Stratosphere Release

Apple doesn't care because their isheep will buy no matter what. They would never get an android and android fans would never get an iphone anyway.

I think this is largely true. Other than maybe retina display, iPhone isn't a very impressive device hardware-wise, but users flock to it anyway. Strikes me as bizarre that they'd even consider releasing a non-LTE device at this point. And there's no way I'd ever buy an Apple product, but it has nothing to do w/their hardware and everything to do w/their walled garden.

Only a fool would get an iphone.

Well... that's fanboi-speak. :p

iPhones work. And they are simple enough for dumb people to figure out. I've known of some stupid people (quite literally, lower intelligence) who bought android phones and returned them to get an iphone or crackberry.

Call me a fan-boi then, but I see Apple as a tool for the masses who prefer not to THINK about their phones. They want them to work well and look cool doing it.

Android, on the other hand, is for people who want to ponder their devices... to THINK about them, to customize them, to improve them, to tinker.

Yes, we think it's bad to have such a closed system as Apple, but it works well for them with very little failure and virtually no software conflicts. They think Android is bad because it's so open and subject to malware, conflicts, fragmentation and hardware problems.

Is it good vs. evil? Of course it is... and each side thinks the other is the evil one! But in reality, they are both very good at what they do for their own customer base. And they both rake in the big bucks.

I believe there's room for both to coexist in the telcom world. And the battle will rage on.

It's funny, but for a long time Apple's hardware was junk compared to PC (PowerPC just couldn't keep pace with Intel) and their OS was a disaster under the hood even compared w/Windows. But their desktop hardware is now fine (if maybe a half-generation behind) and OS X is based on some terrific internals.

And yet, their company policies prevent me from buying into any of it. Go figure!

.....Only a fool would get an iphone.

I think this is unfair. Many (most) people have no desire to tweak their phones or squeeze every last bit of juice from it. Most people simply want a phone that works well and is nice to look at. And there's nothing wrong with that. At the end of the day, a phone is a PHONE. I'm not using to be my primary portal to the web; that's what I have my computer for. I'm not using it to watch movies; that's what I have my HD TV for, etc.

I prefer Android, but even I find the iPhone form design more appealing than most brick-like android devices that are out there. I love my Droid but hate the form factor. The iPhone also has a superior screen; it's even better than Super AMOLED+ in most people's opinion because of the Retina display.

And, let's not forget that having the same manufacturer for both hardware and software effectively eliminates all the garbage I hate about Android phones (random reboots, lagginess, system apps crashing, etc.). Even the iPhone's apps are prettier. Compare the iBooks app with any e-reader device that Android market offers and the iPhone app crushes it.

I only prefer Android because they offer a bigger screen and the ability to customize ROMS. But I strongly suspect that once Apple comes out with a 4.5" Retina display, I'll probably be jumping ship and jailbreaking the crap out of it.

Yes, Apple fandom is filled with stuck-up snobs who think they are better than everyone else. But by and large, Apple products are excellent and deserve their sterling reputation.

Thank you for your calm and sensible reply, but this the internet and we have no place for such behavior.

Well said I agree with every point but I don't think I'll be buying an iphone anytime soon. It's a great product but not for me atm

Its because apple knows they can release a 3g only iphone and they will still flock to it. Android isn't that way which is why we are seeing more 4g phones.

I think it also has to do with freedom OF choice vs freedom FROM choice. As The Chief stated, we Andriod afficianados like to customize our phone experience. We like to be able to pick and choose the features that suit OUR particular needs. It's cool to talk to other android users, and compare phones and features. The downside though, is sometimes you can't get everything you want in one phone, or you have to WAIT for all your needs to converge into a single phone (for me personally, the GS2 IS that phone). For iPhone afficianados, that experience is eliminated. You just wait once a year for "Lord Jobs" to TELL you what you're getting. Want Flash, TS. Want expandable memory, TS. Want a larger screen, TS. This is what I'm giving you, you'll take it and LOVE it. Granted, the iPhone is a fine product and a single phone world would make things easier and more uniform, but not very exciting.

And Motorola's right there with 'em:

Motorola's new Droid HD makes cameo alongside Droid Bionic -- Engadget

So who beats who to the punch? Should we even buy the phones we're talking about or wait just a little longer for the "next big thing"... which could prove a never-ending cycle?

Problem with Samsung is: even if SuperAMOLED HD makes it to market this fall, it'll likely be Spring before the U.S. gets it. And I'm NOT waiting that long for a phone.

Yeah, I saw that too. It looks like slimmer Bionic with HD display, but the same 1Ghz OMAP4 processor and we don't know yet if it has LTE radio in that thin body. Spec wise that's weaker than Samsung ones.

Frankly I didn't expect it would take this long for Bionic to come out to stores. So Moto doesn't look any better in releasing much hyped super phones in timely manner.

Looks like we will see Super AMOLED HD screen within this year. Question is which Sammy device is getting it first?

Super AMOLED HD exists, tip industry insiders, big screen smartphones coming from Samsung in the fall

Pentile -. I was expecting something from the LITI process.

It has a side load SIM slot next to the SD slot. Good sign.

At HD resolution, the pentile effect will be somewhat diminished and I read somewhere that samsung applied new pentile pixel technology in SAMOLED HD to improve sharpness.

That SIM slot next to SD slot might be for GSM capability, not LTE. I'm not sure if Moto already managed to make slim LTE device.

I certainly hope you're right. All the crap issues that come with pentile aren't worth it, IMO. It's the macroscopic effects like dropping fine image info, banding, etc that I don't like. No matter how good they make it, it's still a local area approximation of data for a particular 1:1 block of pixels. Real stripe FTW. Give me LITI.

Thought you might say that. Since when has Verizon given easy access to world roaming GSM SIM cards? They always bury them under the cover or battery with a pre-installed card and lock it to the phone because they never expect it to be removed by the typical user. Seems silly to make it easily accessible just like an SD card all of a sudden. My money is on an LTE SIM slot.

Valid point on GSM SIM card. But the same argument goes for LTE SIM card as well. They always put it under battery cover.

My point is mainly from thickness of phone. Moto spent more than half of this year to come out with pretty thick dual core LTE phone, Bionic. It's hard to believe they developed thin LTE phone along side it to release it just a few months later. I guess time will tell.

Maybe Nexus Prime is coming within this year really. I can only hope so...

Hate to be the party pooper (sorry, "buzzkill" to you young folks), but I STRONGLY doubt that Verizon is going to carry the Nexus Prime in October/November... if at all, ever. After all the hype they've put into the Bionic's imminent release, and with the much-anticipated SGS2 coming in September, I just can't see Verizon shooting themselves in the proverbial foot by cutting those sales short with a Prime launch just weeks later.

They're gonna want to milk the OG Droid base dry as much as they can with hot new devices right around NE2. The Bionic, SGS2 and iPhone 5 are quite enough to lock in about 80% of us Droiders. Offering up a phone like the Nexus Prime just a few weeks later would not bring in THAT much additional business, IMHO. It would be a waste. I could be wrong, have been before, but that's my 0.02 :)

EDIT: In contrast with my humble opinion, here's THIS:

So maybe, just maybe, I'll be blowing 2 upgrades in rapid succession after all

I'm pretty sure jinwons is on the right track. Pentile looks junky [to some users, your mileage may vary, yada yada] at current resolutions, but the benefits are real and the visual deficiencies diminish at higher resolutions.

A reasonable way to look at it is that Pentile has roughly the clarity of an RGB screen one generation of resolution behind. Current 960x540 qHD Pentiles are in the ballpark of 800x480 WVGA RGB, and the future 1280x720 HD Pentiles will probably correspond to a 960x540 qHD RGB -- and in both cases Pentile will consume considerably less battery power.

It's not that trivial. Pentile doesn't have the clarity of the previous gen resolution because it's not being driven at that resolution. It still has to approximate a standard pixel configuration to a non-standard configuration. I agree the pitfalls are less apparent with higher resolution pentile, but only where the object's actual size doesn't change (ie. OS text and icons kept in scale to display size). Finer detail will still appear deficient due to the pentile matrix. And, again, macroscopic issues are resolution independent and can only be solved by changing the pentile arrangement (though new artifiacts could crop up at the expense of eliminating others). Banding, for example, won't be cured by cranking up the resolution. You'll simply get finer banding.

Claims to be verifiable yet does not mention a word about where this magical information comes from. Seeing as the SGSII event is the 29th, I doubt we'll see it released on ATT on a Sunday before that.

With the lack of FCC or any kind of Verizon leak, My hopes have greatly diminished that we'll see this on Verizon any time soon. I want to kick all those "in-the-know analysts" in the balls for getting our hopes up that this would be on Verizon first.

Wow, August 28? That's crazy.

And it doesn't make much sense considering that Samsung's big announcement is the next day.

Regardless, I share your hope, although I'm thinking all Verizon's going to get is a crappy slider. I hope not, though.

I agree. Hoping to not have the slider as well.
