Root Stop OTA update from 4.06.605.3 to 4.08.605.2

Hi all. I recently updated to Gingerbread using the ROM here: [ROM] Official INC OTA 4.06.605.3 - xda-developers

This updated me to 4.06.605.3. Being new to this, I'm not even sure the proper description for what I loaded. Is it a "custom ROM" or a "stock ROM rooted"? If custom, is there a "name" to describe it when posting?

I'm now getting update notifications for the OTA update, which has downloaded and wants me to install 4.08.605.2.

I want to either stop the notifications, or know how to install the update. I assume I can't install the one it downloaded. Do I need to find a rooted one to install instead? I'm happy with the way the phone is running now, but I'll update if there are important items.

For background, I know only the basics, as I didn't do much of this manually. Instead, starting with stock Froyo, I simply used Unrevoked to do everything for me. My only real goal was to root my Incredible in order to run a few apps that require root. Then to get to Gingerbread recently I downloaded the file from the thread above to the SC card and booted to recovery to install from SD. That's it - no customizations, modifications, etc. When I boot with VOL- + PWR it appears that I have s-off, hboot 0.92.0000, radio 2.15.00.07.28 and ClockworkMod Recover v2.5.1.2.

The pop-up notifications are driving me crazy, so any hep is appreciated!

There are 2 threads right below yours that cover both of your options.

You do have a third option of a 4.08.605.2 rom. There is likely one floating around.

If you follow the manual installation method you will temporarily lose root. You'll get it back if you follow all the steps.

I guess my best bet is to update to the latest, rather than just disable the notification.

The 2nd thread you listed above has a post about 4 spots down that links to the 4.08.605.2 build here: [Rom] Official Inc OTA 4.08.605.2 [Updated:16Nov2011] Its Ready! - xda-developers

It looks like I have ClockworkMod Recover v2.5.1.2 as installed when I originally used Unrevoked on Froyo. Is it safe to use that to flash this update? If not, could you point me to a good thread with instructions on how to update? As I said, I didn't do that manually in the first place since it was all handled automatically with Unrevoked.

If I understand, it looks like all I need to do is download it to the SD card, clear all the cache stuff and flash from SD. It appears that will will already have root.

Thanks again.

What type of backup is recommended before installing the new CWM that you posted then the OTA ROM if my only concern is being able to recover from something that might otherwise brick the phone? I've read a bit about programs like Titanium, nandroid and ROM Manager, but not used any of them. I'm not concerned about data and such, but just want protection/recovery from brick.

You don't need to backup before clockwork. It will just flash recovery and is nearly impossible to cause any issues to your phone with. After you flash the new clockwork go into backup & restore. Back your phone up. This is nandroid. If you then want to save that to your computer, sdcard/clockwork/backup and copy the entire folder with the date/timestamp! :)

A nandroid backup is an image of your phone so it will save everything from system files to text messages and pictures. Even icon placement. It will restore your phone to -exactly- how it was when you backed it up.

Perfect. The only thing that threw me for a loop was getting back to HBOOT. I didn't realized that Fastboot would prevent that and I ended up removing the battery and putting it back in to get it to HBOOT, then read about turning off Fastboot. Now updated to ClockworkMod 5, made nandroid backup from within, then downloaded stock rooted 4.8.605.2 from the thread above and everything is running great...and FAST. Thanks again.
