Root Is it a theme I need?

Etrogann

Newbie
Hey guys, I will admit first that I am a complete newb. I JUST installed CM 7 and am now wondering if I can get the swipeable bar from golauncher on my phone without having to install go launcher. Any ideas?
Also can you guys give me any threads or sites of stuff I can now do with my newly rooted phone?
Thanks alot!

The dock bar at the bottom? I don't think you can easily get that without the whole launcher.

There is the Motorola Triumph Root Guide stickied above that is a good place to check out to get started with all that. It includes links to most of the important root related threads (if you find something is left out of it, just let me know).

There are some cool themes in market, my absolute favorite is "Ice Cream Sandwich CM7 Theme". After you download, just search market it will be the first one, Open the app "Theme Chooser" (The icon is android that's blue, red, yellow, and green). Now Slide over till you see "ICS" at bottom right above the apply, click apply. A popup will come up click "Apply Anyway". Reboot your phone completely after about a minute.
Hope this helps :D

Thanks guys, that does help a little. However I have yet to find answers to these specific questions:

1) What exactly does/can a theme do? Is it just visual upgrades like color, fancy widgets and page flip animations or does it add little bits of function like the scrollable dock bar at the bottom?

2) Root allows SuperUser access to my phone. All fine and good, but what apps, settings, ect. can I adjust/use that I couldn't before? What ones should I not touch? I know you guys that develop this stuff think this knowledge is common, but for a new user like myself it is kind of a hunt and peck through google to find out the different levels of functionality I now have on my phone.

3) I have seen themes and launchers, what is the difference? Do they effect the ROM in the same way?

I think that is it for now. Thanks alot for the information!

BTW I did read the sticky at the top before I started, but it was nice to read again now that I understand a little more about the process.

1. A theme will change the way your UI looks (transparent status bar, different colored icons or menus, etc).

2. You probably shouldn't mess with system apps (the ones the OS uses to function) unless you know what you are doing. You can remove the bloatware (the unneeded apps the manufacturer puts on the phone, and doesn't want you to take off). I think there is a list of them for the Triumph somewhere that I can add to the root guide. If in doubt always ask, and make a nandroid before messing with them.

3. A launcher is basically the application that handles your apps and whatnot. It places things on the screens, and sometimes has an app drawer for ones you don't want on the screen. This is what I have seen make it so you can have the scrollable dock bar (i.e. golauncher). Themes and launchers are not the same thing, but they kind of work together.

Sweet, thank you very much, a very simple answer! That explains the differences very well. I will look for the list of safe-to-remove apps for the Triumph, I did get rid of my most hated app, ubersocial, and I think my wife will let me root her phone just for that reason!

If you find the thread let me know where it is so I can save some searching time to add it in the root guide. If you can't find it do the same thing, so I can find it for you (or make a new one!). Just send me a PM.

Quick Google search led me to a few sites. I found this list rather quickly though.
Safe Apps to Remove - SDX-Developers

Figured I would post it for everyone to see as well as send it to agentc13.
Here is the post I was thinking of:

http://androidforums.com/triumph-all-things-root/382062-delete-not-delete-question.html

I would be extra careful about deleting the apps mentioned in the post you mentioned that are not mentioned the one I linked. You will probably be alright, but there is definitely a chance of messing things up.

BE CAREFUL AND HAVE A BACKUP!!!
