My Droid is running at 1GHZ

It's increased voltage, not clock speed, which is notorious for pumping out the heat.

wrong.

while voltage can affect heat output, increased clock speed does create more heat. period.

You cannot honestly say that doubling the clock speed of the Droid has little affect on heat.
 
Then why is the temp only 2-3 degrees different from stock vs 1.1ghz? I get what your saying about the app not being accurate for the actual processor temp, but if you compare the difference from stock to oc'd it is not much at all. Surely if the processor was burning up it would have more of a effect then 2 or 3 degrees.

I am interested to hear about all those experimenting :). Why do people have to slam others? No one is forcing anyone to overclock. What people choose to do is their choice and this is the perfect place to post about this sort of thing!

X amount of change in C is not the same amount of change in F

For example, 25*C = 77*F

a 5* change in C is a 9* change in F

If the app you (or anyone) is using displays the temps in C, I suggest changing it to F since most people have absolutely no concept of C since its not typically used in normal conversation in the United States.

I only bring this up since a 2* C difference may not seem like a lot, but thats only because people think in terms of F and assume 2* isnt much. But it can be.

Thank you for pointing that out, I didn't even think of that when doing testing. The app does do F also but it displays the temp in C in the status bar so that is what I generally go by. My findings have been that stock vs 1.1 yields a 2-3 degree change in C, the highest I have ever been able to get the temp to is 38C and that was with a case on and using the GPS for like 45 minutes while streaming with Pandora. I keep a eye on that temp at all times and will pull the battery if it gets to hot, but I know full and well that I could easily fry the internals. I also set profiles in SETcpu to 550max 125min for charging/sleep/standby so it won't be running at 1.1ghz and heating up when there is no need for it.
 
What I would like to know are the specifications of the chip and the maximum temperatures it can withstand before failing or becoming damaged. I wonder if anyone can even get a hold of this info or has this info for a similar enough CPU (as far as materials/configuration etc)
 
I don't think any chip is really safe at anything near 120F. Not a expert in this though.

I wouldn't really think so either...however, I really meant something along the lines of some manufacturer's specifications. Who makes the CPU? I wonder if we can get some specs? I am not too sure this is possible however :/.

But if 120 degrees is the max, i do not really foresee any of these chips getting that hot based on the temperatures you guys are experiencing from the OC.

On another note. I have slept on top of my droid in its case while it was charging before and the thing got so HOT it woke me up. Cannot say for sure but the thing was not just warm it was actually hot to the touch. It must have been like that for some time and my phone was fine. Hope that puts some minds at east :)

If someone has a spare droid they could always test the heat it could take by stickin it in a toaster over :) lol i'm mostly kidding of course

If the device is hot to the touch, then needless to say, its too hot. At those temps, components can be damaged, though this would have to occur with significant frequency and intensity. One time probably isnt going to do much damage.

No s*** it was wayyyy too hot. My point was exactly what you are saying. It did no damage that one time when it got incredibly hot and so a few degrees here and there is probably okay.

Not overclocked...it was brand new. I was wasted and that is why i slept on it so long. :)

Yea some users have pointed that out, but it is just the specs of what the Cortex A8 architecture can handle, not the actual TI OMAP3430 SoC we have in our Droid's.
 
Having a bit of trouble getting the WiFi update processed with the 800 MHz boot image - can anyone give me a bit of help on this?
 
Actually, now that I look I am having bigger problems than I previously thought.

I rooted, then upgraded to Sholes 1.2 - no issues there. Then I applied the evil 800MHz boot patch, and installed setCPU.

Now, WiFi is broken (trying to resolve that) as well as Set CPU showed me 800 MHz default but as soon as I tried to adjust the slider it changed back to the 550 MHz default max and I can see no way to change it.

I know I am missing something simple - but what is it?
 
^ don't select droid as your device, choose auto detect.....as for wifi,,there are fixes out there.

you can scroll up and down on the device menu.......took me a few minutes to realize that.
 
Said fixes out there that are confusing me - I can't find a good start to finish how to on the WiFi fix.

I've moved on to Pete's Bugless Beast 800, until I get this figured out - I'd much rather have WiFi working right now than anything, as I am home all weekend....
