I'm running checkROM v2.0 right now with the DK kernel. What are the advantages of the speedmod kernel? Worth the flash?

Since they are both free and available... give them both a try and see for yourself.

So, when I see postings that say, "what's the best kernel" (or indeed, the best ROM) the simple answer is... whatever suits you best I guess.

Battery calibration is to reset your battery counter, usually after a ROM flash.

In the case of the SGSII, I, and others, have found this to be the most reliable method of calibration:-

Most people love siyah. I got lag with all versions, speed mod works for me very well, very snappy. But no bln, uv, or oc.

As iron ass says try em both, don't always assume you'll get the same experience as everyone else.
