Help GPS Stopped Working

frank180

Lurker
Hello Everyone,
I've had my Incredible for about a year and have been pretty happy with it. Last night, the GPS suddenly stopped working. When I try to open it, all I get is Searching for GPS or Waiting for location depending on what my lovation settings are. I get the little icon but a never ending message.
I've tried to use it in different locations. It has always worked great.
I've read through several forums and searched the web and have not come up with anything specific to this phone or this problem.
Any help would be appreciated, and avoid getting a new phone.

Thanks

The GPS on my Droid Incredible stopped working about 2 days ago. The first symptom was intermittent GPS navigation coverage in areas that were normally flawless. The GPS pin point on Maps continued to struggle with displaying my location until finally it gave out. My location now shows me just south of France (a far cry from my true locale in Upstate NY).

With Occam's Razor in mind I started troubleshooting small: Settings -> de-selected and re-selected all three Location options. Activated and de-activated wi-fi. Checked for software upgrades. Removed the battery. Finally I gave up and did a hard reset on the phone which returned it to it's original factory settings.

No dice.

Google Maps Navigation keeps giving the same error: "No route found. We couldn't find a route to your destination" and shows "Searching for GPS..." regardless of the address I enter or where I am located.

Ideas?

I'm also having the same problem. But it has me located in Spain. That's a long ways away from Upstate NY. I really think it has some thing to do with Verizon updating to 4G. As soon as they turned it up in my area on Thursday. My GPS went nuts.

I posted this problem earlier today. I'm in Western NY and my GPS stopped yesterday. First I was in Norway and now I am in Laugna Spain. It seems that it is trying to locate me and will come back to my general neighborhood but I still get the message searching for GPS and the weather from Spain.

I also live in upstate new york, and have had the exact same problems with the same exact incorrect locations (spain, france). someone who knows WHY or how to FIX please respond. Also heard rumor about the solar flares? Any confirmation?

Same here in central ny state...
Theories:
Solar flare...no...my Magellan sees and locks to GPS satellites. phone does not ..tried different gps apps and no satellites in view is reported by apps
Tried a few verizon phones - none will lock to gps
Verizon network problem - have not checked any others with different carriers but assume verizon only problem
4g probably not as 4g is on all over with none of the problems unless items below relate
- strike - shortage of staff to find and address problem and fix?
-sabotage by striking union workers?

WHOA! You guys are having the exact same issue as me, and I too am in upstate NY (Rochester). I thought it must be my GPS hardware but I find it hard to believe that we would all be having the exact symptoms (location shown as somewhere in France) and be located in the same geographic area! What is going on here?

EDIT: I just talked to a Verizon tech support rep who said that they are getting calls about this issue. They stated that it is something wrong with the Android OS for certain phone manufacturers and that they (Verizon) contacted Google and Google is "looking into it".

No solution for you but I wanted to let you know this is happening to a bunch of us right now. See these posts: Link 1 Link 2

I notice from your profile that we are both in Rochester NY -- most of the others posting about this are in upstate NY locations as well. I think there may be something to this.

I'm also having no luck finding satellites yesterday and today, and I'm also in Western New York - North of Buffalo.

My husband's Garmin GPS watch had no problems accurately mapping our route yesterday though and my phone couldn't lock on a single satellite.

Any idea what the problem could be? Have our phones just forgotten what a satellite looks like?

I have an Incredible 2, by the way

I, too, live in upstate NY (Binghamton area) and the GPS is not working with both of our Verizon phones (Droid Incredible and DroidX). Was initially worried that it was just my Incredible, but it has affected both Android phones but has not affected my Garmin car GPS or iPad2.

Looking at these posts with most folks from upstate NY, I have trouble believing it to be a Google problem, otherwise it should affect everyone (?)

Hopefully they get this fixed soon. At least it seems to be a software only problem and not a hardware one. Was afraid I was going to have to spend money on a new phone.

ditto...Verizon in Rochester, NY...HTC Incredible...'Im apparently in Spain where it is currently 100 sunny degrees...GPS wont lock, etc, etc...my wifes droid 2 is working fine.

Well I don't know if I feel better or not about reading this, but at least now I don't think its just my phone. I'm also in upstate New York, Auburn area and I wanted to go out to day and do a little geocaching since I had some free time. Sure enough, i'm in France. <sigh> if only...

So now we know there is a problem, but I don't believe there is any solution. "google is looking into it" means they are ignoring it is my feeling.

Oddly, Google Maps pinpoints me to my house, but if I try to navigate, it won't find GPS.

No European location for me....

I'm having the exact same problem in Dutchess County, NY. Started yesterday (Friday) for me. I went to the Verizon store thinking I had a hardware problem and my 1 year warranty ends next week. They said there was an alert out and it was impacting Incredible and Droid phones with no estimate for a fix.

Rochester ny here and my Incredible has my location in France. It's been this way since Thursday. No gps connection for any apps. This is very annoying since I use cardio trainer everyday to track my running. I called Verizon today and the customer service rep said they didn't see any notices of the issue, which is very annoying. I suggest that everyone having the issue call *611 and let them know if you haven't already. I hope this is fixed soon.

From what I've read, google maps uses WiFi and cell tower for location so that will pinpoint you pretty close, but once you try and use a true GPS signal for navigation the problem pops up and the phone isn't reading any satellites. If I have standalone gps off, google maps will be close to my location but once I try and navigate somewhere it does nothing and will think I'm in France or Spain.

We're in Buffalo. My wife's Droid X and my Incredible are both having these GPS issues. My phone tells me I'm in Spain. Our Garmin works fine. And my Incredible worked fine in Maryland and North Carolina. Sigh.

In Rochester here as well, having the same problem. Met up with two other guys while out geocaching and they also had the problem. One of them stopped by the Verizon store and they are looking into it with google.

Hopefully soon ...

I was taking a break from trying to figure out what was wrong with the version of my 3.0 ROM I just finished. I even went back to my prior version then to the stock GB ROM with no luck. Pulling my hair out and beginning to think I fried something somehow.

The problem was my GPS would not acquire satellites and now I find this thread and feel a whole lot better

Albany, NY area

Google pushed an update to their Maps service and since the update on 8/16 many users may have been reporting the inability to use the Google Navigation. Once an address has been selected as a destination and the user attempts to navigate to the location, the phone indefinitely displays
