USB Tether

Tomorrow I will be an owner of a new X2. Currently I have an HTC Eris that is rooted and I sometimes use the USB tether.

Do you have to be rooted on the X2 to use the USB tether option or will I have to use PDAnet if it is not rooted?

No, you do not need to be rooted for USB tether. Wi-fi tether is an entirely different story however

What is USB tether? Whats its purpose?

It allows your laptop to access the internet through your phone. Comes in handy if your in an area where you do not have access to a wi-fi signal... just plug in your phone to your laptop (or connect via wirelessly but that typically requires root access), fire up your tether app and viola, internet access for your laptop.

Mind you, your running at 3G speed (or whatever your signal strength is wherever you happen to be at the time), which I have found sometimes isn't the fastest internet experience for say streaming movies, but it's usually at least good enough to check your email, stocks, weather, Android Forums...

I just purchased Mobile Hotspot, $20/mo via Verizon.

just plug in your phone to your laptop
What app is needed? Any settings on your phone that have to be activated/de-activated? Would I still need my Mobile Hotspot subscription?

Im kind of confused. If its that easy to connect to the net from your phone via USB, then why would people even need to purchase "Mobile Hotspot"? I feel dumb now if it is in fact that easy. I was under the impression you had to at least be rooted to use your phones internet in any way.
