I rooted my Hero and have done stuff to various electronics. But this whole S-off thing is confusing me lol Any EASY guide?
 
If you rooted, then you are s-off. Getting S-off is just the beginning step of the process, but you're not rooted without it.
 
I'm not anything right now :) I want to root it. I'm not a technological noob and I've rooted various phones before but this one got to me lol
 
You need to read the guide but you are going to basically:

Use the revolutionary tool to gain S-OFF. This unlocks your phone so you can get full root access.

You will install a "recovery" program like TWRP or Clockwork. This will allow you to re-write (flash) a custom ROM (somewhat similar to installing another version of Microsoft Windows on a PC) and other tweaks on your phone.

You will install "superuser" which will give you full root access or privileges on your phone.

You have to do all three and the guide in the form is straightforward. My suggestion is to read through it 3 or 4 times. If you don't understand it, don't proceed.

This is the EVO 3D forum. But I just rooted my Hero after I switched to my Evo 3d the other week.

the Quick and Easy for HERO HERO HERO
Find the z4root .apk somewhere on xda and put it on your sd card. grab astro file viewer from the market and use it to install z4root as an app. open z4root and run it a few times until it sticks. it usually takes a few tries. once it completes and reboots the phone, you are now rooted and it installs the superuser application by itself. boom, you are now rooted

you do not have a recovery image after running z4root. the easiest way to flash a recovery is by grabbing ROMmanager from the market and using it to flash a recovery all by itself. It can flash a recovery while the phone is turned on. Then use ROMmanager to bang bang flash a ROM that it can download and install by itself. There is really no work in rooting a Hero. I recommend Cyanogen Mod 7, ROMmanager will download it for you and do all the work. It is base android platform, and either use the stock home screen or go to settings and work with ADW, it is really fun and can look very nice

Kenn pretty much summed it up.

The EVO3D comes with s-on. You can prolly find youtube videos of the Hboot screen with S-on. This simply means that the phone is locked down. In order to unlock it the hboot has to be S-off(you can prolly find videos of this as well). Once you have S-off then you want to install a recovery tool as stated by Kenn(ClockworkMod or TWRP). At that point you can choose to stay stock or flash custom roms. If you flash roms most of them will come with superuser.apk and superuser installed = root. If you are using the stock rom you simply have to install the superuser.apk yourself to achieve root.
 
Thanks I'll save that guide, will have some free time next week to mess with it. So people have successfully rooted without wiping? I DON'T want to reinstall all my apps sigh.

If all you do is root, and everything goes swimmingly, no wiping is required.

Those that run into problems (not their fault, we live in an imperfect world and it's amazing we even have a method that defeats encryption locking this phone) - or people installing custom roms - will need to wipe.

Shortly after your root, use Titanium Back (and MyBackup, I backup my backups, personally), save your apps, data, and settings - because the next step will be to use root methods to get your update that just released.

Do NOT take the OTA update to 2.08.651.2 that's going out now - if you do, you'll be locked out of rooting for while.

Correct only full root will loose her apps

You can install full ROMs without wiping. You just increase your chances of problems without wiping. Always NANDroid before attempting any flash. I've gone from Stock > SteelROM > Viper 1.3 without wiping and without issues. But, if I did have problems, I would restore NAND, wipe, then flash the new ROM.

Flashing a ROM with SU doesn't require a wipe. It's just forcing the SU directory and SU app into the stock ROM.
 
I will still maintain that for the newest rooters, simply start with revolutionary.io to get s-off, get recovery and flash the su zip file to get superuser permissions.

Then make a nandroid, wipe nothing, but use the stock rooted rom for a day or two before adding custom rom complications.

You don't need a new rom to be rooted.
If you are new to rooting, learn the tools at your disposal and be very comfortable with them - recovery, Titanium Backup, MyBackup Root - before moving on.

There are entire threads here on wiping and flashing strategies, and they're here for a reason.

The quick advice being given here may seem perfectly simple to some, but this thread is "Talk to me like I'm a 4 year old" - and anything past just getting root and getting the lay of the land exceeds that, in my opinion.

revolutionary.io (s-off) + recovery installation (Clockwork Mod is fine at first) + su-zip install = fully rooted Evo 3D with nand (rom) access

Do that, and no settings will change, no apps will be lost.

Rome wasn't built in a day, you want to have time to make the mental transition from Hero temp-root to 3vo perm-root.

After that - all the rest actually becomes as easy as people try to make it sound.

Some people can grok all of this within an hour or two of rooting, others need a few days.

Go at your own pace if this guide is for you, and don't sweat the fancy.
 
Sorry, I said ROM with SU, I meant just the SU zip file. I tend to think of anything that I flash that puts anything in /system as a ROM.
 
i'm assuming all these methods wouldn't work for the GSM UK (and i think canadian) Evo 3d owners/ or would be different in some way? I was wondering if there are any "Talk-to-me-like-I'm-a-four-year-old rooting guide/videos" for us? I'm hoping to get a evo 3d in the next couple of weeks. I want to root but stay on stock ROM, and having never rooted before I wanted to read up on everything and have everything ready, so as to be able to root soon after getting it :)

I am glad you asked!

Copying successful formats elsewhere (especially Matlock's approach on the Evo 4G), novox77 and I are collaborating on Evo 3D Rooting for Dummies.

Your steps are going to be much the same - however - your specific root files will change a bit.

We'll call out CDMA/GSM clearly in the guide.

Meanwhile, please read over the sticky posts that novox77 has at the top of the forum, plenty of good brain food right there, promise. ;) :)

thank you very much EarlyMon (and novox77) for taking the time to write out such guides, it's very much appreciated and i know a lot of people round these forums are very grateful for your help :) i used to browse the evo 3d forum very regularly before it was released in the US- but stopped coming after you guys in the US got your hands on it- and i was jealous i couldn't join in on the fun ;) i look forward to being part of the community again soon! :)
