Help Internal Memory (16GB) Question(s)

Lurker
I have a Captivate coming from AT&T. I trading in the Samsung Focus Windows 7 Phone for it. (The focus SUX when it comes to apps) As for the Captivate, specs say 16 gigs of internal storage, however, I have read in a few places online that there's only about 1.6 - 1.7 GB free out of 16 gigs when the phone arrives from AT&T. What in the name of God is taking up 14+ gigs in this phone!? I do plan on putting a 16 or 32GB MicroSD in it, but 14 gigs in use right off the bat don't sound right to me. Does Anyone have any light to be shed on this?

I think some get system storage confused with the internal SD. Stock, both our captivates had about 14.5 available for the internal. Nothing to be worried about.

Correct. Their is Internal phone storage that has about 1.5GB of usable space, then the internal memory card that has about 13GB available. Then you can buy your choice of External cards.

I've had one Android phone in the past, and I think we're all aware that not all apps can be moved over to the SD card, and must stay put on the phone's internal memory. Could someone lay this out for me? how much space is actually internal, i.e. for apps that can't be moved with app2SD, and how much space is avail. to store apps that CAN be moved, NOT counting the option of an added MicroSD, which I plan on adding either a 16 or 32GB. Thanks to everyone for their help. :)

I don't know the whole physics of it, but I assure you it will not be a problem for you. It says 16GB for a reason, there is no trickery, and you won't wind up with 1.6GB instead.

I've had my Captivate for almost a year, I have over 80 apps on it, and all my music. None of it is moved with app2SD. Its all on the phone itself.

what he said.

The 1.5ish for the system is pretty much whats reserved for the OS and all. The remaining is around 14.x gigs. App wise, you wont come close to filling it. apps are small. You really would have to store a lot of music, pics and videos to fill it up. I use pandora and google music for my music, so not much is stored on my phone. My pics are uploaded to picasa so minimal amount is stored. Videos, not many, I tend to upload those somewhere quickly.

In a nutshell, a average captivate user would not even need an external. The only reason I use my external is for backups and keeping my custom ROM stuff on it in case I eff it up and need to reload my ROM :)

You will be fine.
