Root No space but there is a 2GB card inside..?

optimus v on VM. Now i can't get texts because of "low memory" im guessing a bunch of cached junk? this OS is so anal its ridiculous. i just got this yesterday but ive had experience with blackberries and iphone but i have not 'rooted' and not even sure what that is.

It even says there is over 1GB still free on the card so how can i get stuff to download there instead? why am i having "low space" messages AT ALL when i DO have space?!

There is internal storage space and there is SD card space. I must congratulate you on filling your internal space in just one day; that's quite an accomplishment.

Since you probably can't download anything from the market at this point, go through all of your apps, find the ones that can be moved to SD and move them. Also clear all the caches. Once you have some space, download a cache cleaner and whatever that app is that automatically moves apps that can be moved to SD (the one for unrooted phones; someone will know the exact name.) And now someone else will come along and tell you to root your phone...

haha thanks it was easy. Surprised Google+ takes up the most space.. anyway most of them are on the SD and it says about 16mb is left on my phone still. I have "App 2 SD" but I guess its not enough. I have Virgin Mobile and i don't want the void the warranty. :/

At some point, and I don't know exactly what it is, but you seem to have reached it, you can't get texts and such even if you have some internal space left. Clearing your caches should free up quite a bit of space, but you're probably going to have to bite the bullet and delete some apps that are not movable to SD, and delete some of your texts, too. I must be doing something wrong, since I've had this phone since Feb 1, unrooted, and have 130mb internal space and 1.54gb left on my card. And someone will still come along and tell you to root your phone...

Yeah, melim, you must be doing it wrong. lol. I filled up my internal storage in one day too. I have to pick and choose between which apps I keep and which I throw away due to the insanely small 140 MB on the internal memory of this phone. I'm really considering rooting now because I can't live with only ~125 apps on my phone. lol

17megs is the minimum space required to receive texts if memory serves me correctly.

The "anal" OS, like all other OSes requires at least some free space to perform functions. Try filling your hard drive 100% on your computer and see what hilarity ensues.

I have a lot of space wasted myself by having multiples of some apps (I have 3 or 4 browsers, 2 launchers) installed. Make sure you don't have any redundant apps, or look for multipurpose apps.

And now someone else will come along and tell you to root your phone...

That's an educated guess; you know me: minimalist all the way. But yeah, at the moment I only have about 30, 11 of which are on the card, and 3 or 4 of which I wonder why I keep. That's not to say I haven't tried a ton more at different times and gotten rid of them for various reasons, but usually if I get sick of a game, say, I'll find a new one I like and uninstall the one I'm sick of instead of keeping it. I also don't usually save texts for more than a week and obsessively clean my caches.

(Note for those who like to jump on me: ^That there? That's me describing what I do, not telling anyone what they should do. TYVM and have a nice day.)

It was driving me crazy too, the whole app shuffle. I went ahead and did the Gingerbreak (which does have an unroot function) to root the phone and the Link2SD (see the link in an earlier post) install. It has been without issue, I put everything except Handcent and Swiftkey and a couple of others on my SD. I don't know how many apps I have, probably 50+ and have 70mb free.

The phone is so much better this way! Idk about custom Rom's that's a whole other issue.

I did root my phone though. However, the only reason I rooted is because I would rather dig both my eyes out with a spork from KFC than see an advertisement on my phone. I hate ads. I loath them. Rooted, I can have the AdFree app and be a happy camper.

I'm Running the BACKside IHO-CM7 ROM and have 108 downloaded apps. My available apps space on my phone(without using Links2SD) is still129.35MB. The Reason for this is the ROM has an option To allow moving all applications to the sd card first. If an app behaves badly then I just move that one to the phone side. I only have 34 apps on the phone side(some, I just thought would function better on the phone side anyway).
Then there's the ability to customize the look and feel(overclocking and V6 Supercharger helped there as well)

If your rooted(rooting was the hardest part of the process) then installing a custom recovery and ROM is a piece of cake,Take it from some one who used to make all other "Nuub's" look like they had an overabundance of common sense and knowledge. This is not a process to be scarred of(rooting the phone is the one that is not for the faint of heart)

Also now that you are rooted and can delete something that can do untold irreparable damage to your phone, you need to install a custom recovery and make a complete backup of your system in that recovery(this is called a nandroid backup). This will allow you to totally restore your system back to normal in case you make a mistake like I did with my first "V" which is now a paper weight awaiting teardown for parts in the future(no one told me I needed a backup once I was rooted).

The next step past the recovery is flashing a ROM which is the easiest part of them all. So the Question would have to be: why not go for it and install a Gingerbread ROM that makes LG+Virgin Mobiles update pale in comparison(Have you seen the reviews on the LG+Sprint update),I would not hold your breath waiting for that to happen either. This is a pay as you go phone. They can't make any money upgrading this phone. They can make money by offering a phone with a Gingerbread version that will cause people to buy a new phone to upgrade. Think about it,this is Virgin Mobile were talking about here. Update to a Gingerbread version,not very likely. Virgin Mobile is not Sprint

Yeah, ads...I wrestled with that for a while because I hate them with a passion as well, but back in the dark ages of constant 3G drops, I found they serve a useful purpose- if I opened an app with ads and they didn't load, I'd know the 3G was out. And I now just disable the data connection if I'm playing a game or whatever so I don't have to see them. Of course they are still an issue while browsing, but I've learned to ignore them, amazingly. If I were ever to root, though, it would be for that very reason.

^spoken like a champ^ i have had my phone for quite some time now, and a few other android devices, and have NEVER filled up internal storage. i currently have 24megs of internal and im about to go insane on the apps2sd shiz. stop downloading bloatware maybe?

I accidentally unlinked all off my link2sd apps today, this filled my phone to 99.9% full, so full in fact every app would crash on open. I had to boot and hope I was able to get enough space cleared so I could uninstall something.

I wish Google would add an uninstall feature on the Market website for your installed apps that you can access from your PC browser. AppBrain has that feature, but their app pissed me off so I uninstalled it.

and this is the part where i do the finger pointing to myself, just for laughs..
at first i too was skeptical about rooting my phone, but what made me want to do it was, overclocking, customization(cause i just LOVE mods, tweaks, personalization and making mine, truely mine), better space management, and i got tired of seeing all the apps that i wanted saying *ROOT REQUIRED*. and rooting my phone was the best "mistake" i ever did. this phone is what, $150-$200?? and rooting it and doing all these system "tweaks", made it seem like its worth around $250-$400? it performs better, its updated to the Latest Gingerbread OS out there, and the battery life.. OH THE BATTERY LIFE!!!.. Its AMAZING! waaaay better than what you can get on the Stock Froyo 2.2. and NO bloatware that will damage my phone and hender it from working at its FULL potential. so yea, rooting is a wonderful mistake, afterall, it only voids your warranty.. and what kind of warranty do you get with Virgin Mobile? a warranty to garuntee that your phone will pale in comparison with most low end android phones. (points fingers at self)
