Help Android Newbie Questions Coming from Blackberry

Hi everyone. I'm a recent Android / Galaxy SII convert coming from a Blackberry, which I used for years. I love the device and Android, but I have a couple of questions and was hoping I could get some help. I hope you won't find my Blackberry references irritating, as I am still transitioning to Android.

1. Contacts - I am a Mac user and I used to have BB Desktop Manager to sync all my contacts between my mac and my BB. I tried doing it with Kies but find it very cumbersome and error prone. I've searched around, but cant seem to nail down the best method to sync contacts between the two devices. What's the best way?

2. Contacts - I insist on maintaining my contact list on the phone memory (meaning by default all new entries are also set to be saved on the phone). However, if I just transfer everything to my Google account and use that instead, is Android actually using your phone book from the Internet and therefore your contact list is using up data?

3. Network Mode- On my previous BB devices, I could switch between 3G/2G, 3G only, or 2G only modes. I used to switch to 2G only to preserve battery life. How do I do that on this phone?

4. Backing Up - Is there a straightforward way to backup your entire phone to your computer? Let's say for example, I completely wipe my phone out (like after an OS update) and revert to the previous settings, address book, etc etc- any way on this phone?

5. Videos - I was able to mount the SD card of the phone on my Mac and transfer some videos in a folder. When I go to the Videos application, I can view and play the videos but I can't seem to find a way to delete them, did I just miss it?

6. Phone- I was in a call earlier and had the call on speaker phone. There were several sub options while on the call, but I couldn't find an option to go back to the home screen to access another application, for instance, calendar or memo, to take notes. Pressing the menu or center button didn't give me an option. How do I do this?

Hope someone can help me all the questions, thanks in advance!

about 3: go to settings\ Wireless and network\ mobile networks\ network mode
im not sure which is 2g and which is 3g though..

about 6: use the home button - the one below the screen, you can do whatever you want while on a call.

1. Contacts - Try syncing using Google contacts.

2.Contacts - After the first sync of contacts turn off the automatic sync, all your contacts will be saved on phone memory.

4. Backing Up - Use Kies software. It has an option to backup/restore your phone.

5. Videos - You cant delete a video in the Videos app. You either do it in Gallery or through file manager.

1. do not use kies for anything, its rubbish :D like mentioned already, use gmail to sync ur contacts.. or hotmail or any other email account, it has the ability to sync contacts from these accounts

2/3. already answered fine

4. do NOT use kies to backup. like i said, do not use kies for anything. it backs up great but it gives u loads of problems when trying to restore. to be honest, there's no great app for android that backsup like itunes, unless ur rooted. so basically, ur contacts are backed up on gmail, so u can use one of the non-root apps for backing up apps. android backup service (settings/privacy) does a good job, i hear, of backing up apps and settings. astro file manager now also includes a good app backup agent. try some of these. however, if u want a complete backup of everything, includign settings/app data, etc, ur gonna want to root

5. in gallery, press and hold the video til the checkbox appears, and press delete :)

6. thats strange. i just tested to doublecheck, i just press the home button (centre button) when im on a call, and i get taken to the homescreen.. and i can open any app after that.. even when on speaker.. maybe u could try again?

wow, i didn't notice the videos were actually in the gallery until it was pointed out here. i agree that kies is not reliable. i tried putting my entire iTunes playlist on my sg2 and it had so many glitches. i ended up just dragging all the music files into the phone's internal memory card but for some reason there were still some missing files.

use itunes agent (free) or isyncr (not free) to sync ur itunes with ur SGS2. isyncr is better i think, it keeps track of playlists etc, if u wanna sync playlists too. i use itunes agent, wat u do is, u create a playlist that contains ur entire library, and itunes agent dumps the entire thing into ur phone. and any new songs u add, u just need to sync it.. no playlist sync though, but it works great. and any artwork/title/album info works great with any android music player.. as long as ur music is in mp3 format. other formats play fine, but have issues with the artwork/title info showing

not sure about ur second question regarding when ur phone was made
