Root Where should a complete amatuer start his education?

I bought my 1st smartphone on Craigslist 4 or 5 days ago. A Droid X. It came rooted with Apex 2.0 rc2. I have been trying to understand as much as I can about the world or ROMs and flashing. My phone seems to run fine and got a Quadrant score of 1605 (whatever that means).

Years ago I got off a bus in Morocco at 2:00a.m. I spoke no Arabic and the street signs were non-existent. That is what it feels like when I try to read the posts on the various forums. People seem to speak in initials not whole words.

I am someone who will mess with something mechanical until I break it. I would like NOT to do that with the phone.

Can anyone suggest a site that will explain all the language of ROMs and ROM flashing in a way that a 10 year old child would understand?

Thanks

I don't know if it's 10-year-old level, but this should help you out with some of the basics:
Android Terminology U D G

Then there are other pages on that site with more advanced information. Then go to the root section here for the latest information and help with problems.

+1 on the stickies. Then use this thread to ask specific questions that you have. No question is dumb so don't hesitate. And I mean that!

I would suggest learning how to sbf first. It will save you loads of headaches and no matter what happens( for the most part) you can always get yourself up and running again.;)

One question that I am confused about is, "baseband" version. Is there any reason/benfit to updating my baseband? At the moment i am at baseband version BP_C_01.09.07P in Android 2.3.3. I see that basebands are available up to .13P. I understand that to update to that level of baseband would require a bit of ROM manipulating. i guess I am asking if there is enough benefit to warrant the effort?

Baseband is the radio version your phone is using. .13 is the newest radio update out I believe and supposed to fix a few issues but I can't comment because I haven't flashed it yet.

Read and understand all stickies, there will be a quiz afterwards.

After you've done that, ask questions.

Try out your knowledge and have fun. :D

Hi there:

I have a Droid X with 2.3.3, baseband .12P.

Recently my Droid X starting doing that defect thing where the bottom part of the screen started showing bands of light (annoying)... Verizon took it back and sent me this one (specs above).

Before I sent that one back, I had SBF'd the phone with a 2.3.3 gingerbread I found online... after the phone booted, it refused to do anything. Android itself kept crashing. Anyways, I sent the phone in like that.

My Question is (knowing the above), what steps should I take first to gather up all files, that will work with my cell provider (Verizon), and allow me to root my phone. I will follow some of the stickies like everyone posted, but are most of these phones on Verizon ? I'm wondering if there's a specific place for Verizon + Droid X.

Thanks!!!!

Nathan

"Droid X" is exclusive to Verizon. I think there is another version of the phone out there for some other carriers, but they are not called "Droid X".

Thank you so much for answering my question! :)

Now that I know that, I feel much more comfortable in my searches. Can you recommend me to a page that a beginner might understand: to upgrade to the 2.3.3 gingerbread + root ?

Hi nathan, droid x is only verizon.
I believe you probably did not do all the steps when you were trying to get to gingerbread. Tell us what you would like to have on your phone and we can get you started in the right direction.

See my first post in this thread. Other than that, see the stickies.

Gandalf: I think you're right! I originally came from iPhone, and I found that unlocking was easier than rooting my Droid.. I bet I'll think rooting is easy once I get a good idea of how it works. I'm basically trying to root my phone so that I can wifi tether, and use apps that are for rooted users only. I originally had z4root, but it looks like it doesn't work on 2.3.3 (that z4root was wickid easy to use, and was difficult to mess my phone up!).

I will go through the stickies now that I know Verizon does Droid X only, and put a bit of trust into the Droid X walkthroughs for rooting.

:DThanks guys!
