noob question - deleting things from SD card

How do you access the SD card to delete files? I cannot work it out. I have some old excel files I want to delete.

Install a file manager like 'EStrongs File Explorer' and use it for exploring your SD card and deleting this file

Search mit EStrongs for ".xls"

Ok, without an other app

Use your PC's Windows Windows Explorer for the task.
For that, set the phone's USB settings* to "Disk drive" and connect the phone to the PC via USB cable.

*=Phone's Settings "Connect to PC"

EDIT: For to disconnect don't forget on PC to unmount the phone like an USB stick
