Help Is SMS the same as a text?

Is SMS and text messaging one in the same? The reason I ask is when I send myself a text or others send me text I get it right away, no problem. But two times now I have had services say they would send a verification SMS and I never got them. Why this is happening?

Are you using a Google Voice number for the texts? I've found that automated texts like that from companies don't come in sometimes via the GV number but they do via the Virgin number.

Codes that you can text to that are not full phone numbers usually about 4 numbers
