Official Release Date Rumor Thread

ok so i have a question, is ATT's return policy global or just for their corp stores? i bought an Infuse from best buy back in may and took that back. if i buy a GS2 from costco and decide i'd rather have the Prime (assuming they announce it'll come out in a reasonable timeframe on ATT), will i be able to return my GS2 to costco and have my upgrade reset again?

You can return to the store purchased and as long as it's within their respective return window and your upgrade will reset. I think an exchange will not reset the upgrade, so make sure you do a full return.

Get this I went to the same bestbuy that had oct 2nd as the release date had them pull up the screen and it had the 12th down. SMH I don't know what to make of it are there initial orders preordered? Is at&t only supplying there stores. I will stop by there Saturday to see if the phones arrived for a Sunday launch. I still say Sundays is a go.

I called my local Costco today (San Marcos, CA.) and asked if they would have the SGS2 on Sunday. The person said they don't have it yet and to call back on Saturday when they would know for sure.

I will be using an upgrade from another line (in our family group) to get the GS2, but will put the GS2 on my line. Is that something Best Buy or Costco can do or is it best to go to AT&T for that sort of thing?

I did this at Walmart, so I'm assuming you'll have the same luck; however, Walmart did not know they could do this so I called att cust care while in the Walmart store and they directed the Walmart employee. Call ahead if you want to be sure.

Both Best Buy and Costco can do it for you no problem. Costco will probably be quicker though. It always seems to take forever when I get a phone at Best Buy.

Ok so I decided to go to the at&t website and chat with one of the sales reps. and she said that "it will release October 3rd for $199.99 with a 2 yr contract." I guess we can see if she is right. Hopefully wrong cuz i would like it on the 2nd. She seemed confident and said she couldn't wait for it to come out.

Well why not return the phone within your 30 day window and reset your upgrade. Then re-do your upgrade for a new phone instead of just exchanging for a new phone within the 30 day period.

Deal with AT&T but buy wherever you want. Let Costco/Sams whatever do it the SIMPLEST way then go home and call AT&T to swap lines. A LOT less chance of screwup and is a LOT faster.

If BOTH lines already have a smartphone plan on them just swap sims. You don't really have to even call for the ESN change. I have used phones for years without changing the ESN with AT&T. If they don't you have to call.

Do as little as you can to confuse the dummies at the kiosks as they aren't trained on more than the basics. Just make your purchase and get the hell out of there as soon as you can!

Then I called 611 on my phone and the rep I talked to said definitely October 2nd. Let the misinformation campaign begin! :|

Funny thing. I called my local Costco today to see when they would be getting some stock on the SGSII. The guy I talked to at Costco said AT&T pushed the release to October 4th,

I think you are all making some good points here, though I haven't yet done all of the math that you have. However, I must correct one thing I do see as incorrect, or at least I beleive to be incorrect. As I mentioned in my earlier post on this subject, the cost of the Buy Back plan at my Best Buy is $60 (not $70), but if you purchase the Black Tie coverage at the same time ($10 per month), then the Buy Back plan only costs $30. Then, you can cancel the Black Tie coverage with 30 days and still have only paid $30 for the Buy Back plan. I realize this is nickels and dimes and perhaps it's still a big rip off, but I wanted to be accurate about these numbers.

Egads ... even a bigger rip-off, the "black tie" service (or any insurance). Add up EVERYTHING you "invest" the how much you might get. Deduct the investment in the insurance, the loss of the sales tax you paid and will pay again. You LOSE no matter what. These "polices" are responsible for 50% of the profit Best Buy makes.

You get 1 year from AT&T, if you pay with a credit card (Amex is the best) you get a second year. That's 2 years for free. Sure coverage isn't identical but you are protected for the basics. Put $15 in the bank each month and save it for 2 years. You will come out ahead.

Oct 12th is the release for the T-Mobile version, It's also going to retain the SAMSUNG GALAXY S II name, whereas Sprint changed theirs to Epic 4G Touch.... T-Mo verson has 1.5Ghz Dual core Snapdragon and the 4.52" screen... it runs on HSPA+ 42 where AT&T runs on HSPA+ 21. The BestBuy rep might've just looked up "Samsung Galaxy S II" and accidentally saw/quoted the T-Mo verson. ;)

MisterEd, can you give more details on the 1-2 year AT&T insurance??

ATT insurance with like a $9,000 deductible? .... fugetaboutit!

When you get a new phone it has a 1 year swap out warranty then your CC gives you another year of warranty. All free.

All electronics insurance is a waste of money. Use your Amex (or other CC) then you will have 2yrs at no cost. Put $15 in the bank each month, then you will have something in the end. Everyone is so brainwashed with this insurance on electronics that every financial website says is the worst money you can possibly spend.

Ok, so this sounds like the AT&T guy was blowing smoke up my you know what, but he told me south texas was probably not getting the galaxy s 2 in stores because they are more focused on rolling out LTE(since Texas is the primary state for LTE), which would mean the Hercules would be releasing in like a week or 2 if his logic is sound. They have not received a shipment yet. Tell me I don't have to drive up north a few hours just to get it on Sunday!

I tried to use an upgrade on another line at BB when I got my Captivate, and the sales guy refused - said only AT&T stores could do this. Maybe I should try Costco this time around since I'm pulling the same stunt again :D

And in my experience it takes FOREVER to buy a phone at both AT&T and BB.

I was in BB a few weeks ago, and someone was trying to do the same thing, one of the managers said that the only issue was with sprint, or maybe it was tmobile, where the upgraded line had to have that phone on it for 24 hours. Sounds like the dude you spoke with was a lazy bum ;)

BB did it for meback in November no problem. Of course it was the upgrade for my Wifes line and she was there with me, so that might be why? BB takes FOREVER it took over an hour to get the phone. When we upgraded my Wifexat Costco in April it took les than 15 minutes.

Of course I am going back to BB to get the SGS II on Sunday so I guess I just dont learn.

So, let me get this straight. I'll get my GS II on Sunday (hopefully) and if I accidentally drop my phone in the deep blue ocean next month (I've done this!), I shouldn't worry. I'll just call AT&T and tell them Mister Ed sent me ;)

I did recon today looking to see if the local AT&T stores got any phones in and if so how many.

AT&T store #1:
"The Galaxy S2 is coming out this Sunday? Are you sure? Where did you hear that?". He asked his manager who poked around on his computer. He found it and said he saw it listed for October 2nd and said they should get them "on or about" Oct 2nd. No warm fuzzy feeling here so I moved on.

AT&t STORE #2: They at least knew it was suppose to come out on Sunday. They hadn't received any yet, but said they often get new phones on either Thursday or the day before the release.

Best Buy: They are right near AT&T #2. They didn't have any in stock yet, but gladly took $50 to hold one for me. They open an hour earlier than AT&T so I will hit Best Buy at 10AM for my reserved one and can go to AT&T at 11AM if BB falls through.

The line I am upgrading on is a dumb phone (the in-laws on our plan) so they will have to do the cross upgrade (I think that is how the Best Buy person referred to it) as I want to keep the upgrade line at the basic $10/month fees.

I hear you about keeping it as simple as possible. I did buy a uSIM to SIM adapter so I can put the uSIM out of my iPhone4 into the standard size SIM in the GS2.
I'm not sure calling AT&T to finish up is always the best though. Last time I did that the AT&T rep told me she needed the IMEI # and I should pull the back off and look under the battery. This was on an iPhone 4....... the cluelessness was overwhelming.
