Thanks for such a comprehensive comparison. Have you tried WordUp? It's as close to Boggle they come, with a nice interface. The developer is continuing to add words to the dictionary, which is a good thing since it's a bit deficient in that department, but it's definitely worth the download. Good fun.
 
I highly recommend Note Everything. It takes all your palm memos and puts them into the new program in a second. I had hundreds of them. The developer is very good about getting back to you by email with questions. Lot of updates also.

Excellent, thanks! That covers one thing I've been jonesing for.

Haven't spent much time recently on the lists or notes search. I had multi apps downloaded and went into overload for a bit. Nothing was quite right, so I thought I'd watch and wait.

Have you looked at Calendar Pad? I loved DateBk5, too, but Calendar Pad has selectable font sizes which allows you to see your appointments -- several characters, at least -- in month view, and the week view is very readable. All in all, I actually like this better than DateBk.

You might also check out the Pure Calendar widget. It's highly configurable, and very useful. A must have, as far as I'm concerned.
 
i don't know if someone already mentioned it (didn't read the whole thread), but for mixing drinks i think "Bartender" is a good solution, it has tons of drinks with "recipes" and you can also just search for some based on ingredients you have available.
 
i'm also a former palm fan (palmIII, palmTX).

for notes, i have decided to try Gdocs. it doesn't have crypt options and no folders but i like i can sync with google documents

for calendar, thanks to the people who recommended Calendar Pad (same small annoyance as other nexus one users - but hopefully the developer will solve that soon)

for passwords and sensitive data, i'd like to recommend KeePassDroid - the application can use the same databases as the linux (KeepassX) and windows ( KeePass Password Safe ) applications (but you have to keep in sync somehow the database).

I'm intrigued...is Calendar Pad a full calendar app, allowing entering new appointments, setting up repeat options, etc., or just a widget for displaying your calendar?

Thanks--I'm still using my Sony Clie TJ-37, and am not wanting to make the switch until it will be a real improvement. And the calendar is what I use the most.

Have you installed and played with it? Its a front end that will use the native calendar app for new events, which syncs w/ gCal events. In settings - check box for native day - and it displays native agenda view.

I don;t think many palm users think that there is a android PIM that compares. I was using palm 4.1 and got to like gCal especially since you can add to gCal from Jott, Note Everything, etal. Previously but had issue with keeping stuff in sync between gCal (desktop) and palm cal - now everything is in gCal and auto synced between droid and desktop.

What will you use to replicate the memo function? That's seems to be the biggest issue.

On desktop gCal theres a special other calendars named:contact birthdays which will add/merge with your displayed calendar of any BD in your contacts.

For non-private memos, I'm using gDocs which syncs (manually) with Google Docs. The only current shortcomings that bothers me (slightly) is that bi-directional sync isn't automatic, and downloaded documents aren't stored in categories.

For private memos, I'm using SplashID for Android which has Android and PC components. They sync bidirectionally over wifi. Data is encrypted and can only be accessed via password. I've found this to actually be better than the private memos on Palm.
 
You'd just think in this day and age with Palm, Outlook, BB and the various contact managers like Pocket Informant, Agendus and such, that Google could've produced a good contact manager instead of caving to the lowest denominator and caring more about social integration.
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE EPITAPH ON ANDROID'S TOMBSTONE!
This has been my biggest gripe since I first bought my Eris. I STILL can't believe that Google/Android came up with the WORST PIM on the planet, and Iambic, et al have not produced a PIM product for the fastest growing platform around! And why haven't the indy app makers jumped in to fill the void? The only company that has recently expressed interest is KOXX (Pure Calendar) and he's planning to start development in two weeks.

Why are there virtually no apps that integrate from a contact into the calendar? Why can't an event be associated with a specific contact? Take a look at Agendus for Palm and see what a good PIM can do. They might have had their bugs but it was a super powerful PIM.
There are 200 "to do" apps that don't associate to a contact. 200 "memo/note" apps that don't associate with a contact and not a single agenda app that associates with contacts?!

I don't care if an app costs 99cents. I'd pay $50 for Agendus to come to Android or any other developer who can produce an all-in-one app that does the job.

All of these a la carte apps may be fine for the casual user but there is a serious need for some serious applications.
 
that's why I went to the Pixi. If I'm giving up some of the PIM functionality, I'm going to do it with Palm who's homebrew community is much better than Android's since they are doing quite a few things to patch the OS with increased functionality. Would rather rely on a patched OS than 3rd party programs to increase the functionality of my phone.

Outside of losing instant info via widgets and screen size, I've gained in form factor, overall size, a keyboard that's light years better than anything on Android, and a much more polished OS. Plus I can seamlessly stream Pandora and Slacker. Not looking back, but I am holding on to my Moment and will continue to follow the progress of Android. Maybe I'll come back, but I highly doubt I'd go to another big brick phone with a slider. I wouldn't mind seeing an android phone with the Pixi form factor and a slightly larger 16x9 screen.
 
I'll keep my Eris as I like its features but the PIM is killing me. Mostly, I'm putting stock in the hope that developers are still just a little behind due to the nascent OS, whereas Palm has been around for over a decade. Just getting impatient...

Open Intents' OI Safe provides facilities to encrypt records, and once you've authenticated yourself to it, any application that uses it will be able to automagically decrypt and display them. The catch, of course, is that applications have to use those hooks if they're available. The list is pretty short; OI Notepad, Obscura and MyBackup Pro use it.

But there's no reason you can't badger your favorite app developers about it and maybe bribe them with donations.

Okay, i almost don't know where to begin now that I have made the jump..... I have written on another forum about my Palm to Android experience as I too am trying to make the switch.

I have always known that if it sounds too good it must have strings attached. Well, after taking advantage of Verizon's FREE Droid ERIS this past weekend, I am distraught. The ONLY reason that i am even remotely looking for a different phone is because I have "damaged" my Palm 700P. Dropped well too many times and lost the antenna screw about 8 days ago, I figured I might as well see what else may be out there. Particularly since Palm has dropped the ball on this Palm Pre. It was so bad that i was tempted to use a Blackberry.

The Droid Eris, and what seems to be all the Android based phones, caters more toward the "young-minded" adult rather than the "grown" adult. People more into Tweeting, looking at their Facebook, texting, and just "geeking" around. It does make business since, considering they are the ones that spend the money frivolously. Heck, when the phone does a reboot it displays a "droid" on a skateboard......go figure........ROFL

On the ERIS, the difficulty using the keyboard is an understatement, it's darn near impossible to type without typos while walking...... LOL Heck I have to install a program to kill running programs that won't close themselves? Its amazing how marketing will get some people to buy anything, thank goodness this is FREE.....LOL

The more that i dig into this phone the more issues i seem to find. Things such as....

1) The inability to privatize individual contacts from prying eyes. I know many celebrities & popular in-the-public people and it is my duty to keep their contact information protected. Even the way the contacts are displayed is sort of sad.

2) The lack of a standalone PC/MAC address book/calendar app to sync with like the palm desktop. I really do not like using Outlook for contacts and calendar items.

3) What about important docs that you need to secure. Yes, one could use BioWallet but you need syncing capabilities so changes that are made on the phone can be synced to your computer.

4) Where is the media sync? Or am I really missing something here? If I take a picture on my phone why can't i just press a "sync" button and have them installed on my computer also?

I am truly amazed how many people place their "life" online.......

So far i've installed the following in hopes of making this work.......

I've had this phone for 3 days now, and after researching the internet to find apps that will provide the security, convenience, and ease of use of the Palm and its apps, I'm about to sell this thing. I wish Palm would pull their heads out and produce another phone with quality workmanship as the 700P, because the Palm Pre is truly NOT worth it........

Anyway, I hope that i am just missing something here. Maybe there's a few other applications i need to make this a "grown up" phone.
I'll give it a little more time searching otherwise i'm running back to my Treo 700P and replace my antenna screw and be happy......

I would've gone with the Palm Pixi personally. I deactivated my Moment and went to the Pixi. Have been much happier. Little things in the OS friom Palm are getting addressed via patches by people in the community. That you won't see on Android. CompanionLink can do syncing with Palm Desktop. Another developer has made Classic Note which brings back Memos, categories and all. He's even working on a standalone desktop program for syncing. I think if you're looking to recreate the PalmOS experience, webOS is the better choice. The homebrew community is more geared towards patching and improving the general OS and overall usability much more t han the Android hackers because they don't have that kind of access. It's pretty sweet

The form factor is just so much more convenient compared to on screen keyboards and landscape sliders, it's not even funny. The 1.4 upgrade was a nice boost as well. Just my two cents. I'm keeping my Moment, but it's strictly a bedside wifi device and probably will remain that way.

Particularly since I have a few celebrity and "important" people contacts, etc.

One suggestion: try using the compact querty keyboard....MUCH more accurate.

Also note everything has password protection for confidential data.
 
sorry. I meant Pocket Mirror. And it should do it over wifi to boot. Unless your home wifi isn't secure.... And since you're on Verizon, that will work with the Pixi.

Well, I have had around 25, if not more, phones in the past 10 years and I have to say it takes much longer to get used to a new phone/ OS

I moved from WinMo to Android 2 weeks ago and I am still working out some stuff I used to do on WinMo and am having problems doing on Android.

I have never used Facebook/ Tweeter (do not even know what it really is for), or any of these apps and I consider myself a Power User, a Geek. I use the phone for email, texts, phonecalls, finances, web browsing etc., etc.

If you think that the fact that it has a startup logo that does not seem professional and that makes the phone bad, well; no comments.

On the ERIS, the difficulty using the keyboard is an understatement, it's darn near impossible to type without typos while walking...... That is 100% normal. The more you know about something the more faults you are going to find.

Search a bit more and complain a bit less.

I do not want to sound rude here, I just hate complaining without taking ANY actions to actually resolve the problem being complained about!

The other thing to consider is this, which I've come to grips with myself: you didn't buy another Treo, so you can't expect it to act like one.

I spent 4 years on a Palm m130 and another two on a Treo 680. I moved to the Droid last December and no, it didn't do what my Treo did. Or it did things differently. Or it did more things. Or it did things better.

It's just a fact of life. If you drove a Dodge van and then moved to a Saturn Ion, it's going to be different. It'll drive differently, stow gear differently, react differently. That's just life. If you wanted a Dodge van, then either keep the one you had or buy another used one.

On the other hand, my Droid will do certain things much better than my Treo ever could have. I guess I'm not complaining about that stuff.

Like it or not -- and I didn't for a long while until I just accepted the fact that this isn't another Treo -- this is the way phones in 2010 are being built, and learn to live within their parameters, accept their successes, and work around their perceived weaknesses.
 
oh, boy, I'm kinda glad to see other "old Palm" users lamenting the lack of a decent PIM on Android. Was starting to think I was an old fuddy duddy. Oh, to be able to search my calendar or duplicate an event again... Crossing my fingers for Pimlical. Glad to see the reviews of Note Everything. I'm a big fan of the app and have the Pro version; Marcus is very responsive to problems/suggestions. I like OI Safe for keeping files of passwords. It uses a master password for access. I'd like a to find a "To Do" app I like (did NOT like Astrid) but I'm using Note Everything for that in the meantime with the reminder function, but I'd rather have a separate one.
