beefier data cable. Blackberry cables are beast.

2. If on a laptop, plug into the USB port closest to the motherboard.

3. If on a desktop, plug into the USB ports on the BACK of the computer.
