If you upgrade through the LG PC Suite or by taking your phone to an LG Service center, then you will not void the warranty.

If you root your device, then its warranty is voided. You need to root your phone to install custom firmware like many members on this forum have. Even so, there are ways to reinstall the original firmware to undo the root and to hide the fact that you ever rooted.

You can root your phone through Gingerbreak or (if you have not updated your phone) through z4root. Since Gingerbreak works for all versions and since I used gingerbreak, I'll explain the process through gingerbreak.

First, you need to download the latest version of gingerbreak which you can get from this link.

1. Make sure that USB Debugging is enabled in Settings>Applications>Development.
2. Make sure that you have a memory card formatted and inserted in your phone.
3. Install the gingerbreak apk.
4. Open the gingerbread app and select "root".
5. Wait for some time. Your phone should automatically reboot. This reboot should take longer than usual as phone cache is cleaned.

Once the phone has rebooted, go to menu and check if there is an app called superuser installed. It should be among the system apps. If there is, then you have successfully rooted your phone.

To undo the root, open gingerbreak. It will ask you for superuser rights, grant it. Now you will see that the option to unroot has become clickable. Select that to unroot your phone.

Optional: You can uninstall gingerbreak after you've rooted, you dont need it any more. If ever you feel like undoing the root, just install gingerbreak again.
