I've only really frozen apps, BUT, now that CWM Recovery is functional for doing backsups (Hash of Codes), I'm going get get brave enough to delete files.... I may just wait a little longer for something beyond version .87. But technically we are clear for take off on actually deleting files since we can now do Nandroid Backups (aka full backups of rooted OEM states).

Keep in mind Freezing apps, only locks them down from being turned on (similar to renaming the filename.apk to filename.bak, android OS doesn't recognize the file as something that can be turned on or started up) so technically file space shouldn't really be affected by freezing.

My System Rom free space is: 1.61MB free (I used the latest leak updated, im not on OEM state)

IzelTokatl actually i been getting 225 lately i froze alot of little things lately and the phone freeze but i restart and it works again , so i been doing good so far, i dnt wanna remove anything , because im new to all this i dnt know how to use roms and stuff , i was reading, stuff for the droid x for my girls phone and i just got confused lol , but you guys are cool when need help so i will be buggin yall if i mess up :)

You deleted something you weren't supposed to. Try downloading GO Contacts and see if it works. If not if you made a Nandroid backup restore that.

Did you freeze apps or delete them? It most likely has to deal with the two Yahoo contact related apps. They should be available somewhere on here, or the rest of the net, where a full apk dump is available.

Here's what I've frozen.
Kindle
Apps (VCast)
Backup Assisstant
BA Client
Blockbuster
Citrix
CityID
GoToMeeting
Guided Tours
Home Screen Tips
IM
IM Presence
LastFM Authenticator

VCAST Media
VCAST Music
VCAST Tones

WARNING
Freezing Yahoo Contacts and Yahoo Mail Authenticator causes my contacts to FC.

Froze these exact apps and got more than 50 hours of regular use.

Thanks!

Honestly not a big deal, just start unfreezing apps, then reboot. Freeze in sets so you know what stops working after a boot.

you either deleted or froze:

blur_yahoo.apk
blur_yahoo.odex
YahooContacts.apk
YahooContacts.odex

If you defrost these apps and reboot, you will be all set. If you deleted them and don't have the files available, you will have to download a system/app dump and copy them back to the app folder with root explorer, then set the permissions and ownership to the same values as the rest of the apps in the system/app folder. there are threads dedicated to this issue here and at XDA

Has anyone complied a new freeze list for use after the OTA update?

I notice that some APPS from the original list are different or missing altogether.....

It is also a good idea NOT to delete the APK files...

If you dont use an application such as Titanium backup to freeze the apk files, you can use Root Explorer.

  1. Create a sub folder (I created it under /system/app/old)
  2. turn on multi-select
  3. Select all the APK files you want to remove (/system/app)
  4. Click Move
  5. Browse to the folder you created
  6. Click Paste.
***Note: You will get a repeated crash message on DLNA and VSuiteApp (if you moved them). You will have to reboot.

I did exacly this, I created a new folder in /system/app and called it OLD...moved all the stuff i didnt want to that folder, but all those apps are still in my app drawer. Do i need to move the OLD folder out of /system/app ??

thanks in advance!!
PS: This is my first post hahah

K here are a few things you may have to do:

- Reboot to clear the cache(doubt it, i think it only caches home screen not app drawer)
- Make sure you moved and didn't copy(Sounds dumb but it happens)
- And I am not sure about the odex's, you should look into that because you may have to move those to

But anyway if I were you I think you would be better off using Antek App Manager to freeze the apps... I have it and it works great, and its completely free. Only downside is it doesn't do batch... But Titanium Backup Free is still good for that!

hi, im new here, and just rooted for the first time. pretty sure everything is right,i obtained root explorer, but idk how to work it, im unable to move my apps, (or idk how) and was wondering if i really need to obtain titanium.
Also, after root i really dont see any difference at all, so i wanna know, what next?
Any input is appreciated. ty! :)

You just have to touch at button on the top "Mount R/O", when you "click" there it will change to "Mount R/W" and you'll be able to move our apps!

But here is what I suggest.

First get a Nandroid backup and that means you need the DROID 3 Bootstrapper. See the forum header entry for the links.

Second, get Titanium Bkup and FREEZE the apps you don't want to run. Don't mess around moving apps to the SD card (really media storage, because that causes problems with market updates) and don't delete the apps because you might discover too late that one you deleted was really needed. Who would think that Corporate Sync Authenticator would be involved with contacts storage, but apparently it is. When I froze it, I could not display any contacts! Glad I didn't delete it. What you freeze depends on what you use and can do without.

Third, you can get rid of adds with ADFREE. You might also want ROM Manger, but that's up to you. I purchased it on my D1 and the lic is still good for the D3.

I have not ventured into any custom ROMs, but only because the D3 is running so smoothly as it is...

Is it safe to remove Backup Assistant and/or Client? By safe I mean will I loose all my existing contacts if I do?

If I look around settings on my D3, I see that the Phone's own contact list seems to be "owned" by Backup Assistant. Just to be complete, I see that Google's contacts are owned by my google account, and the Preset contacts are owned by Version Wireless.

I don't use Backup Assistant and never initialized it. So, I would like to stop it and its service from running. But not if it means I will loose all my contacts.

You cannot remove backup assistant, I would recommend just flashing this rom...
[ROM] Droid 3 Deodexed - RootzWiki

It will give you stock system deodexed and debloated, and it removes everything that is safe to remove. If you don't have your heart set on stock, you should check out some other roms that give a better experience.

I have frozen Backup Assistant and Backup Assistant Client with no ill effects. I still have all my contacts and I can access and manipulate them.

However, freezing Corporate Sync Authenticator caused the Contacts APP to FC whenever I tried to open a contact.

I deleted a couple apps and now whenever i open up text messaging, i get a force close. If i use handcent, sending out messages is fine. Receiving them, i get a force close from the original text message app. The only apps i deleted( yes im stupid for not freezing) that have anything to do with texts are...

Social Status 2.3.4
Social Networking 2.3.4
Social Messaging 2.3.4
Social Location
QuickSMS 2.3.4
IM Presence

Could any of these be my problem? When i try to restore these, It just sits at restoring... And does nothing. Any help would be great

I wanna say QuickSMS is your problem there. Download a D3 system dump and move over the .apks you deleted back into your /system/app folder and install them. Then freeze first, delete later. ;)

Once you have your D3 rooted, then I suggest paying the $ for Titanium Backup Pro. Besides getting a terrific backup system, you can also "freeze" apps you don't want to run. They are not removed, but they don't slow down your phone. Fortunately the D3 has a big program storage area (2GB) so you don't need to worry about running out of space. I also advise against moving ANY PROGRAM to the Media Area (aka SDCARD) since that seemed to cause bogus problems during updates.

On my phone there are 298 active applications plus 66 frozen ones. The phone runs well and only about half the internal storage is used.

The best part is that you can freeze an app you don't want to run and then see what effect it has on the ones you do want to run. If you have unexpected problems, you can unfreeze the app easily.

You preserve your options, and I have not seen any downside to this approach.

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
