For those of you in a 3g only area getting data drops

We only have 3g in our area and and both the wife and I have the Bionic, I get 4g at work so I leave the cmda/lte on. My wife how ever doesn't get 4g by her work. So all I heard was this damn phone that blah blah blah, her saying no connection, POS!

So I did the #*#*4636*#*# (something in that order,) when down to where is says CDMA/GSM Auto and switch that to CDMA Auto a week ago and it has not dropped for her one time, she was experencing 3 to 5 drops a day. It make not work for you, and do this at your own risk. I have not done it on my phone because I don't feel like it.

1.Go to dialer and put *#*#4636#*#*
2. Go to Phone Information
3. Scroll to the bottom of that menu to "Set preferred Network Type"
4. Should see " GSM/CDMA auto (PRL), Push drop down arrow to the right of the box, and select "CDMA auto (PRL).
5. Then exit out of that menu, reboot phone.

AGAIN DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I'm not responsible for your decisions.

You get the same result if you go to ...

Settings | Wireless & network | Mobile networks | Network mode
and select CDMA Only

I have to disagree. I had my wifes phone set to the cdma only. And still dropped data. With the above instructions. She has had no problems.

I don't know what to tell you, except it worked for my wife. She has not complained to me.

I was only paritally correct.

If you set the option the way I suggested and go to the menu the way you suggested you will see that the value has changed.

Yours has ...
CDMA Auto (PRL)
CDMA Only

Mine has ...
CDMA Only

Setting either in yours sets CDMA Only in mine

Setting CDMA Only in mine sets CDMA Only in yours

If you set CDMA Only my way and do a soft reset, it is still set at CDMA Only.

If you set CDMA Auto (PRL) your way and do a soft reset it is still set at CDMA Auto (PRL)

Interesting.

I just did this. I am not rooted. It's working so far. I haven't had a 3G drop yet. I'm out about the town today, so will get a better indication.

Dialing *#*#4636#*#* gets you into the testing menu. From there you can select Phone Information to get to the Phone info screen. Toward the bottom of this screen you'll see a drop down list field - the default value should be "CDMA auto (PRL)". This setting allows the use of 3G/4G for data. A setting of "CDMA only" will prevent use of 3G/4G, limiting the data connection to 1xRTT.

The options available in Menu > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode are:

CDMA/LTE - allows 3G and/or 4G connections
CDMA only - allows 3G connections, but not 4G

I believe a setting of "CDMA only" in the Phone info screen trumps either of the above settings.

Let Settings | Wireless & networks | ... be called A
Let *#*#info#*#* | ... be called B

CDMA/LTE in A corresponds to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) in B
CDMA Only in A corresponds to CDMA Onlly in B
CDMA auto (PRL) in B results in CDMA Only in A

So ... what is the difference between GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and CDMA auto (PRL) in B?

Interesting...

I just checked my phone and it's already on CDMA auto (PRL) (Note i've never gone into phone info before). My phone is usually on CDMA Only in the network settings. I switched the setting to CDMA/LTE and checked the phone info again and it did not change the other setting.

Changed my setting back to CDMA Only and did a reboot and phone info shows CDMA only.
