Just a quick question: is there a free app out there that can do screen captures on my Eris?

There isn't one, there are instructions on how to do it in the thread titled Lets see your UI layout. It's a little complicated.

Technically, that's correct - there is no app that will do this for a non-rooted phone.

There is, however, a free application (Android Developer Kit) which allows you to do screen captures from a connected PC over the USB cable.
