Help Noob Questions: phone freezes, etc

klintala

Newbie
Just got my first smart phone yeaster.. I love it already.
I just have a few questions to make sure I didn't get a lemon

I've been browsing the web for 15-30 min. And i've noticed the phone has got a little warm.. not burning hot but warmer than any nonsmartphone i've ever owned.
i'm guessing this is norman.. I was just expecting it to take a little longer for it to get warm.

Second:
the bar at the bottom that guesses the word you're gonna type sometimes doesn't go away.. maybe because I switched apps in the middle of typing.. and I couldn't figure out how to get it off. Is their a way to turn it off completely..
and is it normal for it to stay up when switching apps in the middle of typing

Third:
I've noticed a couple small freezes.
one time I had to press the sleep button a few times.. then once it kicked it, it finally triggered all of those.. opening and closing the lock screen.
also sometimes when opening applications is freezes for a second before opening.

No major problems.. I just want to make sure this is typical so I don't regret not speaking up!!

Thanks!

I've had a little bit of what you describe in #1 and #3. Nothing too bothersome, I would think it is normal. Hopefully some of the software quirks get ironed out on a future update.

As for #2, I see that as well and it does bother me. If someone knows how to turn it off completely please let us know.

Thanks.. I really appreciate it.
I just wanted to be safe.

Also.. droid 3's have a 16GB internal HD, and and hold up to a 32 GB SD card on top of that correct??
because everywhere I look I see people saying "the SD" as if their phone came with an SD.. and also one of my apps say I have like 12(or something) GBs. Left on a mounted SD but I never put one in.. and I assumed that the 16GBs is comes with is seperate from the "up to 32GB" SD aviability. I opened the back and it looks like their is a slot for an SD.. but why does that app say that I already have an SD?

Thansks

1) Every smart phone I've owned/used has done this. (LG Ally, Droid, Droid 2, Droid X2, Droid Charge, and Droid 3) (Note, I only owned 3 of those, the other's belonged to friends)

2) This is a bug in all D3's as of right now. To get it to go away, close your keyboard, then reopen it. Or, while you are still on the screen that you are typing on, hit the Back button once.

3) I haven't experienced this problem, if it doesn't clear up, you may want to consider getting a replacement.

edit-
To your last post.
The SD that people refer to is the internally mounted SD card. The phone has an internal memory (very small, can't remember the true amount) and an SD/flash chip integrated in to the board. It is partitioned into two (or more) parts. There is 1 or 2GB reserved for apps (can't remember the exact amount) and the rest is for your files. And yes you are correct in the D3 handling up to a 32GB card.

Thank you!!

I think the freezing thing is just me moving too fast and the phone just needs a second to catch up.

I have another question which is verizon related.. but i'll just ask it here because i'm sure you guys could help.
How does gps on a verizon phone work. Verizon has a $30 a month gps plan, but I know people who have iphones through Verizon that use a gps all the time(w/o any type of gps plan)
is their an app I could download.
I know there are a lot of cool apps that's use gps, and I noticed undersettings that there is an option for a standalone or thrid party gps… or something like that

I just want my phone to know exactly where I an so I can take advantage of the location based apps

Thanks!!!

Google Maps is free GPS, just don't use "VZ Navigator" or whatever it's called.

Google Maps runs though, well, Google, and it's completely free.

Awesome!

I noticed that I had to cheack "standalone gps services" for any apps to use gps.
I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be charged extra for that.
also what does the "google gps" option do? Its right next to the stand alone option.
but I can use google maps with or w/o it on.. as long as standalone is on.

Thanks for all the help.. they need to make a bigger manual!

When texting horizontally.. the bar at the bottom doesn't go away once i've finished.

Does this happen with everyone? I have to close and reopen (as stated above)..
but this happens everytime
EDIT: fixed... hitting back before closing the text window takes this away.
I was hitting home to leave texting which would leave the bar up.. just have to hit back twice, or back then home!

Another question..
when adding a SD card does the OS fill up the built in memory first or does it just start dividing amongst both cards?
any good links for the ins and outs if of this OS?
I was searching through some files and I noticed several files and folders that I couldn't figure out the purpose of. I'm use to osx so i'm new to the linux worldQ

Nope, no extra charge for using Standalone GPS.

The Google GPS just uses Google satellites and servies to further pinpoint your location. Without, your GPS may tell you "Accurate to 500 meters" or something of the sort. With it, it should tell you "Accurate to 10 meters" or similar. Again, no extra charge.

This is a common bug on most (maybe all?) Droid 3s. You do, in fact, have to either hit the back button while still in the app using the keyboard, or just close/reopen the keyboard. Hopefully this little bug will be fixed in the first update.

It will put everything on the internal SD card until you tell if to use your SD card. I'm not near my phone, so I can't recall how to do this at the moment.

Most of those folders that you can't figure out the purpose of are System folders and files. I personally don't know the significance of many of the folders, except that they are necessary system files.

Awesome!

I'll keep on thw look out for some kind of guide.
I just noticed that some downloaded application files seemed strangely placed.
like one pic app.. save a picture right in the main directory.. not within any app folder.
I don't want to double up on files.. and I want to know where everything is and goes!

Thanks everyone for the help and any help to come!
..its greatly appreciated!

1) for example, I jusy opened my gallery to find a picture of a random friend saved to my actual picture folder, along with a screen shot of a game a played earlier.
as far as I know.. unrooted android can't even take screen shots, so i'm confused.
and I have absolutely not Idea how my friends picture got saved.
Edit: Friends pic was in .thumbnail
^^found that the image was coming from WWF/FBImages.. I could understand maybe making a cache file or something, but it actually saved it to my phone. How did it make its way to .thumbnails?

2) also in .thumbnail were multiples of pictures I've taken with my camera.
not sure why they are there.. and what I can/can't delete.
**..after deleting, then restarting, my friends picture ended up back in my gallery.**

2) Also I have an app (fat booth) that crashes when it tries to load a picture.. it worked the first time.

3) another question I've come across is.. picsay/recent has several .pxy files
I'm guessing those are just information of recent tasks completed by that app, so they are safe to delete, correct?

4) com.motorola.bluetooth is frequently running.. BlluetoothMapService, any ideas?
also com.motorola.in.service MIMConnectivityService and RemoteImService
com.motorols.process.system pollschedulerService
..all of the other ones have an obvious purpose.. but I can't determine those, and if I should manually end them or not

any help is appreciated.

I've gone through my files via astro and googled everything I didn't know.
Everything seems pretty straight forward.

not too sure whats going on w/ the .motorolagalleryonlinecache folder (browser cache?, shouldn't that be under tunnybrowser/cache?)

and I'm guessing .taggedfriendphotos is where the tags are saved when I tag people in pictures??

also burstlyImageCache.. couldn't seem to figure that one out.

Is this the correct forum to be posting all this on?

Thanks!
