But tonight i threw caution to the wind and followed the htc developers guide and unlocked my bootlock! :-D without destroying my phone :-D my question is: what can i safely do now? Please try and consider the fact that i an a noob, so be as specific as you can. Thanks in advance :-)

Well you took a hell of a risk without know any of the benefits...

The main thing you can do is look up different roms and what they offer, also do a bit of Googling into the matter, it'll shed some more light on the matter than I can. Also allows you to install custom irecovers, .which make life easier.

Next big thing is getting root on your phone, although almost all roms will come with root already, it allows you greater control of applications, underclocking of the CPU, but again do a search.

Once you've looked into those you'll have a clearer picture.

What expectations of your phone do you have now that it's unlocked? If you want 'full potential', then look at custom ROMS and/or applications that exploit rooted phones.

Doing things 'safely' is open to debate. If you don't know what you're doing, then there's always a chance you can brick your phone or get yourself in a cul-de-sac if you're not able to follow instructions, do some independent research or aren't willing to experiment.

Read the stickies on this sub-forum and explore other more technical forums. There are various ways to do the same thing, which can be a good thing, but could also represent a problem if you get confused as to what you've done and how to go about undoing it.

Well all I've done so far is unlock the bootlock, I've not tried flashing any roms yet, and in not sure if I've got the minerals to try it if I'm honest! There's also an issue with my hboot number, I've read on other threads that its not possible to flash my phone yet. If i do take the plunge all I'm looking to do is maybe make it a bit faster, and maybe universal some of the stock apps i don't want but can't get rid of. Until i see what else i can do anyway!

If you are Hboot v2 (have to be to use HTCDev) and have unlocked your bootloader then you can flash a recovery image and roms, not simlock and radios.

I do have hboot v2 and i did use the guide at htcdev. So can i now flash a room without rooting my phone?

Yeah, that's the whole point of unlocking the bootloader.

First flash a recovery image then flash a rom of your choice.

well thats great news, thanks, i thought i would also have to root my phone :) just installed titanium backup and root manager, they gave me error messages saying that they would not work as my phone is not rooted, will flashing a custom rom root my phone and make them work?

it's cr@p being a noob......:(

Read read read and read some more,

HTCdev unlocks the bootloader, nothing more, it merely unlocks doors.

To get root access you will need to root your phone still.

Look at this thread.
In Section 1;
Ignore step 1 It is to S-off 0.98.0000/2 hboots (you dont need to do this cause you have unlocked the bootloader)
Follow step 2 and 3 to install CWM and get root on your phone.

For step two you can either use the described method or Android Flasher or Updater file (PG88IMG.zip).

All the info you need is in that thread.

Didn't work :( i ignored step one like you said, followed all the instructions in step 2 all the way to run command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" in cmd then I got an error message saying "error: cannot load 'recovery.img'"

One possible avenue to explore: when I plugged my phone in to start fastboot my laptop tells me "windows needs to install driver software for your Android 1.0" even though I've had it connected loads of times before, but not in HBoot, just for charging and dick drive. My laptop can't locate the drivers, and my phone didn't come with a disk I can insert so where do I find these elusive drivers?

Thanks in advance

I think you didn't follow the guide.

But follow these steps from Step 1 (my bad)
-Ensure HTC sync is UNINSTALLED on the PC!!!!!!!
-Turn off fastboot menu/settings/power/fastboot (on the phone)
-Turn on USB debugging menu/Settings/Applications/Development/USB debugging (on the phone)

Did you do the test/do the following;

-Install HTCDriver (Fastboot drivers) (should already be installed from revolutionary step) but here's the link again

and have you set up adb/fastboot?

*To test whether you have set up all the files correctly and your phone is connected correctly you can do the following;
*Plug your phone in (when plugging in select CHARGE ONLY (i.e. leave on the home screen)
*In cmd type "adb" and press enter, it should show a list of commands, then type "fastboot"and press enter, it should also show a list of commands)
*If both these commands work you have extracted the files to the right place and have setup cmd right.
*then type "adb devices"
*Should show connected phone serial if not then try get the latest HTCdrivers (then uninstall HTC sync)

and (this is what I assume is wrong)
-Download clockworkmod (here) for your phone and place .img in C:\android-tools folder (i.e. where the files adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, AdbWinUsbApi.dll and fastboot.exe are)
*To make life easier rename the file to recovery.img

Follow it step by step.

Hi, I started again from the beginning and downloaded the revolutionary app and ran it with my phone plugged in as instructed, only for it to tell me
"found your device: HTC desire S (saga-2.00.0002, Android: 2.3.5, ROM version: 2.10.161.3)"

"your device: saga, with HBOOT 2.00.0002 is not supported at this time"

mystery solved?

You have already unlocked your phone, so for your use you don't/cant use rev.

But follow ONLY these steps from Step 1 (my bad)

Just did all that, still telling me in cmd error: cannot load recovery.img

I've uninstalled HTC sync
Set fastboot off
Turned on USB debugging
Downloaded and installed HTC fastboot drivers
Done the tests in cmd to make sure all the files have been set up correctly and my phone is connected correctly
Downloaded the clockwork mod and placed the image file in C:\android-tools and renamed the image recovery.img
Done the test in cmd to make sure I have put my phone in to fastboot

cmd then looks like this:

C:\android-tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
error: cannot load recovery.img

windows is still telling me is needs to install driver software for my android 1.0, are you sure that's not got something to do with it?

Also in hboot my phone says it is S-ON, despite the fact I've unlocked the bootlocker, is that normal?

many thanks

Have you renamed the file to recovery.img, cause the error you are getting is because it cant find the file recovery.img, if you still having a problem with that just use the downloaded recovery file name. (fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img)

If that still doesn't work try android flasher (put phone into fastboot, on PC select recovery img and say flash)

Not sure about the driver, try Google USB Driver | Android Developers in addition to the htc drivers, clutching at straws with that one, but since your "fastboot devices" returns your serial it must be working.

Yes, it should still say s-on, cause the phone is still s-on but you have access to flashing roms and recovery (because of the unlock), not radios and sim locks.

well that was interesting....
turns out I made a boo-boo (no great shock there)

when i put the recovery.img into the android-tools folder I did it by copying and pasting it, so just now I deleted it and dragged and dropped it into the folder instead. I then ran cmd fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and got the following message:

sending 'recovery' (4336 KB)... OKAY [ 0.771s]...
writing 'recovery' ...INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.501s

any idea what's gone wrong this time?

Yeah, thats the end of my mental power. I really dont know. Only thing I can suggest is trying other methods to flash (andriod flasher, updater zip, or a dd command)

Tried android flasher, ran in to the same problem with the remote signature verify fail. I'll just give up and chalk it up to experience. Thanks for your help, if i ever do figure it out I'll make a point of helping other noobs with the same problem

Giving it some thought, maybe you can try root your phone, then install ROMmanager then install cwm that way. isn't ideal but worth a try.

I've been doing some research, turns out it's not yet possible to root with HBoot 2x yet. I'm hoping the good people at unrevoked are working on it but I don't know how to contact them.

Give superoneclick a chance, it may work since you used unlocked your bootloader. use the zegpush method.

regardless the past discussed methods should have worked for you.
