Root Renaming Nandroid Back Ups

Hello, I hear people saying you can rename your backups so it's easier to find the one you want / Don't want.

But if I do this via windows I get a md5 checksum mismatch error.

How do I change the name without getting the error?
 
Rename them on the phone, using your favourite file manager.

That's an interesting point though: we'd seen some people having md5 errors after renaming, but I'd never encountered this myself, so at least for me it was a puzzle. But I've never used Windows to rename them - either the phone itself or my Macbook (which is also *nix based). Are you renaming them after copying to the computer, or over USB on the phone?
 
interesting, i renamed all my nandroids and they all failed, so ive not bothered since, hope to find the solution.
 
The others i have renamed didnt work if i put spaces in, remove the spaces and it seems alright.
 
Actually terminal not terminal emulator but I'll try it

adb shell
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/My backup name
rm nandroid.md5
md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
 
Yes it works in terminal emulator

Type:
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/backupname

And press enter (where backupname is what you renamed the backup to) this takes you to that directory

Type:
rm nandroid.md5

And press enter. This removes the current unworking Md5 file

Type:
md5sum *img > nandroid.md5

And press enter. This generates new Md5

Easy
 
Oh right I get you, tbh it seems easier to just not put spaces in. My non working backups have been removed now but i'll keep this in mind.
 
With script manager, you could store it as a script. Edit the backup name and the script would do the best
 
its just a list of terminal commands in a file.

download script manager:

Open it, and create a new directory for scripts (menu > new)
Create a new script in the same way.

Paste the 3 lines of command in under the first line of the scriot that is already there. save it.

Now you can run that from script manager or even paste a shortcut to run the script from your home screen.

All scripts are terminal commands. Youd just have to edit the script each time to include the name of the backup.
 
i did this put a space in MD5 error thought i had lost my pervious set up, i was not happy!

removed the space and hey presto...
 
hi all, very new to all this. Just rooted over the weekend using Revolutionary.io and gone from HTC Gingerbread RUU to Redux 1.2. Just to confirm:

1. can you rename the nandroid backup via Windows (with phone connected on USB) and as long as you don't put a space in the name the backup will work? Or can you only do it from the phone using say Astro File Manager, or put another way

2. is it the space in the filename that causes the Md5 error or where your do the renaming (in phone vs via computer) or both?

Seems to be just spaces that mess up the MD5
if you do get one that wont work, Dan has mentioned how to make a new MD5 checksum for just incase.
Because im nice, here is is.
