Root [CDMA] HTCDEV.com bootloader unlock: s-on with CWM + root access

I've been sending twitter complaints - please join me.

http://twitter.com/#!/htc

An hour ago they had the audacity to brag that they'd accomplished something for us.

And - how does one intend to install su without recovery?

OK - you could attempt the su install via the Market.

Doomstang, you might give that a shot.

I installed Superuser from the market and it gave an error and said it placed a .zip on my SD card that needs to be installed via recovery.

I also sent a tweet letting HTC know their process has gotten me nowhere.

Right now the implied benefit is that anyone who has taken the update - AlphaRevX no longer works - they changed the bootloader.

And, I suppose for some, a root from the manufacturer is philosophically attractive.

Otherwise, unlocked is unlocked, s-off is s-off, superuser access is root - those things will get you anywhere, regardless of how achieved. ;)

so unlocking the s-off thru the mfg means you are rooted? I'm confused.

If that were true...shouldn't there be a way for me to get superuser permissions right now? I need a working recovery to get to that point though so for the moment...I/we can't even get that far.
If it were true...it wouldn't be the end of the world for me anyway because all I realllllly want is Wireless Tether.

Oh wow, I was just skimming the post, didn't know about superuser permissions & recovery. So what was the point of unlocking the bootloader? To delete some bloat?

unlocked + s-off + installation of a recovery package (Clockwork Mod or TWRP) + installation of superuser permissions = a fully rooted Evo 3D with nand access

And with this phone, you have to get nand (rom) access before getting recovery and you need recovery to install superuser permissions. Superuser permissions = root.

And all HTC has provided is a way to get to the first part - unlocked - and as of this post, there's no going further.

HTC needs to give more.

Other than changing the bootloader message, it seems to do nothing.

People were removing bloat this morning before this even hit.

Not true, it does do something else: It voids some or all of your warranty because you have elevated access!

However, I do hope they fix this issue, soon. I couldn't find anything in the Sensation forums about them having this problem. Maybe I'll try XDA's Sensation forum, next. Seems all the active posters in this forum used revolutionary.

He finally posted it: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Flashed that and it worked...installed Superuser and restarting phone now :D

Edit: wellll I still get the $ sign in that terminal and I'm pretty sure I don't have superuser permissions yet. hmmmmm

Is Super User in your app tray? If so, download something that requires root, but is quick and easy to use. Like Adfree or ES File Explorer and set it as Root Explorer in the settings menu.

Couldn't get wireless tether to work...booted back into recovery and am doing a Backup now. Once that's done i'll try again.

Oh and FYI to anyone wondering, the working recovery is Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4

When installing superuser I get the error:
E:Can't open /sdcard/su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip (bad)
Installation aborted.

Waiting for a reboot so I can put a different SU .zip on the sd card and try again.

Edit:
Ok...found a "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip" and that one seemed to install without error. Restarting now to see if it works.

Please use the one found in the revoluntionary.io wiki and see if that gets you there -

http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip

Don't sweat wireless tether - go to that as your last step - we have whole threads on getting what version of that to work in what way. ;)

~~~~~
OK - sounds like you're about there - inside Terminal, if you see a $ prompt, just type in:
su
and that should give you a superuser request followed by a # prompt.
If I was able to use "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip" is there any benefit for me to switch to the "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip" that you posted?
You will probably find that your phone won't charge while off with that version.
We can try more later - loving the progress!!!! :D
SU worked in the terminal emulator so I guess I'm good to go. Thanks for all the help guys.
I guess you can change the thread title again. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone else gets hung up on a step that I may be able to help with.
Would be so kind as to recount how you got su to install?
And in your app drawer, you should now see Superuser.
Open that, go to Settings (tab on upper right) - uncheck Notifications and please say what version number is listed towards the bottom there.
Thanks!! :)
Superuser v2.3.6.3 - Database version 5
Su binary v2.3.2-efgh
When I first downloaded superuser from the market it said it placed a file on my SD card that I needed to install through recovery. That one had failed when I tried to install it so I just searched around google after noticing that there should be a newer version available. I found a thread on XDA (through google) where somebody had problems getting SU to work so someone else gave a download to "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip" and said to try that. I put it on my SD card, booted into recovery, went to install a .zip, searched on SD card, found it, and it went through the process and said it was successful. I then restarted my phone and it worked :D
so.. Do the HTC fix then install CWM through recovery? then SU? or can I have superuser already on my phone? This has gotten really complicated for me.. LOL!!!
But you do have S-Off correct?
Thank You Doomstang for all that you did..
Haha no problem chris.
I still have S-On
First you do the HTC fix, then you install the CWM recovery (this IS the recovery). I chose to push it through fastboot but I think it would work simply placing it on the SD card named as PG86IMG.ZIP and then pressing Fastboot through the HBoot screen...it should then search, find it, and install.
Once you have the recovery correctly installed, you choose that option through HBoot screen and it will go to a new screen (or simply restart the phone if the recovery install failed).
After you have access to recovery you can install superuser (which I had the .zip of it placed on my sd card). You just have to search through the menus in Recovery to find something about install a .zip from SD card and then highlight the correct file.
Once I got a working recovery, I have to admit that the entire process wasn't that bad.
Doomstang - MANY THANKS!!!
OK - now - can you install CWM 4.0.1.5 -- or do you even want to try?
4.0.1.4 has charging issues when the phone is off.
