Thanks!

Sure I would love to help you out! But first just 2 questions:

Do you have the bootstrap app or rom manager?
AND
Since the ICS rom isnt out yet is there another one you want to install in the meantime?

ok thanks! and i have the droid 3 bootstrap app. i did have rom manager but i uninstalled it because i did not know how to use it. but when i had it a downloaded the latest clock work mod i think. i just did the bootstrap app backup last night.

and i am not sure about any roms yet. i think i will wait unit ICS. maybe the latest cyanogen mod

Well first thing you wanna do is re-install rom manager... but before you do anything are you using the tweaked bootstrap app by hashcode or the original one that came before Rom Manager Support?

Also, Cyanogen is still really early and development has slowed drastically as Hascode is now working on ICS... If you awnt a reccomendation I love liberty Rom so we can work with that and I can help you out...

umm, i am not sure on which one of the two it is. all i know is a got it off the market called "Droid 3 Recovery Boostrap" by CLOCKWORKMOD and has a red icon. as you can tell im new:( but i just re installed rom manager

If you reboot recovery through rom manager does it work? If so then you are all set and can flash your first rom! Just make sure you have a backup but u said u do so ur all set! Let me know what rom u want

yes i can! it worked and i am backed up. so i have no idea what ROM i want. the liberty ROM seems old school. reminds me of my OG.

edit: i just looked into a bit and read on it and it sounds really nice! i like what they said about customlauncher2 and the 8 lock screens. (should i delete go launcher and go locker before i do this?)

can i just download toolbox then go to rom manager then select liberty?

edit: i am just following the instruction on that liberty3 page. seems to be pretty easy. thanks for the help

Nope u don't have to worry about removing anything bcuz u wipe user data anyway... u shud do some research into titanium backup becuz ur gonna want that to backup apps and data first

nevermind. i apparently just did it wrong and intallation was aborted and now it looks like i am factory reseting!!!

thank god for bootstrapper. i am now back to normal! thats the last time i try to do something without help

Well like I said b4 you go any further u have to ack up user data with titanium backup or u will lose all apps and app data... u don't have to buy it but its reccomended

Wait what? How are you stuck? What did u try to do?

i went and wiped data. chose the zip. installed it. it installed fine. and then tried to reboot and got stuck. i tried the fast/easy unbrick method and its not working. i am panicking. idk what to do!!

hey i don't mean to hijack the thread but i am in a similar situation. i just rooted and am looking to install a custom rom (monster rom) and have a couple of questions.

i made a backup using the bootstrapper - do i still need to do a backup with titanium backup as well? what is the difference between the two?

second, could you explain about what 'deodexed' means? i've read that all it means is that you can install different themes - but i am a little confused how it works. do i need to install the 'deodexed droid3 rom' from the list of stable roms first before i install the monster rom?

thanks for any help you can provide. i have been trying to do as much research as possible to make sure i do this the best way.

thanks!

just noticed that on the monster rom xda page it says that monster rom is 'deoxed 5.6.890 system' so i'm assuming that means that it is deodexed. so that answers that questions. but i still am a little confused at what deodexed means exactly

If u look in the app folder of the stock system u will see that each app has a .apk and a .odex,
Deodexing means repackaging the odex with the apk... it allows for easier modification of the system so therefore themes can install

Well, with your first question. Making a backup through recovery is BETTER than Titanium because it backs up your phone exactly how it is. With everything preserved as it exactly was when you booted into recovery.

As for odex vs. deodex...
This phone came odexed, meaning most of the apps in your /system/app folder will say something like BlurCamera.apk and below it will be BlurCamera.odex, which is an additional file needed for it to work but most ROMs have incorporated this .odex file into the .apk making the system "deodexed". *I believe that deodexed systems are a hair larger, but easier to manipulate. Don't quote me on that last part though.*
