Root [CDMA] Phone updated itself!

SamuraiBigEd

Under paid Sasquatch!
I woke my phone earlier this evening to a "Your system has been updated" screen, thing is I never saw or accepted an update. Has anybody else had this happen?

I still have S-Off and my recovery is intact, can't see where any damage was done, but still this is a little unsettling.

First, rooted and running:
CleanROM 2.2
Build: 2.08.651.2 CL130920 release-keys
HBoot v1.4

So I've been away from the scene for a bit. Got a baby almost here.

Tonight, the phone's was sitting by itself for a couple of hours and I pick it up to find a black screen that says:
"Service Update
The update is complete and changes will now be applied"
with an "OK" button to be pressed

Holy crap! I must've left some auto update setting incorrectly set, most unlike me, but not impossible apparently.

Now if I press the 'home' button, I can jump to the home screen and do stuff. But only for around 15sec or so, after which the black screen comes back.

So now what? I've half a mind to:
- pull the battery
- try to jump into recovery
- wipe everything
- load into some old nandroid

But before I move to such drastic measures, I thought I'd check with you guys.

Wha'da'ya think?

I just started a similar thread.

I've not pressed ok, yet though. Waitin to see what folks say.

So you've not noticed any troubles, huh?

You're still rooted and with Hboot v1.4?

Hboot-1.40.1100
Radio-0.97.10.0530
S-OFF

No problems yet, we will have to wait and see.

I would just go ahead and post here since I have already started a thread on the subject. I would really like to get to the bottom of this.

paully, I already responded in my thread but I am having no problems after hitting OK. I am at HBOOT v1.40.1100, Build number 1.13.651.7 CL83920 release-keys, Kernel v2.6.35.10-gcb1cf83 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1, Android 2.3.3.

I don't think there is anything you could do at this point short of an RUU if you don't want to accept it.

yeah this happened to me earlier D:! i haven't noticed anything different tho (seeing as how i later on did service update outta curiosity.) i was walking nd texting when my phone decided to try to service update by itself, but i pressed the back button by impulse and it stopped O_O! lol
btw im running eterninty rom 1.4.2 with stock kernel. in case that helps anything

btw i should add that i have both the proxy settings cleared out and the vocoder set to EVRC-B and both are still the same as what i have them set :)

This happened to me while I was asleep. I just woke up and found that an update was downloaded without my permission, and was waiting to be applied.

My concern is that apparently the phone settings don't matter. Sprint can still force an update, which is bad... Looks like our experts here have another little challenge...Find the hidden code that lets the system force an update even with the settings off.

Yep it got me too... I was playing a game and when I exited the message was there that the update was applied successfully.

Maybe it would help to give details about your phone in this thread.

Rooted with revolutionary running synergy.

Lol, so I'm glad to know I'm not crazy, or at least no more so than I was before. Like some of you, I woke up my phone just a few minutes ago and had the same window and message and being half asleep thought, "What did I update!?" I immediately checked and still have root which is a relief but I don't like the idea that an update can just be forced on you. Generally, or at least in past experience, you may get prompted for a Sprint update but you have the option to decline.

Rooted with Revolutionary, Android 2.3.4, hboot1.4, CleanROM_2.7.

Google can force updates onto your phone, but they usually do it silently.

Disable updater.apk and you should be safe from it updating your system. I use DroidWall and denied it internet access, which is basically the same thing. I have not received this message.

Yes, at least according to the message it was already a done deal.

hrmmm.... well. I still have the black "press OK" screen. (same condition as my OG post, #2 above, haven't done anything yet.)

I've read through the above mentioned xda thread, nothing useful to the start of page 4.

I just called sprint, she said that it is a "security fix" and will update the build number to
2.08.651.3 from 2.08.651.2. She had no further info available.

I've some ignorance here. I don't know what the "Build number" actually represents.

Another curiosity, SamuraiBigEd has a completely different build numbering scheme it seems, neither 2.08.651.3 nor 2.08.651.2

Has anyone confirmed what exactly this update has done to their phones?

i got the update and still have 2.08.651.3, but do not remember my baseband version. I am guessing this has something to do with the wimax issue treve found

The problem is companies are not allowed to force updates, Microsoft got in BIG trouble with the fed's over it a few years back. Any and all updates are the decision of the user.

As far as my build number, maybe it is because I never accepted any updates and mine was a pre-release date phone.

Did anybody else see "System Updated"? I see others reporting "Service", maybe my sleep deprived brain saw it wrong.

On edit: Hopefully it is a fix for the horrible crossed line issues we have been having!

I think updating your profile also applies this fix. I just did a manual profile fix and it said an update was applied. So /shrug.

Fresh 4.0.3 donators release tiamat 1.1.0

got update last night about 6pm in Georgia

avg speed test results 3 tests

1.3 mbps down

685 kbps up
at 2:10 pm

I am assuming I got it also, running Cleanrom 2.4 and early this morning I saw my screen was on the Sprint slash screen, so I did not know what had happened, I assumed it rebooted and got stuck on the splash screen, so I decided to pull the battery when I did see and it reboot with no issues, so not sure what this was all about, but I definitely don't like the fact they have access to your phones even though we are rooted.

it seems to be nothing more than a forced profile or prl update. I have no changes to my phone at all
