Help Boots automatically when charger is inserted

Maybe this is by design, but if so, it is a dumb design.

So I get home and my phone is down to 42%, and a brand new battery that I ordered from eBay ($23.98 with shipping) has arrived and I want to charge them both up. So to speed up the charging process I decide to power down the phone so all the current from the charger will go to the battery. Powering down the phone works OK, but as soon as I plug in the wall charger it boots back up. I tried it over and over and as soon as I plug in the wall charger it boots up again.

My old phone (MyTouch 3G) did not behave this way. When it was off it stayed off until I pressed the power button, with or without the charger plugged in. And it would charge much faster if the phone was off.

Is this a feature of Touchwiz that I am supposed to be grateful for?

It sounds like you have a problem. I turn off my phone every night in order to charge it. This also avoids cycling issues. When it is powered off, it remains off. The only thing you should see is the battery level and charge animation, then the screen turns off. Pressing the power button quickly will show the charging icon only, then the screen will time out.

If your phone boots back into Android then that is not correct. Does it do that with the original battery in it? If so, then I would go exchange my phone if I were you.

It does it with the original battery and the second battery that I bought (genuine Samsung OEM).

I keep wondering if there is a setting somewhere that is causing this behavior on my phone. I've looked everywhere I can think of and I can't find anything. But that doesn't mean I haven't missed it.

So far you are the only one who has responded. It would be good to have additional input. Maybe I am not the only one.

You are not alone, my new AT&T GS2 does the very same thing. Turned off phone at night to plug into AC charger and the next morning the phone was on! Next night I once again turned it off and plugged it in to charge and after a short while the phone booted up by itself. This in not killer but I'd rather not have it do this. My T-Mobile GS2 doesn't do this and my US Cellular Galaxy S doesn't do this. Setting maybe that can be changed?

Thanks for confirming. So your SGS2 and mine reboot when the charger is plugged in, but Xerses' SGS2 does not. This could be hardware, but it sounds more like a setting issue. Or perhaps an app that we installed has changed something to cause this.

I wonder if it is related to the issue where the battery level indicator sticks at 100%. This has been discussed in this thread:

I don't have the stuck on 100% battery problem, all of my devices are rooted and I actually get really good battery life on my AT&T SGS2 overclocked to even 1.452GHz but the restart when plugged in to charge when originally shut off I would rather not have. Even not overclocked it does this so that's not the problem. I'm hoping it's something simple setting but haven't found it yet. Like I said my TM SGS2 doesn't have this problem. If you figure it out please share.

I didn't realize there was a thread about this. I have this problem and I almost sent the phone in for repairs. When my battery died, I plugged the phone to the outlet, and it tried turning on the phone. But since my batter was so dead, it would shut off, and the phone would force it to turn on again. This turned into a vicious loop that made me think something was horribly wrong.

When I plug the phone to computer USB port, the recharge screen comes up and the phone doesn't try to force itself on.

What is "cycling issue"?

Battery cycles are one way of measuring the life of a battery. To learn more about calendar life and cycle life read www.mpoweruk.com/life.htm

When the phone is on and plugged into a power source the phone reminds to you unplug it when full because the power will continually move from full to 98%, back to full (or close). These are essentially charge cycles that can and will eventually reduce the useful life span of the battery.

I am not saying that you will kill your battery if you do, or have done this for a little while, but doing it every day will eventually reduce overall preformance and length of useful power versus a battery that was cycled normally (from full to low, turned off and fully charged).

This is simply some friendly information, do with it what you will.
