Help Charging via PC?

I have been charging my nexus via the usb cable connected to my PC monitor all day at work. This is how i charged my incredible and OG droid, if i keep the screen on while streaming slacker radio it is discharging. Assuming it can't keep up charging while attached to the PC, looks like Ill have to buy a plug for the wall or a dock so i can charge at work, just thought I would share.

i noticed something similar yesterday, when i had the phone plugged into the pc and was doing something on it (either 4g download or moving files from pc to phone) it wouldn't go up in charge (didn't go down either). when i wasn't doing anything on the phone it charged so slowly, like maybe 5% an hour. plug it into the wall and it charged like 20% in an hour. never had that problem with my incredible. i thought maybe it was my work pc since it has some usb issues to begin with.

nah just can't charge fast enough from the PC, I thought this might happen....mine charges really slowly even streaming slacker on 3G if the screen is off but if the screen is on as well it discharges slowly.

you can actually turn the phone off and charge it while its off, that worked alright i charged it up to 70% in like 3 hours (obviously not that fast and it was off but it worked)

Edit: Charging off the PC

if you have USB 3.0 it will charge faster. just a side note :)

Really? I didn't know that actually, that's a driver thing right? Windows 7 has usb 3.0? Or is it an actual hardware/software thing as well?

Edit: I am actually charging off my monitor not even my tower that might actually help

Windows 7 doesn't have native driver, but you can always buy PCI-E slot USB 3.0 (Windows 7 does good job fetching drivers), I can't see how using that would make charge any faster, not to mention that Galaxy Nexus uses USB 2.0.

Charging via PC? Hmm... I did that with DINC every now and that (unintentionally) when I forget to disconnect cable after file transfer... seems to charge at 3-5%/hr. If discharge rate is faster on Galaxy Nexus, then maybe it won't charge at all via PC?

USB 1.0 & 2.0 charge at .5A The charger in the GN box has an output rated at 1.0 A.

The USB 3.0 spec allows for output currents up to 900mA. So it's not guarantee (still could be 500mA and be in spec), bit it's a good bet a USB 3.0 port will goose your phone with a bit more oomph.

Thanks foe the replies guys I read up on USB 3.0 but I'm charging at work its been better the past few days since I wasn't charging from a completely dead state but it still is pretty slow
