Stock "WHERE?" App killed battery in 4 hours.

I am quite surprised at this find. Got the Optimus and switched to it and VM just yesterday. Last night I opened "Where?" just to see what it was. And apparently it just never shut off. No wonder the GPS dish was in the notification bar all day.

It was plugged in all night, so it didn't drain then, but today... I heard the 5%-battery beeps at about noon, 4 hours and change off the charger. I go to see what could have sucked the battery away and it said 80% was WHERE?. So I went into it and "logged out" (whatever that means, since I never logged in) and then force stopped it from the application manager. It's plugged in again now, so hopefully that won't happen if I don't use that app again.

Is Poynt any good? Are there any great apps that do what these two are supposed to do?

Whenever you're done with an app, if you press the home button, the app still runs in the background. Make sure to fully exit, either by pressing the back button repeatedly or by choosing an exit option from the menu button.

Where and Poynt are both terrible. Listen, in general, if it's one of the stock applications that Virgin Mobile forced on your phone (which you can't uninstall), it's not going to be good. I'm pretty sure those apps' developers paid VM to have their apps required on the optimus v.

VMLive is crap... Poynt is crap... Where is crap... Twidroyd is crap in my opinion... AirGChat is crap... Even the stock VM "Downloads" bookmark is totally useless.

Just try to ignore them. Personally, it's driven me to the point that I really feel like rooting is necessary to free up the extra space and get rid of this bloatware.
 
Heh, you know, this is my 4th Android device and I should have known that about hitting home instead of backing out.

OK, I'll take where and poynt both off my screens and use something else like Layar or a straight google search if I need local "stuff".
 
Does backing out of a program with the back button really exit it? I didn't realize that. I thought the only way you can fully exit a program was if there's an explicit "Exit" choice or if you go into Application Settings and force closed it. Not sure though, so I'd be glad if backing out actually exits.

Depends how the app is written. Some do and some don't. Always look in the apps menu for an exit, and if it's not there then use the back button. If it's still running then you can force close it from the Settings - Applications - Manage Applications menu.

MOST programs do that. If they don't, then they've purposefully removed that, as I'm pretty sure it's default for developing a new app. Anyways, if there is a program that requires no additional data or constant activity, then there is no reason that backing out completely shouldn't close the program except for simple bad coding.

And, conversely, pressing the home button almost NEVER exits a program. At least I haven't found a single program that exits completely when the home button is pressed. It always runs in the background.

Personally, I always back out of my programs, and then I use Memory Booster and its built-in app killer to shut off anything that may have started itself every once in a while.

I actually do use Where and Poynt. They aren't the greatest apps of their kind, but they typically do what I want it to do. (I like Where's weather and traffic functions, and Poynt when I need to look up a number. I'm sure there's apps out there that do this kind of thing better, but I'm strapped for space, and they work for me, so I use them. There's also Places, but I think that's a Google thing, rather than something Virgin shoves down people's throats.

Twidroyd is awful, awful, awful. Bloated to all hell and it doesn't even work. AirGChat is really, really stupid (it's not really an app, but a link to some lame dating chat site). I don't see the point of SCVNGR so I avoid it. There's also a link to Virgin Mobile Radio, which I guess is OK if you like bubblegum pop and lots of hype.

For the preinstalled apps you don't use, remember to uninstall all updates (you can't uninstall completely unless you root) and be sure to uncheck the box in Market to prevent automatic updates.
