How is voicemail handled with android/ICS (iphone user)

I am currently an iphone user and have been eagerly anticipating the release of the nexus so I can jump ship but I am curious as to how the Nexus will handle voicemail. Will the experience be similar to the iphones visual voicemail? Is this native functionality within android?

Also verizon has several upgrades to your monthly plan for visual voicemail and after speaking with a verizon rep, their app is proprietary???

Whats the deal? and can I expect to have a similar voicemail experience with the Nexus that I have with the Iphone? I really hate to call in to voicemail numbers...

I'm not sure about the Nexus but on my droid incredible I just dial *86 or you get a notification and you just click it and it dials your voice mail.

Coming from an iPhone myself I really like Google Voice for voicemail and it's free to boot!
